St. Michael's Academy
:
Today we had our full school assembly for the Walk-a-thon awards. I was so impressed with the level of participation from all our students. Thank you parents, friends and relatives for helping to make this event a success. We are deeply grateful for your commitment to the mission.
Next week will be a very short week for our students. On Tuesday, we will hold our parent/teacher conferences, at which time you will receive your child's first report card of the year. All parents have received a scheduled conference time. Please be as punctual as possible so that we can maintain a timely schedule.
And then on Friday, we will be off from school as we celebrate Veterans' Day.
Enjoy a nice weekend.

From The Classroom of Mrs. Nicollelo - Grade 6
|
From Mrs. Nicolello's Literature Class
One of my favorite reasons for being a reading teacher is assigning book reports every term so I can see just how creative my students can be (and give their grade a boost in the process). I always get some very surprising results every time I do these projects. They involve taking a piece of literature and turning it into art that everyone can enjoy.
This October, 6th and 7th graders celebrated Halloween by creating scary and creepy book reports. The purpose was to read a creepy book and do a project related to Halloween-a holiday most middle-schoolers enjoy. The students were required to read a book that had a "spooky" element to it, or the faint of heart could read a mystery or suspense story. The 6th grade made trick or treat bags with homemade "candy" inside. Some made traditional candy like Skittles and Hershey Bars, while others invented their own like zombie eyes and "crunchy bones". On the six pieces of candy, they had to put elements from the books they read for examples, the plot, setting, characters, mood, fear factor, and the spooky element. They also had to rate the books, from zero to five using skulls, pumpkins, ghosts, or eyeballs!
The 7th graders made lift-the-flap Halloween posters. They had to create a Halloween scene and make flaps that hid the information from the book, like characters, conflicts, the complications, the climax, resolution, and the fear factor. Many students created a haunted house scene while others set theirs in graveyards, morgues, and crime scenes. The students made many creative projects and had a fun time getting into the Halloween spirit!

CSI Continues

Our Crime Scene Investigation Continues
Our crime scene investigation series continued this week with a different focus. This week the group learned why crimes are sometimes committed and what motivates people to commit them. Many times, crimes are committed by struggling addicts.
Joining the group was recovering addict, Mr. Brian Naatz, who very honestly described the different twists and turns his life had taken over the years and what led to his addiction problems. The students received a look into the world of addictions and how it is a disease that does not discriminate and affects people from all walks of life.

Prayer Corner

St. Michael the Archangel, pray for us!
We pray for all St. Michael's Academy students, families, faculty, and staff, and their special intentions.
Richard Ricci
Cynthia Bruso
Jonathan Herron
Nicola Polimeni
Gary Matthess
And we pray in a special way for our recently departed.
Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
Please remember to keep Miss Brown in your prayers during this difficult time for her. She will be taking an indefinite medical leave of absence.
Our prayers continue to be with Mr. Rancitelli, who is undergoing treatment for a cancer recurrence. We also ask that you keep
Mrs. Rancitelli in your prayers as well. She recently broke both ankles and her wrist in a bad fall. Each week, a different homeroom sends him cards. If your family would like to send a card, please send it to school with your child, clearly marked for Mr. Rancitelli. His family has set up a blog to write about this experience.
