Health Savings Account Limits Change for 2017

Health Savings Accounts were established to allow individuals and families to save additional money from their paychecks before taxes to be used for medical expenses throughout the year. Health Savings Accounts can be used if an individual or family is enrolled in a Health Savings Account eligible medical plan.  It is a great idea for people who have enough regular expenses that they are able to calculate the approximate amount needed annually. The contribution amount was adjusted for inflation for 2017 by a modest additional $50 for self-only accounts.

Current Form I-9 Valid Until January 21, 2017

The Office of Management and Budget approved a revised Form I-9 on August 25, 2016. The new form will be published by United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) by November 22, 2016, but will not be effective until January 21, 2017. In the meantime, employers can continue using the current version (revision date of 03/08/2013 N).

Employer Marketplace Has Short, 90-Day Appeal Window

Employers may receive a notice from the Health Insurance Marketplace indicating they may need to pay a penalty, called the Employer Shared Responsibility Payment, because an employee requested and received a subsidy for health insurance. As an employer, you only have 90 days to appeal this notice, so you need to act quickly.

New York City Amends Mass Transit Benefit Rules

Starting this year, New York City businesses with 20 or more full-time employees who work in the city must offer their employees the option to use their pre-tax earnings to purchase certain transportation benefits. The Commuter Benefits Law, which passed in 2014, became effective on January 1, 2016. The law was recently amended to clarify recordkeeping requirements, enforcement provisions, and penalties that employers should pay attention to in order to avoid noncompliance fines.

A recent ruling by the Department of Labor (DOL) shows how crucial it is to ensure your company's overtime policy is compliant with State and Federal overtime laws and how costly it can be if they are not.

San Diego Sick Leave Law Updated

San Diego's Earned Sick Leave and Minimum Wage Ordinance was amended with the "Implementing Ordinance" amendment. This amendment adds additional requirements, and created a system where complaints can be reported and resolved. The new regulations went into effect on September 2 nd , 2016, so business owners should start to acquaint themselves with the new requirements.
