Important Parent Events
Membership meeting & substance abuse forum
Please join us in the library for our November PTSA membership meeting next week!  We will begin at 7 pm with a brief business meeting.  Highlights of our fall teacher grants projects will be shared and we will discuss the election of a Nominating Committee to recruit next year's Board of Directors.  Our parent education topic is still being finalized, so watch for a Kang postcard next week to announce the topic and speaker.

Suzanne Peterson, LW's Prevention-Intervention counselor, and a student panel from the LWHS Drug Prevention team will be featured presenters at a Substance Abuse Awareness Community Forum on Wednesday, November, 30 at 7pm in the LWHS Theater.  They will be joined by Michael Roberts (founder of Amber's Hope), SRO Tyler Davidson, and school administrators in a panel discussion about the substance abuse issues in our community and what we can all do to confront them. See the forum flyer and student flyer for more information.

PTSA News
Year End Giving Alert
Pass the Pouch Update
As you and your family plan year-end giving, consider the LWPTSA. We are a great cause and fully tax deductible. Check with your HR department to see if your gift can be matched and what forms you need to sign and turn in. You may be able to double your dollars!

Our PTSA membership is going STRONG with over 500 members, and that demonstrates loudly the support in our school community for PTSA. The other part of PTSA is the funding of many of our programs. We hope to reach our Pass the Pouch fundraising goal of $21,000 by year's end. You can help us. The funds are critical for PTSA programs such as teacher grants, Sheeley scholarships for seniors and the $50 teacher mini-grants. Together with your help we have raised just under $14,000. Thank you to all who have INVESTED IN OUR KIDS! If you haven't had the chance to give, please click here! By doing so you are making an important investment in the students of LWHS.

We Show Our Appreciation
Every month, the PTSA's Staff Appreciation Committee shows our awesome Kang staff how appreciative we are of all their efforts. In August, we hosted a Welcome Back Breakfast as they came back to work while we were all still enjoying our summer. In September, 150 Kang staff members found treat bags in their mailboxes with fresh pens, sticky notes, protein bars and of course, chocolate. In October, we hosted a Caramel Apple Buffet for the staff to enjoy. Thank you very much to all the parents who donate goodies to make these events a great success!

Staff Thank You to the PTSA

Thanks to one of the $50 teacher grants provided by the PTSA, students in my classes can borrow a stylus to use with their laptops.  More and more classrooms are using Microsoft OneNote, because it provides great learning tools for students, as well as lots of flexibility in the type of work students can do.  Having styluses available for students lets them choose to hand-write or type in class, and so make better use of the program.  Thank you PTSA!  -- Jill Berge, LWHS English/SS teacher

Counseling & Career Center
PSAT Results

On October 19 all sophomores and many juniors took the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Typically, College Board sends the results in early January.  Counselors will meet with students in the PAC to quickly review and interpret their Score Reports.  Students are also encouraged to log on to the website given to review test questions and even try some challenge questions.  Students can also go to their Math and English teachers with PSAT questions and/or read their interpretation booklets for additional explanation on the variables that can affect scores.

This is the first pre-college type of test for most of our sophomores and our goal is to have students look at their results with those variables in mind.  They may be disappointed in their results, but they can take consolation in the fact that much learning can take place between now and the spring of their junior year when they will be taking the SAT I or the ACT.  And, if their scores are high now, it can be a good boost in their self-confidence.

Senior Update

On October 19, while the freshmen, sophomores, and juniors were listening to speakers or taking the PSAT or the ASVAB, seniors were managing their own busy schedules.  Seniors chose from seven different workshops, including the College Fair in the gym.  Because they chose the workshops that were important to them, students were, for the most part, attentive and asked good questions.  If seniors still have questions or wish to further discuss their post-high school options, please encourage them to meet with their counselor.   These powerpoint presentations are all available on LWHS's website.

College Applications

Students are responsible for providing addressed envelopes for transcripts. Test scores must be requested directly from the College Board or ACT.  Students are encouraged to submit their applications early and not wait until deadlines. Remember, December 1 is the cutoff date to request transcripts and to request the counselor to complete the  Common Application School Report Form for January 1 due dates.  Directions for transcript submission are printed on the request form (available in the Counseling Center) and are also explained on the school's website. Students are reminded that the Counseling Center will be closed for winter break from 3 pm on Friday, December 16, 2016, until 7:30 am on Monday, January 4, 2017.  During this period we are unable to respond to emails or phone calls, so please advise your senior student to have his/her college application questions answered prior to the winter closure.

Check Out College Price Calculators
The U.S. government mandated that all colleges that wish to continue distributing federal grants or loans must post net price calculators (NPC's) to their websites.  By plugging in your financial numbers, you can see an approximate cost to attend a particular college.

Cleopatra On Trial
AP World History students put Cleopatra on trial this month. They had an interesting time deciding whether Cleopatra's decisions to ally with the Romans were appropriate, and whether her legacy is impacted by the fact that she was a female leader.
