Ave Maria School of Law 2016 - 2017 Dean's Delegates

Dear Friends,

I want to congratulate all of our students who have successfully made it through the mid-term period this semester. We're proud of you and your hard work.

Last month I shared the exciting news about our law library being renamed the "Veterans Memorial Law Library." We are very grateful to a group of founders who have pledged their support to make this dream come true.

I sincerely hope you will join me for the official dedication of the law library on December 7, Pearl Harbor Day. We are planning a very special celebration for the Ave Law community to honor our nation's heroes.

I also invite you to consider participating in our Veterans Memorial Wall of Honor that will be prominently placed on the entry hall of the library. On this wall the names of our nation's fallen heroes, veterans, and those currently serving in the armed forces will be distinctly displayed as a lasting legacy. By pledging your support, you can be a part of this lasting tribute to honor a loved one. More information can be found in this month's newsletter.

My thanks to the entire Ave Law Community, and to you, for making each day at Ave Law a blessing.

Ave Law is a  Military Friendly Campus
Last month we shared the exciting news about our law library being renamed the "Veterans Memorial Library." I wanted to share other opportunities that are currently available or will soon be available to our military families.

Veterans Scholarships: Ave Law is an approved institution to provide training to students who are eligible to receive Veterans Educational Benefits through the Post 9/11 GI Bill and the Yellow Ribbon Program. For more information on scholarships, please contact the Admissions office at (239) 687-5420 or [email protected].

Veterans Law Clinic: A proposed clinic will give our students the opportunity to help veterans with much needed assistance to secure disability benefits and other consumer legal issues provided pro bono.

Veterans Memorial Law Library: Our law library will provide the legal research necessary to assist the Veterans Law Clinic.

Veterans Resource Center and Veterans Advocate:
A dedicated Veterans Advocate will be available to coordinate the special needs of our Veteran law students and their spouses and to assist with their transition from military life to pursing their law degree. A Veterans Resource Center will provide information on community services, housing, and the opportunity for socialization for veterans and their families.

Gregory T. Holtz Estate Planning and General Practice Clinic
Professor Greg Holtz with his family and Monsignor Frank McGrath
On October 7, we held a Mass and Dedication Ceremony in honor of Professor Gregory Holtz thanking him for his contributions to the school. The Estate Planning and General Practice Clinic is now named the "Gregory T. Holtz Estate Planning and General Practice Clinic." Professor Holtz was joined by his wife, brother and son, myself, Monsignor McGrath and staff members, along with some of his students. Thank you, Professor Holtz, for all that you do for the Ave Law Community.
SPOTLIGHT ON: JOSE LINARES
Jose Linares '19 graduated from the University of Central Florida in 2012 where he studied Spanish, Criminal Justice, and Military Science. He did humanitarian work in Russia and traveled to Bogota, Colombia, and Mexico City for cultural immersion and studies. While in Mexico, he spent time at the U.S. Embassy and learned about counter-narcotics and counter-human-trafficking operations. He put his goals of being an attorney on hold to serve in the U.S. Army's 82nd Airborne Division, 1st Battalion 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment. Jose was deployed to Afghanistan in 2014, where he earned his Combat Infantryman's Badge.

"While deployed, I could see the love of God in the faces of the little village children who would smile and greet us as we patrolled through the valley to protect them and their families. Few people were defending the sanctity of their lives besides us."

"For me, it was in the eyes of those little children where God re-confirmed my desire to be a legal professional. I chose to matriculate at Ave Maria School of Law because I know she stands in firm defense of the sanctity of every human life, and true Justice always defends the weak and helpless ones - the little ones without a voice."

Jose moved to Naples this May so he could begin the 1L Summer-Start Program. "I performed well this summer, thanks to the quality of our professors. It has been all the more rewarding because of the Christian community here, namely the St. Thomas More Society and Lex Vitae Society members. Our Chaplain is an amazing counselor and steward. My wife and I are awaiting the birth of our first little girl, and we are blessed to be where our family and Faith can grow while I strive for success in the legal profession."
IN THE NEWS AND AROUND TOWN
Professor Brian Scarnecchia was asked to travel to Ghana as a representative and member of the Board of Directors of the International Society of Catholic Social Scientists (SCSS) to speak at a conference on "Environmental Protection: The Ghanaian Experience." It was hosted by the Ghana chapter of the SCSS and held in Accra, Ghana on September 23-24. His lecture on "Legal Principles Applicable to Human Ecology and Nature" was well received. The Metropolitan Archbishop of Accra, Most Reverand Charles Gabriel Palmer-Buckle, asked for our continued support of his efforts to address environmental degradation and a culture of corruption in Ghana and West Africa. Professor Scarnecchia was so well received that he's been asked to assist in future conferences for all of West Africa on morality and law.
Professor Scott Daniels invited students from his class to attend Oral Arguments from 2nd DCA judges on October 14. The judges spoke with the students in a small Q&A session afterwards in the Judges' conference room. It was an honor for Professor Daniels and the students to be invited to a discussion outside of the courtroom. Typically judges would address the students in the court, but they were enjoying the group conversation which continued on. Congratulations to Professor Daniels and his class.

I am pleased to announce that Paula Johnson has been promoted to the tile of Administrative Services Coordinator. In addition to continuing to support Finance and Facilities, she will also provide assistance to the Dean's Office. Please join me in congratulating her on this expanded role serving our school.

On Thursday, October 20, the Immigration Law Society hosted an event on campus and invited Immigration attorney Casey Wolff, Esq. as the special guest speaker. He and our Director of the Law Library and Assistant Professor of Law, Ulysses Jaen, discussed the importance and intricacies of a career path in Immigration Law.
