Rosh Chodesh Assembly
We had an amazing Rosh Chodesh assembly which featured our Chanukah Play breakout! Students went hunting in their classrooms for Kippot and were then instructed to report to the gym. Each class had to figure out what the letters on the kippot spelled. Once it was all figured out, all the students in Kindergarten through Grade 9 lined up in a square spelling out "This year's Chanukah production is the "The Magic Yarmulke"
We then distributed Jewish Birthday packages to any student whose birthday is in Cheshvan. If your child's birthday is this month, they should have received the package. Please help them decorate the picture frame and fill out the card. They will have an opportunity to share the meaning of their name with the rest of the school and have their card and frame hang on the Birthday Bulletin board. Please return the frame and card to the office or Mrs. Greenwald before their Jewish birthday.

We concluded the assembly by singing the Akiva Anthem together. Thank you Morah Miller for all your hard work in planning this event as well as the entire Chanukah play production.

Chanukah Play
All students from Nursery through Grade 9 will be participating in the Chanukah Play which will be on Thursday December 15th at 6 PM. Please let the office know if your child(ren) will be away during that time.
Akiva Academy Used Book Fair!
Everyone is coming together to celebrate literacy at Akiva. We will be holding a used book fair on Wednesday, November 16th. We invite everyone to join us and browse around. Your support of this event will go toward helping us obtain new books and resources for our library and classrooms.
Don't forget to mark the Used Book Fair date on your calendar! We look forward to seeing you during our Book Fair and thank you, in advance, for supporting this great literary fundraiser.

Donating Used Books
If you or your children decide that you want to donate your gently used books and magazines, please drop them off at the School office. Mr. Hadden will store the books and magazines until the big event. Please keep this in mind as you are fall cleaning. The grade three students will help sort the materials along with some parent volunteers. Used Book Fair volunteers are needed to help sort, price, and sell books. If you are interested, please contact the Mr. Hadden.
Each child is invited to visit the book fair with their class during the day of Wednesday, November 16th.
Pre-School and Daycare Dance Class!
We are pleased to announce that Mrs. Julianna Enciu will be offering a dance class to our children. The class will take place on Fridays from 11:25-11:55 in the gym.

Pre-School students are welcome to join for a fee of $50 for the 10 sessions. Please register by filling out the daycare registration formand paying $50 in the office. Pickup for Pre-School students who participate will be at 11:55 on Fridays. There is no extra charge for full time daycare children.

The dates for the classes are in the School Calendar. Please subscribe to the calendar to keep updated on this as well as all school events.
Science Fair
Grade 5-9 students will be preparing for the school science fair in February and are eligible to enter the City Science Fair in April if they follow the proper procedures. The City Youth Science Fair will take place this year April 19-21 during Pesach Break.

In order to enter the City Science fair, students need to follow the requirements which include using a large trifold.

Mr. Virine who is our Parent Volunteer Coordinator has graciously donated the majority of the cost of the large size trifolds.

Students are required to pay $5 each for the trifolds which can now be purchased in the school office. Please send in $5 to purchase a large size trifold.

Online Curriculum Survey
Dear Colleagues,

Last week, Education Minister David Eggen and Premier Rachel Notley announced the launch of our online curriculum survey as part of our broad engagement to hear feedback from Albertans in every corner of the province. The survey can be accessed at  curriculumsurvey.alberta.ca , and will be available for everyone in the province  until November 18, 2016 .

I encourage you to help spread this survey to the teachers, parents, students, and community members within and around your school authority. We will use the robust and diverse viewpoints of Albertans to help inform our work to ensure students are "Future Ready." More information on curriculum development can be found on the  Alberta Education website .
