2017 Forest Lake Junior League by April Lynch
The 2017 Forest Lake Jr. Horseshoe league ended their Tuesday night league in August with a fun league tournament. It was followed by awards and a pizza party for all the kids and their parents. Congratulations goes to Sam McElhone who won the 6-week league without a loss and Linnea Lynch who came in 2
nd place. Congratulations also goes to Grace Barthel who won the Jr. Tournament by outlasting 13 other pitchers in the league.
This year we had 21 kids play on the Tuesday night league. The kids had a great time not only learning to play the game itself but learned how to have good friendly competition. This year Rick Wright, Myself and Joe Muelller ran the program. With the three of us having 25 years or more of horseshoe pitching experience, I believe we were able to show the juniors our passion for this sport and how much fun it can be!!
A special thank you to the Forest Lake Dairy Queen, Keys Restaurant, Verizon Wireless and Cherry's Ice Cream for their support with our Junior program.

Alexandria
Junior League

Last fall, after the State Tournament where we only had two cadets signed up to participate (Bruce Swenson's son and my grandson), Bruce approached me with his desire to get a junior league started in Alexandria and asked for my help. We decided to contact Lakes Area Recreation to see if they could assist us. We were able to get it advertised in their summer rec brochure that came out late winter/early spring. We were hoping for maybe a group of ten and got thirteen, so we were excited. They ranged in age from 6 to 15, 3 Juniors and 10 Cadets, 2 girls and 11 boys. We began on June 13th with some basic instruction and turned them loose on the courts. The next week we started to play 30 shoe games, count-all scoring and we kept stats. We recruited the help of other league members to keep score and several of the mom's also learned how to keep score. Later in the summer we increase to 40 shoe games so that everyone would have a minimum of 400 shoes and qualify as official league members. Nine of our members reached that goal by early August and we turned in our stats. On each of the next two weeks we ran round robin tournaments using cancellation scoring and handicaps, so they would be ready for tournaments. We finished on August 29th with a pizza party and awards. Ryan Boyer pitched the most shoes, 1020. Austen Hegg was our rookie of the year with the best new pitcher average of 6.17%. Marshal Swenson had Hi Game at 47 points and Hi Average of 33points. Tyler Stone had Hi Game Over Average. Three of our members earned their 10% patches, Austen Hegg, Jackson Hubbing and Landon Sullivan. Marshal got his 20% patch and Tyler received his 30% patch. Out first end-of-season tournament was won by Tyler, going 5-0, averaging 18.67%. The next week we had enough to have two classes with Landon winning Class B, 4 wins/0 losses, averaging 5.83%, and Marshal winning Class A, also going undefeated, averaging 11.67%. Ryan pitched in both Donnelly and the State Tournament. Most of these new pitchers thought they would come back next year, we hope they do and we also hope they bring some friends with. We felt this was a very successful start and we hope it grows from here.

Through The Eyes of a Ten Year Old's First State Tournament

What was the most exciting part of the State Tournament?
When I heard my name called for winning 2nd place!
Did anything at the tournament make you nervous or unsure about?
I was very nervous playing my last game because the boy I was playing was really good and scored a lot of points against me.
What was your favorite part of the weekend at the state tournament?
My favorite part was the junior party we had because we could play games and hang around with all the other kids.
How would you describe this sport and tournament to other kids that don't currently play?
I like that it is very fun but competitive too. I like watching my mom because she's a good role model and I can watch how and when she throws the horseshoe. Playing horseshoes is so much fun and I don't care if I win or not when I'm playing with my friends.
Did you show any of your friends your trophy or talk about the tournament after?
Yes, I brought my trophy into school for show and share. Horseshoes doesn't seem as popular of a sport with kids that I know. I was surprised that my class asked a lot of good questions and they seemed really into it, when I didn't think they would be. My teacher was interested too and mentioned how cool it would be to get horseshoes started at our school!

