Mini Forum
Throughout the school year, the preschool and kindergarten children will take turns performing on stage. Most recently, the PK1 and Kindergarten students performed dances, songs and a percussion piece for their parents and friends. Learning to perform in front of an audience at an early age instills confidence in the children and of course is a delightful and lovely moment enjoyed by everyone.

Second Grade Forum
The second graders made a presentation about the seven continents on Earth. The students learned about some of the special features of each continent and the differences in their size and also  worked together to create maps of each continent.

Aerial Revolution Field Trip: 8th grade
On October 19, 2016, the 8th graders enjoyed learning the ropes of Circus Aerial Performances, at the Aerial Revolution center. It was athletic, fun and challenging!

Science Fair on January 23, 2017
Do you love experimenting or testing your ideas about scientific phenomena? Turn that into a science fair project and share what you learn with our community.  Find a topic that interests you and that you are curious about. Develop a testable question. Create an experiment and repeat it multiple times. Collect your results. Present all your findings on a display board.  Bring the project to the auditorium on Monday, January 23, 2017. If you have questions or would like to see an example of a completed project, contact Echo Jacoway or Anne-Laure Denis.

Book Fair
Thank you for supporting the French Book Fair!

The P.A. would like to thank all the parents, students and staff who visited the French Book Fair, as well as the volunteers who helped to run the event. This year, the amount raised will benefit the Kermesse and other P.A. events.
Many of you are waiting on books. Because the Book Fair was quite successful, we had to order them and many had to ship from France; it takes longer than expected, but they should be here soon. We will give the books directly to your child when they are in. Thanks for your understanding.
See you next year!

Halloween Celebration and Grandparents Day at SDFAS

Just prior to the break, the students enjoyed an all-school Halloween celebration, in conjunction with Grandparents Day. These two annual celebrations united grandparents, parents and children to enjoy creative homemade costumes, a parade by preschool and elementary students and a wonderful potluck in middle school, provided by their parents. These two long-time school traditions gave grandparents the opportunity to visit the classrooms for a special "show and tell" time, offering up some unique stories of their childhood and past, as well as seeing the children all dressed up for a fun holiday.

In middle school, the variety of costumes and the care applied to many of the homemade costumes was exciting for the judges, who faced the difficult choice of selecting the best costume award. Fifth graders were also invited to enter the costume contest. Thank you to our families for their creativity, the good spirit and the support!

Preschoolers and kindergarteners delighted in posing for a photo shoot in their own Halloween patch and parading around campus to the great joy of the parents and grandparents. What a delightful and special memory for the children and their families and special friends!
Robotics and Coding
Robotique et programmation

Pictured: Ruby and Novaë.

This month, 1st graders began their robotics series of workshops with François Trégouët.
They will enjoy this activity until the December break. They are learning how to code, but they also count, add, subtract, and develop new vocabulary. This project will continue during the year with the other grades of the Elementary with methods and material adapted that will challenge the students and initiate them to coding.
For these projects, teachers are using new tools adapted to this program and purchased thanks to a donation: BeeBot, in 1st grade, Probot in 2nd and 3rd grade and Lego WeDo and Scratch for coding in 4th and 5th grade. The Beebots (picture) are small robots that can be programmed to move step by step along a line or on a surface.

The calendar for the workshops this year:
  • Nov. Dec.: 1st grade
  • Jan. Feb.: 2nd grade
  • Mar. Apr.: 3rd grade
  • May June: 4th-5th grade
ÉDITO

The second period of the school year, November and December is poised to offer your children many exciting activities: field trips, class activities, special projects in the arts, shows, and many new challenges to provide students with diverse opportunities to learn! It is also the beginning of the festive holiday season, with Thanksgiving and the Marché de Noël coming up soon on campus.
As excited as the students are about the upcoming holiday season, we shall continue to impart upon our students the school's basic values,  such as empathy and open-mindedness,  and to teach our children not to forget the community by standing ready to help others. This is the meaning behind the food drive we will hold this month, and I hope you will support and encourage your child as we will supply food to the many children and families in San Diego who need help.
Tomorrow is our annual Open House, and we will welcome many families who are eager to discover the benefits of bilingual education. Many of them mention the wonderful things they've heard about the school, thanks to you, our current parents! Thank you all for your continued support and enjoy reading your favorite newsletter!

Christian Jarlov, Head of School

Chers parents,

This year's Marché de Noël will take place on
Friday, December 9th between 2:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.

The Marché de Noël is our opportunity to transform our blacktop into a 'holiday gift shop' by inviting our favorite local artisans and farmers market vendors.

Ever wanted to have your own little holiday shop? Here's your chance! Parents and students are invited to show off their entrepreneurial spirit. High quality homemade goods, from jewelry to sweets, have been popular in the past.

Also, if you know of anyone else who is interested in becoming a vendor, please ask them to contact us at  [email protected]  or give us their information and we will do so.

