Don't Miss the 419 Planning Study 3-Day Design Workshop - Nov 14-16 |
|
The most popular words used to describe the 419 study area are "congested," "busy" and "dated."
That's what participants said in our latest survey, when asked to express the way they see the
study area now. In the future, they wanted the study area to become "exciting," "fun" and "modern."
|
How do we get from here to there?
|
Join us for a three-day-long workshop on November 14, 15 and 16. The Design Workshop is the most intensive community engagement event planned for the study! The planning team will present their research, brainstorm broad strategies and refine their proposals at the
Holiday Inn Tanglewood.
You are encouraged to attend no m
atter how much or little you've participated so far!
- Community Workshop | Monday, November 14, 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.
- Learn what the planning team has heard so far
- Share your reactions and ideas with other community members
CORTRAN and STAR service will be extended until 9 p.m. for Monday and Wednesday night's meetings.
|
Over the past two months, the planning team met with more than 300 residents and members of the business community, and conducted interviews with over 100 stakeholders from around the Valley.
A
short survey of participants taken at two October events found that 69 percent of participants would be interested in living in a more urban, town-center environment where they could safely walk/bike to stores, restaurants, entertainment, and green spaces. Survey participants also indicated that they would most support improved pedestrian crossing access and sidewalks in the study area.
Surveys and interactive learning materials are available online.

The Advancement Foundation Wins $70,000 Grant!
|
The Gauntlet:
Bigger & Better This Year
The Advancement Foundation has won a $70,000
Building Collaborative Communities Grant to help local
entrepreneurship flourish. They intend on using this grant as an additional resource to make the Gauntlet even bigger and better than it was last year. Last year there were over 20 participants and over $100,000 in prizes were awarded to local businesses. According to representatives from the Community Business Launch Program, last year the Gauntlet was the largest business plan contest of its kind in Virginia.
In previous years, the Gauntlet was limited to businesses in Vinton. This year, thanks to partnerships between Roanoke County, The Town of Vinton, Botetourt County, and The Advancement Foundation; the contest is a regional effort.
Announcements about the NEW Gauntlet are expected soon!
We'll keep you posted via Facebook, Twitter, newsletters and various media outlets!

Precision Fabrics Group has created a new fabric engineered at its Vinton plant that is used in bed sheets that are certified by the FDA as a medical device. DermaTherapy® bedding technology was specifically developed to create a new generation of healthcare bedding that reduces the overall occurrence of pressure ulcers. Its silk-like fibers help regulate the patient's "microclimate"-a combination of heat, moisture, pressure, friction, and shear.