President's Message

Hey Everyone
Where has the summer gone? We just wrapped up another successful State Tournament and I hope everyone had a great time. Congratulations to all the class winners and to our new State Champion, Mark Smith!
We were blessed with a very nice summer day for our banquet held at the park. Congratulations to all the award winners and to Al Larson who was inducted into our Hall of Fame this year. (Good job Superman!)
Thank you to all the members who attended our annual meeting. As you are all aware, our membership is down. Maybe because people are busier in their personal lives or just wanting to take a break. Whatever the reason, MN Horseshoes is not dead. It is just in a little slump like the rest of the country. We just need to keep sharing our sport with people. If anyone has any suggestions for promoting, please contact me with your ideas. Together we can make MN Horseshoe strong again. We have a very hard working board and dedicated members.
As times are changing, we must make adjustments to our organization as well. In 1998 we had 1200 plus members and 9 VP's. We currently in 2017 are down to 680 members. It was proposed and passed to drop from 6 VP's to 2 VP's in Minnesota. Any clubs North of US HWY 94 may contact Janet Larson. Any clubs South of US HWY 94 may contact Robin Constance. Thank you both for stepping up and I look forward to working with you both.
Bonnie Holland had announced that she is stepping down from Sec/Treasurer after 14 years of service. Thank you Bonnie for your dedication and it was great working with you. You will be missed a lot. I have appointed Ann Hagman to the board to finish Bonnie's last year of her term and she accepted. Welcome and thank you for joining our team.
Thanks to Pine City Club and Forest Lake Club for hosting the State Tournament this year. I received a lot of positive feedback from our members.
Thanks to all the players who attended this year and I look forward to seeing you on the courts this winter.

Bonnie Holland
Hi all! I don't know if you all have heard the news....but I am resigning my position as Sec/Treas/Membership Director effective oct 1st. There are a lot of reasons for this move, but the main reason is that I am lost in the horseshoe world without my Jim.
I want to thank all of the Officers and Directors I've worked with over the past 14 years in this position. It has been a pleasure running this organization with such a fun group of people. I feel blessed to have made so many friends and shared great times over the years.
Ann Hagman has been appointed to serve out the remainder of my term, which is the end of 2018. This position will be up for election at next year's annual state meeting in Genola. If you are qualified and motivated and would be interested in running for this position,
give me a call with any questions you might have.

North VP Janet Larson
I would like to give a shout out to Forest Lake and Pine City for doing a fantastic job with the state tournament, thank you! Congrats to all who participated in the State Tournament. By the time you get this, Hibbing will have hosted State Doubles, hopefully many of you were able to participate in that. My goal is to contact all of the leagues in my district over the next few months. I am passionate about this sport and all of you who participate in it. I want all of you to know that I want to do whatever I can to keep this a viable organization. I will admit however that I am not socially an extrovert, so I need the door to open both ways. Please feel free to reach out and get a hold of me also. The new size of this district is a little overwhelming. We have a lot of good stuff going on up here. Alexandria and Forest Lake both have Junior Leagues. Micah Snead introduced a number of young people to this sport on the first day of or state tournament, great job! I know Upsala, Becker and Isanti will be busy over the next 6-7 months hosting a number of tournaments for all of us. I believe they all have winter leagues also. Many of you head south for the winter, I hope your homes are still there after Harvey and Irma. As for the rest of you, hopefully I will get a chance to see you at a winter tournament.

On The Court with Josh
Greetings Everyone,
I would like to recap how this summer has went with the Season of Horseshoes here in Minnesota and Nationally with the World Tournament. We had 2 Minnesota Pitchers Win their respected Classes at the 2017 World Horseshoe Tournament in St. George, Utah. Congrats to Marlys Timm, Gary Boots, and Robin Constance! You all represented Minnesota Very Well and you all earned your Titles, some of you might not know this, but Robin was in a four-way tie for 1
st
and he had to play the other three guys to WIN and HE DID!
WE ALSO had 3 of our top pitchers represent Minnesota in the Women's,Senior Women's, and Senior Men's Championship Groups at World this year, Sara Otto was in the Women's group,Janet Larson in the Senior Women's, and Gary Boots in the Senior Mens.
Congrats to Sara,Janet, and Gary for pitching well and representing Minnesota. Congrats to everyone else that Placed in the Money and Trophies, we had a very good showing at the World Tournament this year that is for sure!
Next year is Florence, South Carolina which will be GREAT one that is for sure. Myrtle Beach is only 2 hours away from Florence, and is also one a destination to fly into if you decide to do that. AND for 2019 Wichita Falls, TX is next after Florence! MAKE sure you get your 4 tournaments in to qualify for World Next year, this winter will be full of perfect opportunities to get your events in. Upsala, Becker and Isanti will be having tournaments all winter long!

