The Siena Scribe

November 8, 2016
Dear Parents,

I know it is not quite Thanksgiving yet, but I must offer a litany of thanks at this time - over the past week or so, I have experienced so, so much generosity from among our families and faculty!

Thank you to our families who assisted with our Open House this past Sunday.  Parent volunteers set up and served refreshments to our guests; they welcomed the prospective families warmly and led them on tours around our campus.  Student volunteers came in their dress uniform and demonstrated various fun lesson activities.  The event was well-attended!

Thank you to our Gala Auction volunteers who have been super busy soliciting donations and sponsors, organizing class theme baskets and projects, and promoting this event among their family and friends.  A special "thank you" goes to the Ponte family who worked after every Mass over the weekend to speak with parishioners and invite them to come to our auction.

Thank you to Mrs. O'Shields who painted and decorated our school lobby last Saturday.  Thank you to her special helpers (three students who were at school for the basketball games) who gave their time and efforts to assist Mrs. O'Shields.

Thank you to our 4th grade parents who hosted our monthly Faculty/Staff Appreciation luncheon today.  Thank you for your generosity - our teachers and staff feel super appreciated!

Thank you to Coach LoPresti and all our coaches and assistant coaches who got our Blazer Basketball teams off to a great start of the season.

Thank you to our 7th and 8th grade parents who have assisted or who will assist with our 8th and 7th grade retreats.  These retreats require a lot of time and effort especially from our parent chaperones.

Last but not least, thank you to our teachers and staff who continue to put forth tremendous efforts to support our students and school every day.  So many of you, parents, at various times have sent beautifully written emails and notes to thank a particular teacher who has touched your child's heart in a special way or at crucial moment.  I want to share with you an email which Mrs. Garrity received near the beginning of this school year from a graduate of St. Catherine's:

I just wanted to let you know that after 4 years I have finally published the research I did back in 7th grade in your class with Harvard's Journal of Emerging Investigators. I wanted to thank you for being there for me... I really miss your class as it was the first that really inspired me with my love for science and veterinary medicine. I missed you greatly when I went off to high school and still think of you to this day even as I enter into my senior year this fall. Since I graduated in 2013 from Saint Catherine's, I have carried out research with Fox Chase Cancer Research Center's Teen Research Internship Program (TRIP) for which only 16 students got selected and recently just participated in a veterinary summer program with University of Pennsylvania for which only 15 students nationwide got selected. The curiosity your class provided me has reminded me to always keep asking thought-provoking questions. I feel so blessed by God to have had you in my life and everyday am reminded of your love and compassion you embraced me with in your class. Thank you for always being there for me and inspiring me to reach for my dreams.

Thank you, parents, as always, for your wonderful support.  Thank you to all who were able to complete our 1st Quarter Parent Survey - your feedback is invaluable!  It is a joy and honor to serve you and your families.  Let us continue to lift each other up in prayer - let us ask our Lord to bless our desire to serve Him, His children, and His Church.

God bless you,
Sister Mary Jacinta, O.P.
Principal

Thank you for your prayers for a new guidance counselor for SCS.  We are happy to share with you that we have hired a certified counselor who also has teaching experience.  Her name is Stephanie Broach.  November 21 is the tentative first day of work for Ms. Broach.

    Christmas Shop Next Week

A Small World Gift Shop is coming to SCS 11/14-11/17.  Students will have the opportunity to preview items on Monday (no items will be sold on this day).  This will allow students to get a sense of how to budget their money.  Most gifts are priced under $5.00.

    "Bookaneer" Book Fair Upd ate

Thanks again to all you amazing, generous patrons of books and reading, our   Fall Book Fair was a super success! Through the program All for Books, we 'shared our treasure' to buy books for Christ Child Society of Atlanta. Volunteers from this organization support the reading and language of the students at St. Peter Claver Regional Catholic School. We were also able to buy books for our parish charity- The Giving Tree. Scholastic Book Fairs in turn will match our contribution by giving the same amount in books to Kids in Distressed Situations, National Center for Family Literacy and Toys for Tots. Your generous act of kindness will bring more knowledge, more adventure, more humor, more mystery, and more imagination to many children. Thank you.

Funds raised from the Fair will go toward stocking the Media Center with resources for our students whose reading prowess never ceases to delight and amaze all of us. We hope to update technology for the media center too. We made $3000 as profit this year, and we thank you. This is an affirmation of your support of reading and our readers.

Grateful thanks to all you wonderful parent volunteers who helped set up the Fair, run it and close it down-it would not have been possible without you. Your time and talent so generously given is much appreciated. A special shout-out to Mrs. Montello, Mrs. Van Zant, Mrs. Biroschik, Mrs. O'Shields, Mrs. Gunawan, Mrs. Rohling, Mrs. Taylor, Mrs. Nevle and Mrs. Thomas. God bless you all.

