A Message from Religious School Principal, Lois Tompkins

On Sunday (September 25), I will hold a learning session for parents of kids in grades 2-6.  We'll meet in the library at 9:15.  I will be showing you how we use the OLC (Online Learning Center) and how you can utilize this fun learning tool at home.  I hope that you'll join me!

This week, thanks to some of our very busy and dedicated parents, we will begin to distribute Shabbat Boxes in grades K-5.  These boxes are a great way to celebrate Shabbat on Friday evening - your child will be excited to bring the box home, complete with all the necessities and even some special treats.  Thank you to Don Levinson, Naida Gould, and our Galinsky PTA.  If you would like to help put these boxes together on Fridays, please contact me, Don or Naida.  We'd appreciate the help!!

Thank you to the 5th and 6th grade parents and students who attended the Bar/Bat Mitzvah meeting last Sunday - we had a great turnout!

Have a great week!

Learning Tidbit of the Week
In a continuation of this month's hints of things that you can do to help raise "mensches" - our most important task:

It is "hip" right now to encourage people to practice "random acts of kindness."  Practice regular tzedakah and tikkun olam (Tzedakah is good things you do with your money; Tikkun Olam is actions which help to repair and redeem the world.)   You can:

(a) Make a ritual out of giving tzedakah before lighting the Shabbat candles every week.

(b) Learn about, adapt, and do, the unique Jewish tzedakah practice for each Jewish holiday.  For example: On Purim it is Matanot l'Evyyonim - gifts of food to the poor.

(c) Create the family "Tikkun Olam thing."  It could be weekly, monthly, or annually, but something which your family chooses to do.  I know some families that skip dinner once a week, where the "money" goes to feed others...Believe me, the needs are greater than the number of available families.   Your research and evaluation are part of this assignment.

One thing that tends to turn kids into mensches is participating in systematic acts of kindness.
