A WORD FROM OUR COMMISSIONER
What are the 3 reason anyone shows up to the field? #1, THE PLAYERS, #2, THE PLAYERS and #3, you guessed right, THE PLAYERS!!!! We are all at the field to provide a safe, fun and fair place for the players to play. "WE" is defined as anyone who is at a field that is not a PLAYER. WE need to let the players play. They have trained to play the game. The game is the test of what they learned in training. Allow them to show what they learned
I would like to thank all the hard work the Board and many volunteers put in to get 1800+ players playing soccer for another year. You will see many of them at every game (Coaches, Referees and Team Parents) and walking around the fields. Please remember to thank someone that is volunteering when you see them. And don't forget to volunteer yourself - we can always use your help in any way, big or small. Without our volunteers, there would be no Quartz Hill AYSO or any AYSO.
It is another great start to the season. All the smiles, cheers, and memories made are a pleasure to watch and be a part of, even with the heat. If you want to see the pure joy of playing soccer, stop by and watch the U05 players on Saturday at the west side of Lane Park field 1 from 8:00 - 11:00am, or the VIP team at 9:00am on Lane Park 2 and 10:20am on LJW3. If you want to watch some very competitive soccer watch the Saturday or Sunday games on UJW. The players love to hear the cheers!!!
Please remember that every game needs a referee crew (U10 and above). No Referee, No Game, No Exceptions!! Class is right around the corner: Sunday, September 25th. Contact Tim Haddad for more information or sign up on easyo.org.
Players play!!!
Coaches coach!!!
Parents cheer!!!
Thanks

Coach Corner
Hello Coaches, All-Star nomination forms for U10/U12/U14 will be going out in a few weeks. Coaches in each division will be part of the selection process, so you need to make sure you are observing players in your division. All-Star coach applications will be sent out via email this week. If you are interested in coaching an All-Star team this season, please return the application to the Coach Administrator folder in the board member box (located adjacent to the snack bar at Joe Walker/Lane Park or in the board member folder at the other field locations). You must have coached in the division you are applying for. Coach selections will be made prior to the All-Star meetings in early November. Tournament coach applications are due by Saturday Sept. 24th. The application can be found on the region web site www.qhayso.org. Completed applications should be returned to Tournament Director's Folder (adjacent to the snack bar at Joe Walker/Lane Park or in the board member folder at the other field locations). Tournament coach selection will be over the next couple weeks with coaches notified shortly thereafter. Tournament try-outs will begin in October. U6/U8 Soccer Drill of the Week Jam-Packed Soccer Dribbling Drill Setup
To begin this drill, create a circle with disc cones that is approximately 20 yards in circumference. Make sure each player has a ball, and instruct them to line up around the outside of the circle.
Instructions
Have the players begin the soccer drill by dribbling around the outside of the circle all in the same direction. The coach should inform the players to listen for certain queues and perform those actions once the coach shouts the command. These commands are:
- JOG - Players should dribble at a comfortable speed
- FULL SPEED - players should dribble at their top speed
- CUT - players should cut the ball in the other direction and travel in the other direction around the circle
- CROSS - all players should cut across the grid avoiding contact with other players or other player's balls
Variations
Coaching Points
- Since all 4 players should be entering the center area at the same time make sure players are looking ahead of them with their head up.
- Remind players to keep the ball close when entering the traffic area.
- Have players start playing with their arms up and out for balance and shielding
- Instruct players to dribble with both feet and all parts of the foot.
- This is a fun soccer drill, so make sure to HAVE FUN!
U10/U12 Soccer Drill of the Week 4v4 Playing Wide Out of the Back This drill is designed to get players to play balls wide when playing from the back (defensive third of the field). Players will recognize that they will find more time and space in the outsides of the fields and be relieving the center of the field from dangerous play. Setup Create a grid approximately 40X25 yards. Create a small goal on the endline with two cones. Create two 7 yard channels along the outsides of the field on the center line. Split the players into 2 teams of 4. Instructions Each team has a goal to defend. Scoring is achieved when the ball is won in the back half of the field and played wide through a channel. Players are not allowed to go forward unless it is passed or dribbled through the channel first. Variations
- Limit player's number of touches
- Add a 2nd ball
- Ball must be PASSED through the channel
Coaching Points
- Once the ball is won, players must quickly open up for their teammates which will allow for quick switch (changing the point of the attack).
- Players should be thinking a step ahead of the play.
- Once the ball is won defensively, keep possession and get out of the back by going wide.

