A Word From The Pastor...

Dear Friends,

I had a man in my previous congregation who, after retiring as an airline pilot, became a Foundation Officer at the Tennyson Center for Children in Denver. The Tennyson Center use to be called "The Colorado Christian Home." His name is Dave Killen. The Tennyson Center is the largest facility in Colorado that provides housing, counseling, and educational services for children who have been so traumatized by abuse and neglect that they cannot function in normal home, Foster Care, or Educational environments. At any given time there are about 120 K-12 children in the full time residence and another 80 that come in for the school and day services. The average stay for the resident children is 18 months. From the Center they enter back into the Foster Care System or into the safe environment of non-abusive family member. During their time at the Tennyson Center the children are given intense counseling. 50% of the Tennyson Center funding comes from church, private, and business donations.

Dave, when talking about stewardship, would always say that the question is not "How Much Of My Financial Resources Is God Calling Me To Give Away?" Rather, the question is "How Much Of My Financial Resources Is God Calling Me To Keep For Myself."

Wow! That is a different question isn't it. How much is God calling me to keep for myself? For me personally that question started to transform my understanding of stewardship. When my children were younger and Anita and I had educational bills and other family expenses, I felt God was calling me to keep for myself 90% of our resources. Now that the children are grown and we are more financially secure, it only makes sense that that percentage would go down and that Anita and I can give more away for good causes.

Of course this is a personal question. But I do invite you to give the question your most prayerful thought and attention. How much is God calling you to keep for yourself? And of that which you give away, how much is God calling you to give to support the ministry of your church?

As I hope you know, Sunday, November 20th, will be our Stewardship Consecration Day when we will dedicate to the Lord's service what we intend to give to the church in 2017. Next week you will be receiving in the mail a 2017 Estimate of Giving Card. We hope that you will be in worship that Sunday to participate in the Consecration Service. If you can't be in worship, then we encourage you to mail the card back to the church. Once we have an Estimate of our 2017 Financial resources our Financial Officers will put together our 2017 Ministry Budget which will be presented to the congregation in early January.

Hope to see you in Church this Sunday

A Second Word from the Pastor - Thoughts about the election

Today I thought I would re-share a Pastoral E-mail Letter that I wrote to the congregation on Wednesday morning following Tuesday's election.

Dear Pine Street Church Friends,

No doubt, this has been a bitter and difficult election season. Undoubtedly some of us woke up this morning feeling jubilant and relieved, and some of us woke up this morning feeling the pain of despair. I know that for me, and perhaps for you as well, this election cycle became very personal, perhaps more personal than any election in my lifetime. It became so personal that some of my own ties with close relatives and friends I love dearly became strained and torn. I pray that the damage can soon be repaired.

This morning I have been reflecting and meditating on a passage from the Old Testament that I want to share with you. It is from of the prophet Micah, chapter six, verse 8.

"And what does the Lord require of you but to do justice,
and to love kindness,
and to walk humbly with your God."

As we all sort through our own feelings today, perhaps this passage can help guide our thoughts and our actions. No matter if our candidates won or lost, let us resolve to continue working for justice, let us resolve to continue celebrating that which is good and kind in the world, and let us resolve to continue to walk humbly with our God, knowing that God is God, and we are not.

If any of you would like to simply get together with me in the coming days and weeks to discuss any spiritual feelings or insights you have, I would love to sit down with you and listen.

Hope to see you in church this Sunday.

Your Interim Pastor,
Duncan

The Spirituality of Van Gogh

This Sunday, November 13th, we have invited Waverly Matthews to fill the pulpit.  Waverly and his son Sawyer have been attending Pine Street Church for several months.   Waverly earned his Master of Theological Studies from Iliff Seminary in Denver.  One of his favorite topics of study is the Spirituality of Art.  This Sunday he will be sharing his thoughts on the Spirituality of Van Gogh.

Missions Update

Volunteers needed for our church's BOHO Sunday Snacks Program

Our church will shelter overnight Boulder Outreach for Homeless Overflow (BOHO) homeless in our Fellowship Hall on Sunday nights as an Emergency Warming Center (EWC) starting November 20 and ending in late April. We'll provide snacks from 7:00-8:00 p.m. on these Sunday evening through our church's BOHO Sunday Snacks Program, where we need volunteers from 6:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. to prepare/serve snacks and clean up afterwards.  If you're interested in volunteering, please contact BOHO Sunday Snacks Program Volunteer Coordinator Mary Beth Mankin at -- [email protected] -- to let her know of your interest and availability. You may also volunteer via our church website's Missions webpage at -- http://www.pinestreetchurch.net/missions.html.  Thanks for your support of our church's BOHO Sunday Snacks Program!

DID YOU KNOW......

Did You Know  that Chloe Grand-Lord  was a HIP HOP dancer with Street Side Dance Presents "Street Side's Toy Shop" on Saturday Evening, November 5th, at Boulder High School.   Chloe was a part of the RAW FLAVA Dancers which performed, LEGO PEOPLE &  CLOWNY CLOWNS.  Did you also know that Chloe is an outstanding Hip Hop Dancer.   Thanks Polly for sharing this "Did You Know" news with us.

Did You Know Oasis - (formerly the Women's Study Group) meets every Wednesday from 1:30-3:00 for fellowship, study and prayer. We chose this new name because for many of us this time together represents a true "Oasis" in a busy week. Over the past several years, we have studied a wide range of books, each designed to provoke thoughtful dialogue and spiritual growth. Attendance varies from about 4-10 depending on travel schedules and other commitments. ALL are welcome. For more information contact Carol Simpson ([email protected] or 720-771-4052).

Did You Know there's something besides eating it that you can do with all your leftover Halloween candy? We all buy the kind we like but often do not want to be tempted by large quantities of leftover candy. If you have too much, bring it to church this Sunday or next and we will bring smiles to many faces when we share it at our first BOHO Sunday evening on Nov. 20th. Many thanks...

Did You Know that last Sunday afternoon several in our church met to begin thinking about what a comprehensive "Arts Ministry" would look like at Pine Street Church. They asked the question "If a visitor came to our church four years from now, what type of Arts Ministry would they see that was visible, and what things would they discover behind the scenes if they looked harder?" We hope in the next few weeks to have such a "Future Story" to share with the congregation. From there we will start the strategic planning and work to make the Future Story a reality.

Did You Know that we will be decorating the church for Advent and Christmas on Saturday morning, December 3rd. More details will follow. Please put this on your calendar and plan on coming to help. It's always great fun.

Did You Know that Boulder Opera has begun rehearsals three days a week in our church as they prepare for their upcoming performances of the famous Opera Elixir of Love. You can find out more about Boulder opera by clicking here.
