A Message from the Superintendent
We have celebrated many successes this week in Lovejoy. The LHS Quiz Bowl team took the championship spot at Alamo City VI, and both LHS Cross Country and Volleyball brought home district titles. Golf, Orchestra, Basketball, and Lovejoy students participating in the NFL Punt, Pass, and Kick program are all in the news. Detailed information regarding these accomplishments and more follow in this edition of Email Express.
Lovejoy Invades Alamo City, Edges St. Stephen's for Title

. This past weekend, the LHS quiz bowl team traveled to San Antonio to participate in the Alamo City VI invitational. There were 19 teams from the San Antonio, Houston, and Austin areas, plus lone representatives from McAllen and DFW. The LHS team got off to a strong start with dominant wins over teams from Juan Diego and Keystone. Things then got rocky for the LHS quiz bowlers during the next two rounds as they lost hotly contested matches to St. Stephen's and Clark, each by just 10 points. The negative momentum culminated in a 3rd straight loss to Strake Jesuit in round 5. However, after a bye and some Domino's pizza for a pick-me-up, the team bounced back with a round 6 win over Brandeis Orange, to finish the prelims with a 3-3 record and a #9 seed. Only the top 12 teams made it to the single-elimination championship tournament.
For the LHS team, it all came together in the tournament. Things got rolling with a victory over Brandeis Navy (365-160) followed by an upset of the #1 seed Reagan HS (335-280). After that, it was time to exact revenge for the earlier 10 point defeats during prelims. LHS defeated Clark (375-255) in the semifinals and then bounced back from a 115-point deficit with six questions remaining to stun St. Stephens (315-295) in the championship match.
The quiz bowl team will be back in action on November 12 when Lovejoy hosts the 1st annual "Leopard Lair" invitational. As a reminder, matches are open to spectators.
The Lovejoy Cross Country teams competed in the UIL District 15-5A Championship, with the Varsity and JV Boys teams winning the District Title for the tenth year in a row. The Varsity and JV Girls team both claimed the District Runner-Up title behind Highland Park.
Carson Hockersmith (pictured below) led the way for the Lady Leopards, claiming the District 15-5A Individual title with a time of 20:10. The girls team won the Runner-Up title with 52 points. Highland Park won the girls division with 20 points, and Wylie East placed 3rd
with 89 points. Sofia Estes secured an All-District Honor, finishing 7th
overall in 20:50. Additional results include Emily Gueller (11th
- 21:01), Shaelyn Ballard (16th
- 21:13), Lacey Pelkowski (17th
- 21:13), Andee Richardson (18th
- 21:20), and Noelle Franz (21st
- 21:29). The Varsity Girls team qualified for the Regional Championship for the 10th
year in a row.
Grant Tiff (pictured below) led the way for the Varsity Boys team winning the District 15-5A Individual title with a time of 16:04. Tiff placed 5th
at last year's UIL State XC Meet, and is looking to earn another top 5 spot again this year. The Varsity Boys team won the District Championship for the tenth year in a row with a total of 26 points. Highland Park finished 2nd
with 58 points, and Mesquite Poteet finished 3rd
with 59 points. The Varsity Boys finish also qualifies the Boys team for the Regional championship for the tenth year in a row. Lovejoy Boys had a total of five runners who placed in the top ten earning all-district honors. Brady Laboret placed 3rd
overall with a time of 16:26, Brett Pedersen placed 4th
overall with a time of 16:27, Bradley Davis placed 8th
overall with a time of 16:46, and Ryan Spruell placed 10th
overall with a time of 16:53. Rounding out the boys team were Ryan Brands (11th
- 16:57) and Nate Hartter (17th
- 17:30).

The Lady Leopards Volleyball secured a District Championship last night with a 3-0 win over Royse City. Callie Holden and Bailey Downing led the team with 18 kills, followed by Haley Deschenes with 8 kills.
The LHS Volleyball team has an overall record of 36-7, with a 13-1 victory in District 15-5A. The team will head in to the playoffs next week with the Bi-District match-up of Lovejoy vs Longview Pinetree, scheduled for Tuesday, November 1st at 6:00 PM at Wills Point High School, 1800 W. South Commerce, Wills Point, Texas.

Congratulations to the LHS Varsity 2 ladies golf team. They recently won the tournament held at Sherrill Park Golf Course. It was extremely windy, and the course was very wet due to the rains that morning. The ladies shot a total 399 to take 1st place. Sophie Starnes shot her best tournament score of 94 that day. Jazmine Veatch shot 99. Kendall Sailer and Callie Mayfield each shot 103. Freshman Alyssa Paranteu shot 105. Highland Park shot 437 for 2nd place. Lake Highland shot 454 for 3rd place.
Congratulations to the members of the Lovejoy orchestra program 6th - 12th grades who competed at the TMEA Region 25 All Region Orchestra Auditions. They competed against students from McKinney, Allen, Rockwall, and Sherman school districts. There were over 700 students auditioning for spots in the All Region orchestra. Dear Lovejoy Community:
As a Pre-AP for all district, we believe students have the skills and support needed to be successful in Advanced Placement (AP) classes. Lovejoy ISD encourages all students to take at least one AP exam while in high school. Although Lovejoy students are not required to take AP courses (which are college level courses taught in high school), we strive to achieve excellence by requiring all students who choose to enroll in an AP course to take the corresponding exam. Most students in Lovejoy embrace this opportunity, taking more than one AP course.
We attain tremendous academic honors because of the talented and hard-working students you send us each day combined with the dedication of our excellent teachers and your fantastic partnership.
In May 2016, 826 students completed AP exams. Collectively, students took 1,699 AP exams. Lovejoy High School students continue to demonstrate academic excellence and success on the AP exams. Each year the College Board designates students as AP Scholars in recognition of their performance on AP exams. In 2015 LHS had 182 AP Scholars with this number increasing to 254 students based on the 2016 AP test results.
In addition to recognition from the College Board, Lovejoy High School will recognize these students at a school-wide pep rally in the fall, and at a banquet in January.