Referee Corner
BECOME A REFEREE: It is the best seat in the house!
New Referee Training this Sunday, September 25th!!
After our second week of the season, our referee coverage is still down compared to recent seasons. We were able to bring out some more help this past weekend, but we are still in need of new referees. Fewer referees covering the games means fewer referee points are being earned by teams. After two weeks, we still have 30 of our 87 teams that have zero referee points!! Last year at this time, only 13 teams had zero referee points. There is still time to get referee points, but you are running out of time to get trained as a referee. This is our last scheduled referee training for the season! Don't miss it!
Regional Referee Training: Sunday, September 25th, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Lancaster National Soccer Center
Intermediate and Advanced Training
An Intermediate Referee class is being offered on October 2nd and 9th in Phelan. This is a two day course that is being offered on two Sundays. You must attend both days to complete the course. Sign up at
www.eayso.org Roster# 201601565.
Area staff is planning an Advanced Referee Course tentatively scheduled for December 3rd and 4th. If you are interested in taking the course, please email me at
jschoorl638@gmail.com and I will add you to the interest list.
Referee FAQ's
Q) Why should I referee?
A) AYSO is an all-volunteer organization and there are NO games at U10 or higher without referees. Also, it is a fun way to be involved and the best "seat in the house" is in the middle of the field.
In addition, if you are considering having your child play year-round tournament soccer, the kids with referee parents often gain an edge in team selection.
Q) I heard that teams can get referee points that affect the standings, and to make the playoffs a team must get referee points, is this true?
A) Yes, in U10, U12 and U14 the teams play 10 games and referees can get as many as 10 points to help their team of choice. A team also has to get at least 7 referee points just to be eligible for the playoffs.
Q) How many points do I get for refereeing a game?
A) An Assistant Referee at U10 thru U14 or a Referee on a U8 game gets 0.5 points per game. A "center" Referee on a U10 thru U19 game gets 1 point per game. An Assistant Referee on a U16 or U19 game gets 1 point per game.
Q) I do not know the rules of soccer - does it matter?
A) No. The Regional Referee Class will teach you all you need to know about the
Laws of the Game to function as a referee or assistant referee.
Q) Do I have to buy anything?
A) We provide you with a uniform and all the basics needed to referee.
Q) My weekend schedule is crazy busy - who assigns games to me?
A) You do! After taking the Regional Referee Class, we will send you an invitation to join "Arbiter Sports". This is a web-based program that will list all the games that you will be qualified to referee. You pick and choose which games fit your schedule.
We do not assign you to any games.
Q) I am an adult volunteer, what level games will I be set to referee?
A) After taking the Regional Referee Class, we will initially set your level so that new Adult volunteers can be an Assistant Referee or Referee on U10 games and a Referee on U8 games.
Q) I am a youth volunteer, what level games will I be set to referee?
A) After taking the Regional Referee Class, we will initially set your level so that new youth volunteers can be an Assistant Referee on U10 games and a Referee on U8 games.
Q) Are there mentor referees available to help new referees learn the ropes?
A) Yes. We are always short of referees, but where possible there are a few of us who will come out and help you on your first games - just ask!
Q) When will I be able to referee higher-level games?
A) Talk to us during the season, and we can adjust the level for any referee who shows the inclination to move up.
If you have any questions about refereeing, please do not hesitate to contact any of the referee staff.
Top Youth U8 Referee Contest
We have a small group of dedicated Youth Referees out covering U8 games this year. We hope to add more in the coming weeks. Refereeing U8 games is a great experience and the kids and coaches really appreciate our volunteers coming out to referee their game. This year we will again be rewarding our top boy and girl youth referees who do the most U8 games during the season. Here are the standings after two weeks.
Referee Contest
Our annual friendly competition amongst our referees to see who can do the most games is in full swing this year. Many of the usual suspects are at the top of the leader board, but there is still a long ways to go in the season, which means plenty of time for the rest of the pack to catch up. Here are the top 25

