Happy November neighbors!

Last month was a busy month for us.  In addition to my City Council committee meetings, regular briefings with City department heads, monthly community meetings, and constituent meetings, we had 6 additional community meetings added to our schedule.  For those of you who are interested, here is a breakdown of where my time was spent on council business this month. (Note, this list this does not include the marathon council meetings on Tuesday nights or the meetings that my staff attend on my behalf, which are numerous!)

This month, I spent my council-related time attending the following:
- 16 community or non-profit events;
- 9 community meetings sponsored by my office;
- 17 constituent meetings;
- 9 Department Head briefings;
- 2 staff meetings with my council office team; and
- 7 meetings related to committees that I sit on or chair as a result of my work on Council.

As you can see, it has been a busy month especially since ALL of these meetings were held, before or after my regular work day, during my lunch hour or on the weekends!! Anyone else feel tired after reading that? I am always amazed at how much we accomplish in a month's time.

November is a special time of the year.  On November 11th we have the opportunity to honor our veterans.  Veteran's Day is a time when we stop to reflect on the sacrifice men and women who serve our country make for our freedom.  I want to wish all of our veterans a very restful Veteran's Day.  I want to especially thank my husband for his service in the US Coast Guard during the Gulf War.

November is also a time we give great thanks for the blessings we have in our lives. Since I have been serving on council, I have learned so much about the goodness in our community.  There are literally hundreds of non-profit organizations in Long Beach that work day-in and day-out to help people who are in need. Whether the issue is homelessness, helping crime victims, supporting our youth, promoting education, easing poverty, supporting the Arts, historical preservation, etc. we have people who are committed to making the world around us good for everyone.  To me, the energy these people bring to our city, is what fuels me.  Not surprisingly, these people always approach me from a place of appreciation and mutual collaboration. I consider the men and women who serve on non-profit boards and staff my partners in my ONLY goal of making our community a better place. It takes a village and I am grateful for our village of Long Beach.  These people don't just talk the talk, they walk the walk. Which brings me to our newest adventure, called CD3 Walks the Walk.  This new walking/community service group will meet monthly for a 2 hour walk and community service project.  This idea was developed when resident Lori Barber came to me and said she didn't just want to complain about problems in her community, but she wanted to be a partner in helping find a solution.  Together we developed the idea of a walking group, dedicated to also doing good in the community.  Join us on November 13th at 8 am at Marine Stadium Park. Lori will map out a walk for us to Granada Beach parking lot. There, we will pick up trash, enjoy some coffee and donuts, and then walk back. We will do this every month. PLEASE join us and help make Lori's goal of being a solutions-oriented member of the community a reality.

Happy Thanksgiving to all of you and your family.

3RD DISTRICT COMMUNITY EVENTS
Third  District Community Meeting

Councilwoman Price will be holding the next 3rd District Community meeting on Thursday, November 10th at the SeaPort Marina Hotel (6400 E. Pacific Coast Highway) at 6:00 pm.

Our guest speaker will be talking about SEASP (Southeast Area Specific Plan) and provide an update on the general development and plans for this area.  This is an important plan that would guide development standards for the Southeast side of Long Beach. We hope those interested in this project will take advantage of this opportunity to learn more about the Planning Department's proposal and be a part of this meeting.

Belmont Shore Median Landscape Project - Community Meeting

Last month we held a community meeting to gather input from the residents about what they would like to see for improvements in the medians on 2nd Street in Belmont Shore.

On November 9th at 6:30 pm, Architect Charles Foley from Hirsh & Associates, Inc. will present a few different options, at this second meeting, for feedback from the community.  Options will include species of trees and grasses (about 3-4 options for each) that would work well in the medians and more specific options for lighting as well as decorative crosswalks (stamped asphalt vs. stamped concrete vs. pavers).

Please join us at the Field Office for this wonderful opportunity to have an input in the design of your community.

Wednesday, November 9th

CD3 WALKS THE WALK

Let's come together as a community. The 3rd District is a passionate group and here's your chance to get involved while getting some exercise. We will walk, talk and beautify our community on Sunday, November 13th. Our walk will start from Marine Stadium Park at 8 am with trash bags in hand. This is also your chance to meet more of your neighbors who care about their community as much as you do. Coffee and donuts will be provided mid-way through our walk at the Granada Beach parking lot.

If you can't join us this time, we hope you'll consider joining us next month on December 11th. We will pick a new route and possibly a different task of beautifying the 3rd District.

Recap of October Events

Anti Bullying Workshop
Our 3rd Annual Anti Bullying and Social Media Awareness workshop took place on Saturday, October 29th, and once again, it was a tremendous event on the California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) campus! The free anti-bullying workshop brought in approximately 120 middle schoolers and their parents and was co-hosted with the City's Safe Long Beach Violence Prevention Plan (Safe Long Beach).

Our focus this year was on bullying, safety and social media awareness. Attendees were invited to participate as a group, as well as in targeted breakout sessions for adults and kids. We welcomed special keynote speaker, Erin Runnion of The Joyful Child Foundation who taught us empowerment tools as part of her BRAVE program.

