Market News

The big national story this week may have been the election but jobs were the big economic story last week. On Friday the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that 161,000 new jobs were created in October and updated the numbers for September and August to reflect higher gains than earlier reported. The employment growth in the third quarter - which mirrored a jump in GDP growth - brought the average monthly job gains to 181,000 for the year. That level of job creation outpaces the forecast for 2016 by about 10%.

Project News

The biggest project news in Western PA is in the heavy/highway sector. Yesterday, Independence Excavation was the low bidder on the $90.5 million Southern Beltway Sec. 55A1 in western Washington County. Last week Lane Construction was successful on the $117.8 million I-70 project east of Washington PA; Lindy Paving won the $16.2 million I-79 section in Butler County and Independence landed a $9.9 million job on Route 422 in Armstrong county. Another larger section of the Southern Beltway, Sec. 55B, bids on Dec. 14.

On the building side, the successful contractors are rumored to have been chosen for the  Uptown District Energy Plant and the  Administration buildings at the cracker. Turner Construction is underway on Allegheny Valley Hospital's $3.5 million acute rehab/orthopedics project. A. Martini & Co. was successful on the fit-out of 17,000 sq. ft. for Frost Brown Todd in the Union Trust Building. Landau was chosen for the $8 million AHN outpatient services clinic, going into the former Old Navy store in Waterworks Mall.  Yarborough was low on the $7.9 million Eagle Stadium renovation at South Park School District.
