Ensemble Basiani

With repertoire spanning the 7th to 13th centuries, this 12-member, all-male group, a chapter of the Tbilisi Holy Trinity Cathedral Church choir, protects the rich and ancient heritage of folk and work songs, monastic chants, religious hymns, and epic ballads of the Republic of Georgia.  


 

Beethoven Masterworks

The PA Philharmonic presents "Beethoven Masterworks" on Friday, October 28th at 7:30pm at the Zoellner Arts Center. Performance highlights include: Beethoven's Symphony No. 7. Pianist Lura Johnson along with the Pennsylvania Philharmonic Chorus under the direction of Dr. William Wright brings the Choral Fantasy to life. The masterwork Egmont Overture opens the program with Michael Butterman, conductor.
   
 
The Pirates of Penzance

Swashbuckling balderdash is the order of the day in this hilarious, hopeful, high-seas comic opera by the great-granddaddies of modern musical theatre!  Meet Frederic, the dulcet-toned orphan pirate apprentice. He's a hopeless romantic who is eager to run off with his beloved, Mabel (whose father is the very model of a modern major-general), but - naturally - complications arise.



Devon Allman and Craig Thatcher & Friends

Devon Allman has toiled long and hard to establish his own musical identity, separate from his legendary dad, Gregg Allman. O ne can never leave a name as famous as "Allman" very far behind. There are traces of his father in his soulful voice and his uncle Duane in his innovative guitar playing. Thus as one Allman institution (The Allman Brothers Band) has "retired," Devon Allman is poised to grow his family's musical legacy.

At the Movies: 'The Beatles: Eight Days a Week - The Touring Years" is a must-see, not only for the British rock band's key fans, the Baby Boomers, but for music fans who weren't old enough to be there during the group's 1960s heyday. Director Ron Howard charts the portion of The Beatles' career from 1962-'66, from their gigs in the basement Cavern Club, Liverpool, England, to their final concert at Candlestick Park, San Francisco, in 1966.  Paul Willistein of the Lehigh Valley Press reviews the documentary  film.

In recognition of October as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Eleanor Bobrow discusses this important issue with two guests from Turning Point of Lehigh Valley, a domestic violence services and advocacy agency serving Lehigh and Northampton Counties. Turning Point's Executive Director Lori Swyensky and Medical & Community Outreach Advocate Kim Townsend share their perspectives on why this issue is important in the Lehigh Valley, how prevalent domestic abuse is in our community, the ways to recognize domestic violence when it occurs, and more.