HELLO EVERYONE,
By the time you all are reading this the State Tournament and all the fun festivities have come and gone, along with the summer horseshoe season. We had a good summer of horseshoe pitching if you ask me. Tournament attendance was a little low in some of the tournaments, but it is what it is. I oversee keeping track of all the horseshoe tournaments that are pitched in Minnesota as the State Statistician, and out of all the pitchers that we have in our charter/members, we only had about 1/3 of our membership pitch in at least 1 tournament in the past 12 months, now some would say that is good, and some would say THAT'S ALL? I am encouraging EVERYONE to bring a friend to the next horseshoe tournament that you go to this coming year, granted some tournaments do have entry limits, but most tournaments in the summer time run 2 shifts, so there is plenty of spots for everyone that wants to pitch. LETS ALL do our part and increase not only our States Membership, but the Sports membership at a National Level as well. For those of you that didn't attend the membership meeting, we will have a due increase for the 2018 season, this decision was voted on and passed at the National Convention during the World Tournament in St. George, Utah. as I am writing this the increase is an additional $8, so Minnesota's State/Nation dues would be $38+ depending how the outcome of the membership meeting went during the State Tournament.

South VP Robin Constance
Well another successful horseshoe season has just about come to an end, and we had some new faces come forward to leave their mark on not only on their respective leagues but also on the State Tournament. In the championship Men`s class we had a 1
st time very popular winner with Mark Smith defeating Josh Olson in a playoff game. Mark had finished in the runner up position several years before to various different pitchers. Congratulations to not only Mark but to all the other pitchers in this class to make it very exciting.
In the Women's championship class we had a repeat winner in the form of Janet Larson and followed once again by Sara Otto. The rest of the class consisted of Minnie Fisher, who finished third and was a factor, Melissa Wimmer finishing fourth, Helen Hawkinson who finished fifth, followed by Kayla Yeager, Tina Bussey and Jennifer O`Neil who all made this a very competitive class and the future of women's horseshoe pitching at the State Championship level looks very bright !
In the Elders class Sig Armitage one again prevailed by going undefeated. 2
nd place went to Gene Eitreim and Third to Ray Volkers followed by another former championship winner in the person of Bill Danielson.
Among other things which happened at this State tournament was the retirement of long time Secretary/Treasurer Bonnie Holland. Bonnie will be greatly missed by all who attend the State tournaments, not only the other officers by also by all the spectators who are used to seeing her smile and we are certainly used to her organization.
Two weeks after the State tournament was hosted by The Forest Lake and Pine City clubs who did a great job, the Hibbing club hosted the State doubles Tournament. I did attend and was very impressed by all the work done by the Hibbing Horseshoe Club and the Pierce Family. Great Work.

Back in 2000, when I was first appointed as News Media Director, MGSHPA had 1130 adult members and 111 juniors and around 32 sanctioned clubs. We had the largest membership in the USA. Our NHPA had 13,000 members at that time. In 2017, when I was once again appointed as News Media Director, MGSHPA has 638 adult members and 51 juniors and 25 sanctioned clubs. Our NHPA has around 9,700 total members and around 300 sanctioned leagues.
Each one of us needs to help grow our membership once again by inviting neighbors, co-workers, bowling friends, classmates and church friends. Offer them free membership into your club so that their only cost would be the $38.00 state sanction fee. It takes each and every one of us to recruit new members if we want to see organized horseshoe continue on in the future.

