Registration Open for Annual Winter Training Conference
  The NYS Sheriffs' Association's 83rd Annual Winter Training Conference will take place January 23 - 26, 2017 at The Desmond in Albany, NY.  Please visit our website for more information and to register to attend or exhibit.
Election Recap
The Office of Sheriff was on the ballot in only 3 counties yesterday: Genesee, Niagara, and Steuben. In Niagara the incumbent, Sheriff Jim Voutour, ran unopposed. In both Genesee and Steuben counties, the current Undersheriff ran unopposed after the sitting Sheriff announced plans to retire at the end of the year.  
Races with No Incumbent
In Genesee County, Sheriff Gary Maha chose not to run for an 8th term. Current Undersheriff William Sheron, Jr. announced his intention to run for Sheriff back in January and later received  Republican Party endorsement. He appeared on yesterday’s ballot unopposed, thus winning election to his first term as Genes County Sheriff . Early in his career, Sheriff-Elect Sheron was promoted to sergeant at age 26, the youngest sergeant in Genesee County history. He also founded a ground-breaking drug task force and served as Chief Deputy before becoming Undersheriff in 1996.
In Steuben County, Sheriff David Cole announced in May that he would not run for a second term. A week later, Undersheriff James Allard announced his intention to run for Sheriff and gained the Republican Party endorsement. He appeared on yesterday's ballot unopposed, thus winning election to his first term as Steuben County Sheriff. The Sheriff-Elect served for 21 years with the City of Corning Police Department. He retired in 2009 as a Lieutenant and  became Undersheriff in 2013.  He also was a session director for the Southern Tier Law Enforcement Academy at Corning Community College. 
Unopposed Incumbent

One Sheriff appeared on the ballot unopposed and won re-election. Niagara County Sheriff Jim Voutour was re-elected to a 3rd term.
Erie County Sheriff Tim Howard Unveils Pink-Wrapped Patrol Car for Breast Cancer Awareness

Erie County Sheriff Tim Howard unveiled an Erie County Sheriff's patrol vehicle, wrapped in pink graphics to raise awareness about breast cancer and to honor survivors of the disease. The vehicle was stationed outside New Era Field during Sunday's Buffalo Bills game, where the Erie County Sheriff's Office is the lead law enforcement agency for the Bills. The specially wrapped patrol car will later be assigned to various districts across the county and visible to thousands of residents as a reminder of the ongoing fight to cure breast cancer.

Ontario County Sheriff Phil Povero, President of the Board of The Partnership for Ontario County, presented two Youth Awards, to Justin Boyer and Mackenna Bluett, in honor of retiring 54th District NYS Senator Michael Nozzolio at their annual meeting last week. Sheriff Povero said, "The Partnership Board dedicates this Youth Award in honor of Senator Nozzolio's unwavering support and dedication to the youth of this community. We sincerely appreciate his state advocacy and his focus on youth development. His support has allowed the Partnership to provide additional prevention programming and we now serve at least 22% of the youth under the age of 18."

Drowsy Driving Prevention Week: Nov 6 - 13, 2016
In an effort to reduce the number of fatigue-related crashes and to save lives, the National Sleep Foundation is declaring November 6-13, 2016 to be Drowsy Driving Prevention Week®. This annual campaign provides public education about the under-reported risks of driving while drowsy and countermeasures to improve safety on the road.
