Akiva Academy Used Book Fair!
Everyone is coming together to celebrate literacy at Akiva. We will be holding a used book fair on  Wednesday, November 16th. We invite everyone to join us and browse around. Your support of this event will go toward helping us obtain new books and resources for our library and classrooms.
Don't forget to mark the Used Book Fair date on your calendar! We look forward to seeing you during our Book Fair and thank you, in advance, for supporting this great literary fundraiser.

Donating Used Books
If you or your children decide that you want to donate your gently used books and magazines, please drop them off at the School office. Mr. Hadden will store the books and magazines until the big event. Please keep this in mind as you are fall cleaning. The grade three students will help sort the materials along with some parent volunteers. Used Book Fair volunteers are needed to help sort, price, and sell books. If you are interested, please contact the Mr. Hadden.
Each child is invited to visit the book fair with their class during the day of Wednesday, November 16th.

Thank You!
Thank you to Mr. Jack Adler for starting a fund at Akiva to purchase a Tanach for every Akiva Graduate.

Thank you so much to Morah Laura and Morah Rivky who are filling in for Morah Miller. Morah Laura will be in Morah Miller's Pre-School classes the whole morning. Morah Rivky comes to lead Tefillah and Parsha in Pre-School and is teaching Grade 1 in the afternoon.

Thank you so much to Judy Shapiro and Calgary Jewish Federation for enabling our visitor Yehonatan Boneh to come to Calgary to visit our school.

Thank you so much to Yehonatan for the amazing talks he has given to our students about the importance of praying for rain in Israel, about the land of Israel, and about the students of Uziel school in Kiryat Shmona.

Thank you to all those who have hosted him and provided meals and rides to Yehonatan.
Chanukah Play
All students from Nursery through Grade 9 will be participating in the Chanukah Play which will be on Thursday December 15th at 6 PM. Please let the office know if your child(ren) will be away during that time.
Science Fair
Grade 5-9 students will be preparing for the school science fair in February and are eligible to enter the City Science Fair in April if they follow the proper procedures. The City Youth Science Fair will take place this year April 19-21 during Pesach Break.

In order to enter the City Science fair, students need to follow the requirements which include using a large trifold.

Mr. Virine who is our Parent Volunteer Coordinator has graciously donated the majority of the cost of the large size trifolds.

Students are required to pay $5 each for the trifolds which can now be purchased in the school office. Please send in $5 to purchase a large size trifold.
Carpool Volunteer
We are looking for a volunteer to drive Chaya home at 3:30 pm OR Yossi at 4:20 pm on Thursdays.  If you are able to drive please contact Adina at [email protected].

Sponsorship Opportunities at Akiva
We are looking for plant donations to place above the lockers to make our space more appealing. Please speak to Morah Orly and Mrs. Mashiah about the type and size of plant you would like to donate.

We are looking for a sponsor to install a filtered water bottle filling station for the students to use to fill their water bottles. The cost is approx. $1500. Partial sponsorships will be appreciated as well.

Would you like to sponsor a school event in honour of a relative or friend?
There are many ways to sponsor activities or events at Akiva.

Here are some ways:
A day of Hot Lunch $150
Holiday Assembly $180
Field Trip for a class $250
Pre-School Snack $50
Library Books $36

Online Curriculum Survey
Dear Colleagues,

Last week, Education Minister David Eggen and Premier Rachel Notley announced the launch of our online curriculum survey as part of our broad engagement to hear feedback from Albertans in every corner of the province. The survey can be accessed at  curriculumsurvey.alberta.ca , and will be available for everyone in the province  until November 18, 2016 .

I encourage you to help spread this survey to the teachers, parents, students, and community members within and around your school authority. We will use the robust and diverse viewpoints of Albertans to help inform our work to ensure students are "Future Ready." More information on curriculum development can be found on the  Alberta Education website .

Sincerely,

Curtis Clarke, PhD.