Annual food drive at SDFAS
Collecte annuelle de nourriture
This year we will collect food for Feed America San Diego.
Their mission is to feed America's hungry through a nationwide network of member food banks and in San Diego to engage in the fight to end hunger.
Students will receive information in class and at Forum this week: they will meet representatives of the organization and see a short video explaining the situation in San Diego and the goals of the food drive.
The food drive will last one week: November 17 - November 23rd, until Thanksgiving. Students may drop off canned goods (soups, fruits, fish, chicken), nuts, or cereals. See specific guidelines in the poster.
Building Bridges between Elementary and Middle School

On November 3, the students in 5th and 7th grades gathered in the auditorium for a "Building Bridges" workshop. The goals were to get them to know each other better and create stronger relationships, and also for the 5th graders to get answers from their peers on their Middle School experience. The 5th graders had prepared a list of detailed questions, which were answered in small groups by 7th graders. They started the workshop with a "2 truths & 1 lie" ice breaker, and ended up with a group picture on stage.
Thank you so much to all students for their involvement, kindness and energy in sharing with their peers, and thank you to the 5th and 7th grade teachers for their much appreciated help!
3rd Graders Read to the PK1
Les CE2 lisent aux petites sections

Pictured: Jack & Guilhem - Lucie & Zoé - Philae & Mahé.

Older students share their reading skills with PK1 students. It is such a proud moment to be able to read to younger students! The third graders are highly motivated and the young ones love it! Congratulations to the 3rd graders for your efforts.
The high school application season is now in full swing!

Our annual High School Information Night took place in the SDFAS auditorium on October 13. Attended mainly by current 8 th grade students and parents, we were delighted to see some 6 th and 7 th g rade families in the audience as well. The evening started with an overview of the different kinds of high schools in the area (public, independent/ private, parochial), the different kinds of academic programs available (Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, etc.), and how the application process differs for public and private schools. This introduction was followed by a moderated discussion with our alumni panel, and the evening concluded with time for the audience to ask questions of our alumni students and alumni parents who were also present. We are grateful to our alumni and their parents for helping our current families get a sense of what high school student life is like. Our panel included SDFAS alumni currently attending: San Diego High School, Mission Bay High School's IB program, La Jolla High School, The Bishop's School, Francis Parker School, La Jolla Country Day School, Lycée International de Los Angeles, The Grauer School, and Cathedral Catholic. We are so proud to see the poised, motivated, mature, and thoughtful young men and women our alumni have become since graduating from SDFAS at the end of 8 th grade!

If you have questions regarding the high school process please contact Erin Stoller, High School Placement Counselor, at [email protected]

Joshua National Park and Pali Mountain Institute overnight field trips

From October 17 to October 20, 2016, 6th graders and 7th graders went on amazing overnight field trips: 6th graders experienced camping and the wonders of nature at the Joshua Tree State Park, while 7th graders enjoyed the pure air of the San Bernardino Mountains at the Pali Institute.
They developed a greater sense of community and class coherence, as well as confidence and self-reliance.
Social Entrepreneur Project

On October 13, 2016, all Middle School students took part in an exciting Social Entrepreneur Project, under the leadership of Diesa Seidel.

They were assigned in groups of seven to eight students with the following task: invent a socially responsible business idea; choose a social issue that you are passionate about that your business will be dedicated to. Explain what your business does, who will use it, and how it will make a positive difference in your local or global community.
After thorough brainstorming, they compiled a Powerpoint or a recording for their presentations in the auditorium.
Congratulations to our winners in the following categories:
  • most creative group work
  • most informative group work
  • most resourceful group work
  • best collaborative team

Learning to work together is a key element in the acquisition of 21st century skills, and this activity was a great educational opportunity to practice those skills.
Cross-Country Girls Finish 2nd, Boys 3rd

Congratulations to the SDFAS Girls and Boys Cross-Country teams who placed second and third, respectively, at our league championship meet on Monday.

More than 60 students from eight middle schools raced through a technical two-mile course at San Dieguito Park. The race was tough and gritty, pushing the mental resilience of our young athletes.

Lexine Arambulo (7th) and Adriana Telenti (8th) led the SDFAS girls team at the championship meet, placing 2nd and 3rd overall in their division. This was Lexine's and Adriana's third time receiving a medal (silver and bronze) for this cross-country season.
Chloe Gross and rookie 5th grader Emi Ayala-Sekiguchi all had breakthrough races this season, placing in the top of their division.
Congratulations to the entire girls team for bringing home another trophy for SDFAS!

For the boys, Nicola Redon and Giacomo Pagliuca ran an incredible race, placing second and third in the 6th grade division. Nicola and Giacomo have led their age division all season, and were awarded silver and bronze medals at the finals.

BRAVO to all our fearless runners!