Running Over Depression 5K & 1K Fun Run: October 29
Register now for the first ever Running Over Depression 5K/1K at Lovejoy High School. This event is an Eagle Scout project for Bradley Davis, a Junior at Lovejoy High School. The Dallas Morning News published a great article regarding this project. Please

The run follows a certified course, and awards will be given out to top 3 overall and age group finishers. Bibs purchased by all 5K runners contain chips which will accurately time your race and provide immediate results. You may either sign up online, at packet pickup, or on race day. Entry fee is $30 for 5K, and $20 for 1K. All preregistered runners are guaranteed a t-shirt. . Money raised from entry fees will be donated to the American Foundation of Suicide Prevention (AFSP) after costs have been covered. 5th - 8th Grade Basketball Tournament: October 29
Senior Project
For his Senior Project, Ethan Kerry is hosting a basketball tournament on Saturday, October 29th at LHS.
The tournament is open to all 5th through 8th grade boys. The tourney will begin at 8:00 AM and end between 2:00 and 4:00 PM
, depending on registrations. This 3-on-3 tournament may consist of either 3 or 4 people per team. This is a "bring your own basketball" tournament. The entry fee is $20 per team, with the money being donated to a college scholarship in Ethan's grandfather's name. Please contact Ethan at 214.385.7184

Lovejoy High School has arranged for an e-waste recycling day on Saturday, October 29th from 9 AM - Noon in the LHS parking lot. It is the perfect time to start gathering electronic items you would like to dispose of. Please click

Rudolph Run: December 3/ School Registration Deadline: November 1
The Rudolph Run is one of Allen's most exciting holiday 5Ks, and takes place on Main Street in downtown Allen. The event begins with a non-competitive, one-mile run, and concludes with the USATF-registered 5K Rudolph Run. Chip timing is used to determine race results of participants. Also, there is an overall male/female Master's division for 50+ winners. This is a family-friendly event open to all ages and skill levels.
You may help a Lovejoy PE department earn money by registering through the Rudolph Run's "School Registration Only" page. For each registration, $5.00 will be donated to the Lovejoy campus of your choice.

Rocket Build Party: November 2; Rocket Launch: November 6
3....2....1.... Blast Off.... It's ROCKET LAUNCH TIME!
The Lovejoy Gifted Association and the Dallas Area Rocket Society (DARS) will be sponsoring the ROCKET PROJECT again this year due to the overwhelming success of last year's event! The Rocket Project is an extracurricular STEM activity at which your child builds a rocket one evening, then launches it another day -- all with the assistance of the professionals from DARS. Where: SCIS cafeteria
When: Wednesday, November 2nd from 6:00 - 7:30 PM
Who: Skill level geared toward 3rd - 6th graders, but all ages are welcome with an adult.
Launch: Sunday, November 6th at LHS -- time TBD*
Cost: $12 for LGA members and $22 for nonmembers.
*Parental supervision is required at both the Build and Launch events.
STAR PARTY: November 7
Puster Elementary, along with the Texas Astronomical Society, will host a star party on November 7th. Viewing will begin at 6:00 PM, and end at approximately 9:00 PM. Join us as we explore the stars, moon, planets, the Andromeda Galaxy, and many exciting objects in the Milky Way. Parking will be available in the front lot. You may enter through the front doors where signs will direct you to the courtyard and back parking lot where viewing will take place. Access to the back parking lot will not be available via the driveway. The Puster PTA will provide hot chocolate. In the event the skies are overcast on the 7th, a back-up date of November 11th is planned.

Revisiting Diversity: More than a Buzzword: November 17
You see it sprinkled in college catalogs, corporate mission statements, and in employee training seminars: Diversity. A New York Times piece recently made the claim that the ubiquitous word has all but lost its meaning. This lecture, presented by Dr. Salena Brody, will revisit what diversity really means for our schools, workplaces, and communities, focusing on social science research from the past half century.

Dr. Salena Brody is a professor of Psychology at Collin College. She earned her doctorate in Social Psychology at the University of California, Santa Cruz, studying intergroup contact and attitude change. Her research focuses on identifying the conditions under which contact between groups leads to prejudice reduction and other positive outcomes. She is a Phi Beta Kappa member and has received numerous teaching awards including being named the 2016-2017 Outstanding Professor of the Year at Collin College. She is a proud Lovejoy parent and active member of the community, serving on the Friends of Fairview Fire Board of Directors.