Other speakers that helped us navigate bullying and social media were Hutx Colunga, teacher at Marshall Middle School and Kyle Becker, founder of The Kids Theater Company.  Shaila Saint, parent educator & adjunct professor at LBCC and Mollie Bennett, K-12 educator & owner of Hoopla! Events processed the information with the parents and helped them develop a strategy for their home.

A big thank you to all who participated and Matt Higgins from Dunkin' Donuts who provided the sweet treats, coffee and cocoa! We look forward to bringing this event to the 3rd District again in 2017.

Ocean Blvd. Road Diet
We recently held a community meeting on the Ocean Blvd. Road Diet. The meeting allowed for residents to see a presentation and learn more about the reasoning, explanation, and implementation of the project. The Director of Public Works took questions and allowed the city Traffic Engineer, and representatives from Police, Fire, and Special Events to also respond to questions and explain what can be expected from this project.  Ocean Blvd Study

Belmont Parking Study
The Walker Parking Consultants recently completed their Belmont Shore Parking Study and presented that to the residents at a community meeting. This study provides some base level information, parking data, and some proposals on how to best manage the available parking in the Belmont Shore area. This is only the first step. From here the City will be evaluating this report and looking to see what recommendations may be possible to implement. Parking Study

Land Use Design
A meeting was held to provide information on the Planning Department's draft Land Use Plan. This is a guiding document for land use and design city wide. The comment period for residents to provide their input on this project has been extended and will now be open until November 14th, so please provide your comment to [email protected] so that this plan can best reflect the needs of the city.    Land Use Study

East San Pedro Bay Ecosystem Restoration Feasibility Study
The East San Pedro Bay Ecosystem Restoration Feasibility Study is being conducted over the next several years by the Army Corps of Engineers. This study is evaluating if measures should be implemented to improve the habitat and ecological sustainability of East San Pedro Bay. This is a preliminary study that evaluates what may be possible. From here they will begin narrowing down what could be implementable.

6th Street Bike Blvd Project
A meeting was recently held to provide an update on the 6th St. Bike Boulevard Project. These designs include one roundabout and four traffic circles along 6th St. through Alamitos Heights as the boulevard leads into Belmont Heights. This is a project that has been almost ten years in the making and seeks to increase the connectivity of bicycle access throughout the city while also calming traffic to reduce safety concerns for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists. Further progress is expected on this project in the coming year as funding is secured from federal grants.

Jack Cunningham - Chief of Staff

I am pleased to announce the promotion of Jack Cunningham to the position of Third District Chief of Staff.  Jack joined our office a little over a year ago and immediately showed great potential to take on some of the complex policy issues that we face in the City of Long Beach and in the 3rd District.  Jack's experience in the field of public policy is impressive.   He has worked for
a state senator, and a member of Congress.  He recently obtained his Master's in Public Policy from NYU, which makes sense, since he has a genuine passion for public policy and municipal governance.  Since July, Jack has been serving the Third District in the role of District Office Director AND Chief of Staff. His work quality has been remarkable.  He has been very busy meeting all of the stakeholders in the City and developing an expertise in numerous areas. Jack has been a tremendous partner to me and I am grateful to have him serving as my top advisor.  Jack and his wife Jen recently moved to the Third District from the Fourth District.  They are expecting their first child, Max, in December.  Please help me welcome Jack to his new role.

We also have a new team member who will be joining us next week. You will hear much more about our new team member later on!

BUSINESS

One thing that is not so small about The Small Café is the menu.  Nestled among the shops of Naples, in the 3rd District, The Small Café offers cute patio seating and an adorable interior. The restaurant has been around since 2000, and is considered a popular local eatery that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner with beer and wine.

Once inside The Small Café, excellent service, friendly faces, and the cozy atmosphere that embodies a "local secret spot"' will welcome you. The menu includes hearty and healthy American and Mexican style entrees, fresh baked treats, and even mimosas!  I especially love the counter seating for those dining solo. The booths are reminiscent of diners that promote friendly service and conversations.

The Small Café brings back regulars on a daily basis. It continues to steadily grow because of the relationships fostered and their commitment to the people they serve. Great small businesses are built on dedicated, hard working people that keep them running and The Small Café is no exception.

New Cross walks coming... Bluff Park and Alamitos Heights

Traffic improvements and public safety have always been a major focus for our office. So we are very excited that there will be new stop signs being installed at First Street and Coronado in the Bluff Park area, and at Havana and Colorado in Alamitos Heights. Both locations were evaluated by the Traffic Engineering Department based on frequent concerns from residents. We are very thankful for the Traffic Engineers being responsive to community concerns.  Both stop signs should be installed around mid December.

City Signage -
Wayfinding Signage Program

The City of Long Beach is developing a comprehensive signage program, and is seeking resident and community stakeholder input on factors to consider in designing new signs to be installed throughout the City. The design template for these new signs will reflect the community's values and identity, and be used to create welcoming, cohesive, and effective signage for gateway entries to the City, coastal access, and parking in the Downtown.

The need for establishing a Citywide sign program was identified as part of the Fiscal Year 2016-2017 budget. In December 2015, the City issued a request for proposals and selected Selbert Perkins Design as the consultant to create design guidelines that will be used to implement a uniform look and theme for new signs in the public realm.

Please use the link below to take the survey and give us your input on what you would like to see by means of signage for the City of Long Beach.
