Marisa Edmonston & Megan Puget
Congratulations to Garces Seniors Marisa Edmonston and Megan Puget. They are among four area high school students selected by the Kern Community Foundation's Women's & Girls' Fund to serve as community members on the organization's Philanthropy award selection committee. The pair were chosen based on their community service work. Marisa founded a community service project, Pennies From Heaven, four years ago, to gather loose change to help the needy. Megan helps run the Kern Autism Network's sibling support groups. Each year the Women's & Girls' Fund selects several high school students to sit on its grants allocation and scholarship selection committees.

Theology Class Artists
Mrs. Sierra wanted to bring a piece of curriculum to life and enhance the discussion in her class so she enlisted the assistance of Garces art teacher, Mark Brown, and had the students make beautiful stained art projects that now hang in the window of her classroom. How does stained glass fit with a theology lesson? Juniors were learning about the iconoclast controversy between the West and the East. The dispute was over whether it was wrong to make any images that illustrate God and/or human beings. Emperor Leo III wanted to get rid of icons but Pope Gregory II opposed him arguing that art helps people understand and remember the story of Christ. At the end, both West and East agreed that the use of icons are actually beneficial for the worshiper.

Ag Class is a Smashing Success!
Mrs. Ashleigh Rossi's "Introduction to Agriculture" class is off to a great start. The students have built garden beds on campus and planted "crops". This week they spent time smashing walnuts and making walnut butter. Mrs. Rossi is incorporating activities to help make learning about agriculture more engaging for the students. The students completed the activity during the class discussion on California commodities.
The students in the photos are Sean Hatten, Joseph Tobias, Maddie Reyes, Gino Franconi, Nick Goyeneche, Matt Renzi, and Michael Barnett.

Mrs. Kloock - Making a Difference
Our faculty is amazing. We know it, our students know it, and now Stanford University knows it! Garces alumna and freshman at Stanford,
Danielle Echeverria, nominated Mrs. Jennifer Kloock to be recognized for all she does for her students. As Danielle so eloquently stated, Mrs. Kloock is a "trusted, dedicated, and compassionate teacher and mentor." On the same day, Mrs. Kloock also received an email from Garces alumna Maci Petrini thanking her for all she did to prepare Maci for college. Maci is a freshman at Oklahoma State University. Often, Mrs. Kloock is the last car in the parking lot. She is truly dedicated to her profession and to our students. We are blessed to have her as part of our Garces family.

Message from
Lou Ann Durrett
Director of Campus Affairs and Parent Club Moderator
The Garces Parent Club held its first meeting on Wednesday night with about 30 parents in attendance. Our new president,
Mrs. Michelle Pisano, rolled out the new Parent Club Mission Statement which is:
"The Garces Parent Club provides volunteer support to the school community through social, academic, faith, and enrichment activities. We provide social opportunities for the Garces Parents to form friendships and build a strong community. We are proud of the support and working together with the Garces Catholic faculty, families, and students."
Along with being a welcoming presence for our new families and current families, the Parent Club will work closely with the Director of Campus Ministry, Brian Cobb, to provide support as needed for the faith formation of the students. The idea is not to be on campus all the time, but to help out with little things to make the student experience even better.
Wednesday night we began to have parents sign up for a variety of committees. If you are interested in assisting with one of the committees, please contact me at
[email protected].
The committee and ideas are fluid and will change as we grow and parents have suggestions.
Faith - work with Campus Ministry on faith based activities such as decorating the altar on a monthly basis, prayer cards or snacks for retreats, setting up times for parents to come in and pray the Rosary, etc.
Adoration
- volunteer an hour once a month for Adoration in the Chapel one Wednesday a month from 12 noon - 4:00 PM.
Parent to Parent - help create an incoming freshman parent guide, tutor resource list, etc.
Teacher Appreciation - bring in a treat or a prayer card one month for the teachers
Outreach - provide a meal or transportation to a family in need due to an illness or loss of a loved
Christmas Mass - help host/plan the first night time family Christmas Mass scheduled for December 14th
Guest Speakers - some ideas are finding speakers for single mom issues, parent date night, dealing with social media, etc.
Campus Enrichment - talents or a business that can offer support to student activities or campus projects
There will additional activities that will need support - such as all the graduation activities in the Spring - such as Senior Awards, College Signing Day, Baccalaureate Mass, and Graduation. So please stay tuned and we will communicate with you in the Friday newsletter and, beginning next week, we will keep the Parent Club page updated on the website.
Thank you to everyone who was able to make the meeting on Wednesday night and thank you to everyone who has joined the Parent Club. As you can see, the funds will be put to good use.
If you would still like to join, or contribute to, the Parent Club, you can click on the link below.
Parent Club
Our next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, December 7th at 5:30 PM in the Chapel. It's a week before the Christmas Mass and will give us some time to rally volunteers to help out with our first ever nighttime family Mass to celebrate the birth of Christ.
We hope to see all of you on December 7th and at the Christmas Mass.
Thank you for sending your child to Garces. We hope that by working together, we can truly give your child the gift of faith along with an exceptional high school education. |

Bakersfield College - Dates to Remember in November
The registration process for Bakersfield College will begin soon. Students must complete several steps in order to take classes this fall. Garces will be offering two of the sessions on campus this month so that students do not have to go to BC. If a student does not attend these meetings, he/she is responsible for going to BC to complete them on his/her own. It is recommended that students complete these steps even if BC is their "safety" school.
