Taking Action to Protect Our Students' Data

Dear Teachers,

Student safety is a top priority in DPS, and a big part of that is protecting our kids' digital information and data.

In Aug. 2016, the state of Colorado passed a new law aimed at protecting student data. This law, which will go into full effect Dec. 31, outlines specific actions we as educators need to take to protect our students' data. Fortunately, we in DPS are already well on our way to fully complying with the law, thanks to our work on the Academic Technology Menu (ATM) , as well as efforts by our DoTS team to secure internal systems.

As part of this process, we have updated the district process by which schools obtain parent consent for sharing student data, and we've updated our student data privacy video. As a teacher, you have an important role in this work. To start, please watch this required video about student data privacy. This training will be tracked in Infor Lawson, and all DPS team members are required to have the training video completed by Oct. 31.

Additionally, e very teacher needs to input all of the various third-party tools, resources and applications that you plan to use in your classroom in th is "Staff Reporting Tool." From there, your principal will generate a parent consent letter to ensure your students' families know how their data is being shared. Please note: S tudent data cannot be shared with these third-party service providers until parents/guardians have provided their consent.

To recap next steps:
  • Ensure you watch the Student Data Privacy Video by Oct. 31.
  • Input the tools used in your classroom in the Staff Reporting Tool in the ATM.
  • Work with your school leadership to determine when parent/guardian consent has been provided.

For more information, visit this Using Online Tools -- For Teachers page . If you have questions, please reach out to our Student Data Privacy Officer Bryan Westerman. Thank you for doing your part to safeguard DPS student data and protect their privacy.

Warm regards,
Susana
This Week's Top 5 Things to Know
Submit Student Learning Objectives by Sept. 29
The deadline for teachers and Specialized Service Providers (SSP) to submit Student Learning Objectives (SLOs) using the SLO application is Friday, Sept. 29. Team members who have students twice a week or less have until Oct. 30. School leaders should approve SLOs by Oct. 30 (Nov. 17 for the adjusted deadline).

To support, the SLO Resource Bank has nearly 300 model SLOs. Models provide a list of assessments that could be used to determine students' baseline preparedness. DPS Assessment Strategy opt-in schools have additional resources available in Illuminate. These include Preparedness Reports (for math grades 1-10 and literacy grades 4-12) that use previous-year SLOs, state assessments and current-year assessment data to provide recommended preparedness levels for students.

For more information, visit the SLO website or contact [email protected].

2017 ACCESS Trajectory and Growth Data, Resources Available
The 2017 ACCESS Trajectory and Growth reports are now available in Illuminate, as well as support resources including Types of ACCESS Data and A Guide to the 2017 Trajectory. These one-pagers will help guide understanding of the changes to ACCESS scoring, 2017 trajectory calculation, and the Colorado Department of Education redesignation policy, and how that will impact services for English language learners.
