Alamo Colleges, City, SAISD Celebrate Opening of the Eastside Education and Training Center
A host of dignitaries cut the ribbon to open the new Eastside Education and Training Center in the Eastside Promise Zone.
Alamo Colleges Board Chair Dr. Yvonne Katz, Trustee Denver McClendon and Chancellor Dr. Bruce Leslie joined community leaders and the City of San Antonio recently to celebrate the grand opening of the 56,000-square-foot Eastside Education & Training Center (EETC) located at 4551 Dietrich Road. The facility, which occupies the former Pfeiffer Elementary School, is a one-stop education and workforce development center designed for the Eastside community in partnership with Alamo Colleges and the San Antonio Independent School District (SAISD). The EETC is modeled after Alamo Colleges' highly successful Westside Education & Training Center.

The City served as a co-applicant with Alamo Colleges and SAISD to secure a $1.5 million grant from the U.S. Economic Development Administration to renovate the facility. The City's Fiscal Year 2017 General Fund budget allocated $100,000 to open and operate the EETC for the next two years.

In July 2015, the City partnered with Alamo Colleges and other organizations to launch the Promise Zone to Work initiative to prepare Eastside residents for 21st century job opportunities by providing free job training classes in high-demand occupations. To date, 325 residents have received career certificates in nursing, IT, welding, heavy equipment operation and other areas.

To sustain these efforts, the City partnered with SAISD to provide free job training classes, GED preparation, job placement, financial counseling and child care in one location. The EETC will provide residents with direct access to workforce, education and support services that create pathways to quality jobs and/or higher education.

Alamo Colleges - Northwest Vista College Opens Instructional Innovation Center

Alamo Colleges - Northwest Vista College (NVC) opened its new Instructional Innovation Center (IIC) in Manzanillo Hall, Room 204F on November 2. The IIC offers faculty a location where they can use a computer, obtain technical help, meet with colleagues, participate in development and training sessions, conduct small get-togethers or simply relax. The center features eight state-of-the-art workstations and numerous Dell and Apple® laptops, tablets, and iPads. It also houses the Teaching with Technology staff.

Fresh coffee is always available, and the relaxing music and homey atmosphere offer a welcome respite. Artwork throughout the center was created by various faculty and staff members. One corner of the room has been dubbed "The Nook" because it contains two comfortable chairs, a chess table, a bookcase full of interesting materials, other pastimes and board games, and "Inky" - the center's mascot.

"The idea is to have a place where faculty are welcome at any time to work, to get help, or just to escape to a quiet place for a while," said Laura Lawrence, director of NVC Instructional Professional Development. "The center was furnished at no expense to the college; all technology and furniture was already on campus. Ultimately, our goal is to supplement the center's staffing with faculty volunteers who can help their fellow faculty."
