Dear Jones Family,

Practice SAT / National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test - October 19

On Wednesday, October 19, Jones Juniors will be taking the PSAT/NMSQT, one of the most important practice tests available for college admissions. In addition to serving as excellent practice for the SAT, the PSAT/NMSQT is the entry point for Juniors to qualify for the prestigious National Merit Scholarship Program, sponsored by the College Board. I had the privilege of serving on the National Advisory Board for the National Merit program for a number of years and got to see first hand the impact the program can have for students in the college admissions process.

Looking head, Juniors will take the full SAT at school in April. All current Freshmen and Sophomores will take a version of the PSAT later in the spring as practice for their junior year PSAT and SAT. These practice exams provide valuable data for the school and for each individual student to use in being better prepared for the SAT and college admissions in general.

Thank you for your continued efforts to support of our students and our school.  As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at any time at  773-534-8606  or  pjpowers@cps.edu.

Many thanks.

GIRLS VARSITY VOLLEYBALL ADVANCES TO CITY FINAL

Jones Girls Varsity Volleyball (pictured above) beat Northside Prep to advance to the city finals against Whitney Young on Friday. The JV squad also advanced to the city finals, and also faced Young.

Senior Night will take place on October 19 at home, honoring the six senior on the Varsity squad as they take on Morgan Park.

BOYS GOLF TAKES SECOND IN CITY TOURNEY

The Payton Jones Varsity Boys Golf Team (pictured above) wrapped up a successful season.

The team won Second Place at the CPS Chicago City Golf Championship -- qualifying as a team for Regionals -- with Jones' Patrick Mattar, '19, posting a 71, the 3rd highest individual score of the day.

The Varsity Boys Golf Team went on place 4th in their Illinois Golf Regional on October 4, with four team members qualifying to compete as individuals in the IHSA Sectionals at Glencoe Golf Club, including Jones's Jack Quinn '17 (co-captain) and Patrick Mattar '19.  The Payton Jones JV Boys Golf team went undefeated in their competitions.

Leading the golf team this year was new Head Coach David Gilmer, a Jones faculty member in the English Department.  Congratulations on a great season!

UNDEFEATED JONES BOYS SOCCER BOOSTED TO HIGHER DIVISION

The Eagles achieved a clean sheet during regular season play this year -- MEANING THEY WERE UNDEFEATED AND HAD NO GOALS WERE SCORED AGAINST THEM -- and earned a well-deserved promotion to a higher division within CPS next year.

Coach Espinoza has high praise for his players: "I am very proud of the progress everyone is making. All are working very hard and it is good to see all of hat work coming together. The work, resilience ad tenacity that every player is giving ismoving he rogram in a very positive direction."

2016 PepsiCo Showdown
The Jones Boys Varsity Soccer Team (pictured above) made an excellent showing at this year's PepsiCo Showdown, the largest high school soccer tournament in the country.

On Saturday 9/10, the Eagles lost to second seeded Oswego but demonstrated their ability to play strong possession soccer. On Tuesday 9/13, Jones upset Lakvie High School in a nail-biting shootout. Goalkeeper Leo Weldon made the winning save-blocking a hard grounder to the far left corner. Final Score 1-1 (5-4).

Soccer Senior Night
This year, the soccer program honored its graduating seniors (pictured above) on Friday, September 30th following an extremely well-attended evening game against Latin. Although the Eagles fell to the Romans 1-0, the boys demonstrated their strong connection to each other on and off the field that night.

The team will miss their seniors:
Emmanuel Acheampong
Kian Fayz
Antonio Frutos
Carlos Gonzalez
Andres Hernandez
Harrison Hicks
Karl Jennerjahn
Elias Kuhns
Francisco Leon
Fernando Ortiz
Josh Osemwengie
Ethan Soderna
Dylan Turner

JONES SOCCER & URBAN INITIATIVES DAY OF SERVICE

Jones Varsity Girls and Boys Soccer teams (pictured above) came together to lead a soccer skills clinic and a series of outdoor games on their home field on October 7. Approximately 40 elementary students from the National Teacher Academy participated. Following the clinic the athletes all shared a snack together while discussing healthy food habits and the meaning of the word "commitment" with the students.

Both soccer teams were also on the field again to cheer on their friends, the NTA elementary team, in their soccer match against Ward elementary on October 13.

For further information on the Jones Boys Soccer Program, please contact Varsity Coach Juan Espinoza ( jespinoza@cps.edu) , Junior Varsity Coach Paul Zubb ( pzubb@cps.edu) or Jones Athletic Director Frank Griseto (fvgriseto@cps.edu).

GO EAGLES!

Annual Fund Funds Shakespeare at School

You, FOJ Donors, Make a Difference.

Because of contributions to the FOJ Annual Fund, the English Department is able to bring the

Chicago Shakespeare Theater production of

"Romeo & Juliet"

to Jones to be performed for all 9th graders later this year.

This goes along with their reading of the play in class.

THANK YOU.

Help fund enrichment programs like this Shakespeare production from a Tony-Award-winning theater company through the
ANNUAL FUND.

The 2016/17 Annual Fund is underway.

Through the Annual Fund, Friends of Jones raises money to bridge the gap between what CPS budgets for the school, and what it really takes to run a top-level school like Jones.

That means funding the purchase of computers, sponsoring Freshman Connection, paying for our athletes and musicians to travel and so much more.

Please click the link below to make your donation today or to learn more about the Annual Fund:

Thank you!

 Fall Play

Monsters coming to JCP Theatre !

Don't miss the JCP Fall Play, the action -packed comedy She Kills Monsters. A comedic romp into the world of fantasy role-playing games, She Kills Monsters tells the story of Agnes Evans, a teacher, after the death of her teenage sister, Tilly.

When Agnes finds Tilly's Dungeons & Dragons notebook, she stumbles into a journey of discovery and action-packed adventure in the imaginary world that was Tilly's refuge. In this high-octane dramatic comedy laden with homicidal fairires, nasty ogres, and 90s pop culture, acclaimed young playwright Qui Nguyen offers a heart-pounding homage to the geek and warrior within us all.

The smash-hit She Kills Monsters is currently the most popular, most-produced play in America! See why this hilarious look at high school life (and the "monsters" all students encounter) is such a glowing success. It will play for four performances only:
Thursday November 3 at 7pm
Saturday November 5 at 2pm and 7pm
Wednesday November 9 at 5pm after school

Please note there is no school nor performance on Friday, November 4.

Tickets are $8 in advance (available before school and during lunch periods from cast members) and $10 at the door.

She Kills Monsters is rated PG-13 and parents are cautioned that some material may not be suitable for children under 13. Though a comedy, the play contains some mature language and subject matter as it deals with high school issues including sexual identity and violence.