World Tournament News
At this year's annual convention, there were two NHPA VP positions being
contested. Congratulations to our own Rob Hagman as 4th VP,
and Laurie Lampkin (KY) as 2nd VP. Dave Sidles ran unopposed for Sec/Treas,
my thanks to him.
Also, the NHPA adult membership dues were raised by $8. This increase was
easily passed by the delegates. The 2018 Worlds will be held in Florence, SC and the dates are July 9th - July 21st. Florence is a short drive from the ocean,
Myrtle Beach.
This year's world tournament in St George was a very successful
event for our MN pitchers. MN sent 51 participants. An amazing 43% of our
pitchers were "in the money", with 7 winning trophies (Janet Larson 2).
Janet has compiled the results of all MN pitchers, thank you to Janet !

Rockford River Days Tourney by Marlys Timm
Rockford Ringers held their 19th annual tourney under beautiful sunny skies at Riverside Park on Saturday August 12.
Bob Knudtson has held a hot hand lately which continued as he captured first place following a four way tie and with Frank Johnson taking second in Class A.
Marlys Timm held home field advantage going 4-1 to take Class B with Ben LaCoursiere taking second.
Lori York took Class C honors pitching nearly 5% over her average going 4-1 with Jeff Lawrence taking second.
Daryl Littell claimed first in Class D entering at 13% and averaging 21% with 4 wins and a tie with Mike Timm, who claimed the second spot, both first time pitchers.
Lori Klein went undefeated in Class E followed closely by fellow Ringers Tyler Condon and Tyler Lazenby,
Tourney Director Joe Mueller finalized stats and awarded prizes just in time for the delicious pork chop dinner at Riverside Park.

BERTHA HORSESHOE CLUB

This year we had 10 pitchers, no new people but we had a very competitive group of guys that is for sure. We had a few guys move up to 30 feet this year, and would you believe that by moving up their game would improve? WELL it Did! Frank Dandl went from averaging a little over 5% last year, and when he got to move up this year his average jumped up to around 18%! Frank received Most Improved this year in League. Josh Olson had the high ringer percentage overall for the year with 62.55%. Henry Greenwaldt our local PIT Master won the Regular Season with 30.5 wins and 9.5 losses for the season, he had a 55.33% for the year as well. Josh was the runner up for the league followed by Paul Olson in 3rd and Frank Dandl taking 4th Place.
We then took a break during the World Tournament, we had 1 league member pitch, Josh Olson who pitched in Men's A-2 group, and he finished 5th in his class. Then it came time to have our league Play-OFFS, we decided to pitch against everyone 1 time through-out the next 3 weeks. The Final Standings for the Play-offs went as followed
1st- Josh Olson 8-1
2nd- Larry Brabec 6-3
3rd- Al Woida 5-4
3rd- Frank Dandl 5-4
3rd- Dave Striet 5-4
Something that we decided to do once in a while last year was we would go up to the local bar and have a drink or two as a group, we opened it up for everyone to join after league each night, we would go up and chat and have a few laughs every Tuesday night, we would play darts and even throw a little money on the table to make it a little more interesting sometimes.
WE ended the year off with a Cook-out at Franks which was FANTASTIC, the club provided the Steaks and frank was wanting to do the rest, and he did. He prepared corn on the cob, which he grows outside his home, potatoes, and all the fixings, along with a couple different deserts as well. IT WAS VERY GOOD!

Isanti Fall League announcement

For those of you pitching in the Isanti fall league we will begin pitching the week of October 16th. There will be three nights of play (Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday) starting at 6:30pm. Please confirm with me whether you are going to pitch or not so I can fill in any spots if need be. Contact info:

Mankato
Doubles

Montgomery Horseshoe Club held its doubles tourney Sept. 9th. The turnout was down from other years but the pitchers enjoyed five hours of tournament play. The first round had games to 31 points followed by class A and B double elimination playoffs. Three teams from the Mankato horseshoe club were the money winners.
Class A - first place Mike Creech and Kim Briard - second place Wayne Davis and Steve Miller
Class B - first place Lyndee Nohner and Clem Gilbertson.
Look for flyers and info in the Ringer Digest next summer for our 2018 tourney.