    Yankee Candle Fundraiser

We are very excited to partner with Yankee Candle Fundraising this Fall.  By offering premium from the world's #1 candle brand we're hoping to reach our fundraising goals and present our supporters with products they actually use and want.

    Fun Run Proceeds

We are pleased to announce the specific ways which our Fun Run proceeds are benefiting our students this year!
    • Every teacher received $150 towards curricular items for their classroom: $3,700
    • Students in K-5th will participate in two STEM in-school field trips by ClubSciKidz this year.  One will be at the beginning of December and the other will be in February/March: $4,600
    • The remaining proceeds will be used to supplement the cost for our new security system and surveillance cameras.  We are close to completing the process of choosing from among three bidders.  The installation of the system and cameras will take place during the Christmas holiday.  The total cost of the project will be around $30,000.  In addition to our Fun Run proceeds, we will use some of our Capital Reserves funds to pay for this project.
    New Home & School Committee

We are pleased to announce a new Home and School Association Committee: St. Theresa Ministry will offer assistance to families that may need special support, for example, sickness of a family member, the birth of a new baby, etc.  This committee assist families by gathering and coordinating meals, arranging carpool support, etc. for families.  A big "thank you" goes to Mrs. Rachel Wartes for chairing this committee.  Mrs. Wartes will be assisted by Mrs. Anderson and Mrs. Garcia, our HSA co-chairs.   To request assistance from this committee, please contact Mrs. Wartes at [email protected]

Please know that high school shadow days are "excused" absences.  Please simply email your child's teachers and Mrs. Mirsajedin at our front office to notify us.   Thank you.

    Faith & Culture Connections

Looking for a fun and faith-filled way for your children to enjoy their Halloween treats?  One family shared its practice of having their children pray each day during November for souls in purgatory before enjoying a piece of their Halloween candies.  On some days, the children actually choose to give up their daily candies in order to offer an extra sacrifice!  The candies can be stored in a simple box labeled "Ora Pro Nobis."  In addition, there is a Catholic mom's blog which offers information about souling (the origins of modern-day trick or treating) and a recipe for "soul cake."
    This Week's Basketball Highlights
The St. Catherine of Siena Blazer Basketball teams opened the 2016-17 CMLA season this past weekend. This season, we are fielding eleven (11) different teams in the program with approximately 110 students participating. We have five "Lady Blazer" Girls teams (3rd grade, 4th grade, 5th grade, 6th grade, and a 7th grade team). On the Boys side, we are fielding six teams (two 3rd grade teams, a 4th/5th grade team, two 6th grade teams, and a 7th grade team).

On Saturday, the SCS gym hosted seven different home games and we also had four of our teams playing on the road.

    Week # 1 Highlights include:

3rd Grade Boys (3B1) tipped off the season with an exciting 16-4 victory over Transfiguration in front of an enthusiastic home crowd. The boys played great defense and showed tremendous intensity in limiting their opponent to just two overall baskets.
3rd Grade Boys (3B2) showed much determination and teamwork in a narrow 11-8 loss to St. Brigid. Despite the outcome the boys demonstrated many positive things to build upon moving forward.
3rd Grade Girls played very hard and showed great team unity in a close 8-4 defensive battle with CTK. Look for the team to continue to improve and make big strides in their development.
4th Girls matched up with a tough SPC team and unfortunately fell just short in a four point loss. The team showed their trademark great defensive play and hustle throughout the game.
5th Grade Girls , who are the defending back-to-back CMLA  champions in their age group, opened the season with a very impressive 42-4 victory over IHM.  Our girls played well together and dominated every facet of the game on both ends of the court. Each girl on the team scored and our defensive pressure overwhelmed the opponent from the very beginning, taking a 12-0 lead just several minutes into the game.
5th Grade Boys  put together a ferocious 2nd half comeback (after being down 13 points at halftime) to even game in final minute. However, a potential game tying Blazer three-pointer in the final seconds just rimmed out, resulting in a 18-15 loss. Still, the team showed great determination and promise of things to come.
6th Grade Girls had a strong showing in a 13-8 opening victory over STM. In what was a intense and hard fought game, the  Blazers made some crucial defensive stops down the stretch and converted some big 4th quarter shots to claim the big win.
6th Grade Boys (6B1) had an exciting 37-31 road win over Christ the King. CTK took a commanding first half lead, however, the Blazers showed great determination and put together a rousing 4th quarter rally to take the lead. It was a great team win as each member made big contribution.
6th Grade Boys (6B2)   lost a close game on the road to SJN by the score of 24-20. The Blazers showed great hustle and were right there in a back and forth game before eventually  falling a couple baskets short.
7th Grade Girls had an impressive 24-6 opening win over St. Brigid. The girls controlled the tempo of the game throughout and all nine players contributed in the great team effort.
7th Grade Boys showed good effort but fell short in a tough opening game loss to SPC. Despite the final outcome, the boys showed some good things on the court and will continue to get better each week.
