The "Missing" First Year of Infant Social-Emotional and Cognitive Development
The way parents and teachers interact with infants in the very first months of life can deeply affect a child's future development. Surprisingly, many parents don'trealize just how young children are when they can begin to feel complex emotions, and how deeply they are affected by their earliest experiences - referred to as the "Missing" First Year. Understanding what children are taking in and learning during daily interactions can help parents and teachers nurture a child's healthy development - including his or her language, thinking, and social-emotional skills. "TMI?" How open should parents and caregivers be about their past?
How much to reveal depends on their age and what kids ask. Caregivers want to give genuine answers to their children whenever such probing questions are asked. Still, several factors must be considered as to what information is shared with youth and what remains private without jeopardizing trust in the relationship.