Region 638 Zero Tolerance Policy
In the past years, Region 638 has witnessed incidents where coaches &/or spectators questioned the calls of referees requiring referees to stop matches to deal with the situation. There have also unfortunately been incidents once a game has ended when coaches &/or spectators confront referees or other volunteers over decisions made during the game. These incidents prompt me to remind everyone that Region 638 has a long standing, zero tolerance policy prohibiting such behavior.
Our zero tolerance policy applies to all Referees and AYSO volunteers and will be enforced as follows:
- If a coach or spectator questions the call of a referee, the referee may stop the match, retrieve the game ball, and invite the coach onto the field for a conversation.
- During this conversation the coach may be told 3 things:
- The purpose of the conversation is not to debate a call but to inform the coach that the behavior of the coach/spectator is unacceptable.
- The coach has 2 choices. He/she can go back to their coaching area and coach per AYSO philosophies or the coach/spectator can leave the playing facility.
- The coach/spectator will be sent off if the referee has to speak to them again during the match.
- If the referee is a youth referee, the youth referee may stop the match, retrieve the game ball, and find a board member to deal with the situation as described above.
- Any coach/spectator who is heard verbally abusing a referee will automatically be sent off by the referee (if an adult) or a board member (in the case of a youth referee). Verbal abuse includes foul and abusive language and comments with racial or sexual overtones.
- If the unacceptable behavior of the coach/spectator occurs after the game has ended it will still be reported by the referee and will be considered as a send off.
- Referees will report any occurrences where a coach/spectator is sent off and there will be an investigation to determine the subsequent penalty. The penalties are at the discretion of the Region and may include suspension from future games.
- The Region also reserves the right to investigate instances when abuse of a referee or volunteer is not reported by the referee or volunteer but is subsequently brought to our attention. The penalties are at the discretion of the Region and may include suspension from future games.

SAFETY TIP OF THE WEEK
The Antelope Valley is often quite windy and sometimes we get extremely strong gusts. Please remember to stake down all your easy-ups and umbrellas for the safety of all.
Thank you, Scott Jones
Safety Director, QH AYSO

SAFETY REMINDER
U10 COACHES AND SPECTATORS - FIELDS 2 and 3
We need your helping keeping things SAFE for our
PLAYERS and ASSISTANT REFEREES.
On Lower Joe Walker, we have re-positioned Fields 2 and 3 this season to create space enough for easy-ups between the two fields but still need the cooperation of all spectators to please always sit to the left of their center-line. Following this simple request will allow the spectators on both fields to be the required 3 yards from the touchline, the assistant referee will not be in danger of tripping over a spectator AND your spectators will not have the assistant referee constantly running right in front of them.

Marie Kerr Park Parking
This season there are several events being held at Marie Kerr Park that may affect parking. Please take note of the dates below and allow additional time to find parking. On some occasions the parking lot adjacent to Marie Kerr East may be closed.
October 8th: Kaleidoscope Festival, 10am-6pm
|
NO SMOKING ALLOWED
QH AYSO is a Kids Zone which, among other things, means we have a strict no smoking policy, including e-cigarettes. Please refrain from smoking at any field or area that is utilized by QH AYSO - this includes the perimeter of the parking lots where children may be walking by. If a child can see you, you are in a location where you are not allowed to smoke.
Thank you for your cooperation!
|
TRASH, TRASH, TRASH!
Each week as the games come to an end, our fields and the surrounding areas are littered with TRASH! We need to show respect for ourselves and our community and not leave our trash behind! Before you leave to go home and enjoy the rest of your weekend, please make sure that our fields, the parking lot, and the roads where we park are clean! If you are the last game of the day please make sure to pick up any trash still remaining and also return any AYSO trash cans to the snack bar area or pick up location for your field.
And, PLEASE take large items, such as broken chairs, home with you!!!
Together we can keep our fields and our community clean!
|
NO CLEATS
on the
JOE WALKER OR GREGG ANDERSON TRACKS!!!
To all Parents, Coaches, and Players:
Please do not run on these tracks while wearing cleats! This can cause severe and costly damage to the track which QH AYSO will be responsible for repairing.
Thanks for your cooperation!
|
NO PETS ALLOWED!!!
As in previous years, Quartz Hill AYSO will continue this season to observe the No Pets Allowed policy. Pets are not allowed at any practices or games at any field anytime, with the exception of service animals. This rule is for the safety of our children, families, and pets. In addition, animals on school property puts our permit with the school district at risk. If we lose the use of Joe Walker, Gregg Anderson, and Esperanza, our program would be greatly compromised. Please make sure to let anyone know who is coming to support your player of our policy. Anyone with a pet will be asked to leave the field and the game will be stopped until they have complied.
If you have any questions regarding this policy, please contact our Safety Director, Josh Duncan at 661-436-0180.
Thank you for your cooperation.
