90th Anniversary Celebration
The Potomac Playmakers were honored on October 1, 2016 as the City of Hagerstown and others celebrated The Potomac Playmakers' 90th Anniversary!
According to the Playmakers, "Thanks to Mayor Gysberts, Councilman Brubaker, representatives on behalf of Congressman Delaney, the Chamber of Commerce, The Washington County Arts Council, Main Street Hagerstown, SCORE, City of Hagerstown Community & Economic Development, City of Hagerstown Event Planning, and others for sharing in our celebration! "Gallery 50", the Arts Alliance's flagship gallery, has maintained a following featuring: Wind Down Fridays with music and Uncorked Inspiration Paint nights. Artists demo every Thursday with Marjorie Tressler and music every weekend at Gallery 50. Also, there are writers' and song writers' forums once a month. With over 80 artists and artisans represented in Gallery 50, it is joined by 42 West Arts, a co-op gallery with 17 artists; The Ceramic Center, a co-op of potters; and Through the Lens and Beyond plus Gallery 20. Ready to Serve
is a personal story of the unknown Johns Hopkins nurses who donned Army uniforms and served with Hopkins Base Hospital 18 where they cared for hundreds of wounded soldiers. This true story is drawn from their letters. Schoettler says, "These gutsy women who stepped up to serve their country at war capture your heart."

Engine Room Art Space is calling for vendor applicants for their 2nd Annual Pocket Market held the weekends of the Pop Up Shops November 18, 19 and 26th. It is free to apply. The deadline is November 9th. The Pocket Market intends to sell small affordable artworks, crafts, or other gift items from $1 - $100. Ten 6' x 3' tables are available. In Search of Arts Instructors
In search of dance and/or drama instructors, who, ideally, sing and practice progressive ways of cultivating creativity in children--such as, non-violent communication, games to foster healthy self-expression, independence and empowerment, etc. They would be helping my MATI team to create an afterschool arts program that engages the students and ignites their enthusiasm and creativity. Using themes and issues of the students' lives (like bullying, fitting in, friendships, etc.) the team of teachers will guide them in putting together drama scenes, choreographing dances, writing, composing, and performing original songs. Projects may include performances in school and in the community, recording CDs, DVDs, and putting together a full musical theatre production. The overall vision is to empower the children and, with these creative skills, to nourish their families and the Bester community. Bester Community of Hope is spearheading the afterschool program. It will involve a commitment of two afternoons a week at Bester Elementary, plus planning time. Salary would range from $40 - $50 per class hour, plus more, depending on the how extensive the program grows. It is to start in the second semester, Jan. 2017. The desire to enrich the lives of the thousands of visitors, both within our community and beyond, has been the purpose of the Museum since its incorporation in 1929.

HENCH SMITH: Drone Strike Jesus
Kepler Gallery, Hagerstown Community College
October 15 - November 19th, 2016
Drone Strike Jesus is a solo exhibit by Artist Hench Smith, sculptor and mixed media artist presenting a body of work that questions and confronts America's perception of history and its lack of political memory.

In a new exhibit at the Miller House Museum, compare modern and historical presidential scandals, see why colonial voting was more like a college frat party, and learn more about Washington County's political history. Displays include photographs, letters, artifacts and political memorabilia. The exhibit runs until December 31st.
The new exhibit opens officially on September 10th. Take a self-guided tour of the museum, explore the new exhibit, and participate in political-themed games, crafts and activities! Free for WCHS members, $8 for adults and $5 for children under 16 and seniors over 60. Family discounts available.

Coming to the Kepler Black Box - a wonderful comedy farce about theater students! "Stardust" by Walter Kerr - opened at Catholic University in 1946, directed by theater legend Father Gilbert Hartke. This show and HCC both celebrating 70 years together!

HCC releases 2016 edition
of the
Hedge Apple
Hagerstown Community College will hold a reception for the most recent publication of its literary arts magazine, the Hedge Apple, on Tuesday, Nov. 8, from 6 to 8 p.m., in the Antietam Room in the Student Center.
All contributors to the 2016 Hedge Apple are encouraged to come celebrate and read their original work. The English Club is partnering with the Theater Club to include an open mic session for all interested HCC students. Work written by others will be allowed as long as the speaker has permission to perform the piece. Speakers are limited to three minutes per piece. Prizes will be awarded.
This event is free and is open to the public. Local writers and artists are encouraged to attend. Advance registration is not required. Copies of the Hedge Apple magazine are complimentary for all attendees.
The Hedge Apple was founded in 1999 by Askold Skalsky, a former professor of English and foreign languages at HCC, now retired. The magazine is published once a year by the students and faculty of Hagerstown Community College and features poetry, short fiction, and artwork by HCC students, faculty, staff, and alumni.
Submissions for the next edition of the Hedge Apple will be accepted until January 31, 2017. For more information, visit www.hedgeapplemagazine.com.

Valley Art Association Membership meeting will be held
Wednesday, November 16 at 7pm
with speaker Laura Shindle.
Laura Lewis Shindle, originally from Hagerstown, studied art at the Washington County Museum of Fine Art, under the instruction of Clyde Roberts and Bruce Etchison for ten years. Ms. Shindle continued her education at Ringling School of Art in Sarasota, Florida. Over the years, she continued her education at Hagerstown Community College as well as workshops with many renowned artists, such as Al Brule', formerly an artist from Walt Disney Studio. Laura's work hangs in galleries, doctor's offices, banks, restaurants and private collections here and abroad. Laura has always been an art realist, but her recent works include abstract art and printing, an art of making a collage and printing it with a printing press.

The Hagerstown Garden Club will hold its first Annual Luncheon and Holiday Mart on Thursday, November 17, 2016 at Fountain Head Country Club, 13316 Fountain Head Road, Hagerstown, MD 21742. The event begins at 11:00 with a cash bar and a shopping experience featuring vendors R. Bruce Carson Jewelers, Gordon's Grocery, Lovell's Nursery, Bows by Jane and June, Thistle Farms, Christmas Cookies by the Dozen, Oil and Vinegar Culinary Gifts, and Simple Stampin. At 12:15 a three course luncheon will be served followed by a speaker, Carol Chernega, author of The Secret Gardens of England. Ms. Chernega worked in Jane Austin's garden in Chawton, England gaining insight into the mind of the English gardener. Marjorie Tressler is facilitating a weekly painting session in oil, acrylic, watercolor or mixed media for intermediate and advanced painters each Tuesday. These sessions are free and open to all members of the VAA. The artists share ideas, experiences, knowledge and use of materials. There are some critiques, but most of all, inspiration. The artists supply their own materials, still life set-ups and resource photographs, etc. The only requirement is that the artist needs to be self-motivated and able to work independently. Marjorie Tressler is conducting a painting class for both oil and acrylic painters the first and third Wednesday nights each month from 6:30 pm - 9:00 pm. Location: Mansion House Art Center. Tuition is 65.00 for 6 classes. Classes are continuous and will be for all painting levels. Each student gets individual attention and is encouraged to work on any subject they are interested in and wish to paint. The class is very unique where the students are taught in a very friendly and relaxed atmosphere with fun conversations, where everyone is enjoying the experience of creating a beautiful painting.
