Witt to discuss practical applications of unmanned aircraft in Manhattan

Trevor Witt, unmanned aircraft systems data analyst and flight instructor in the Applied Aviation Research Center, will give a public lecture at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 21, in 231 Ackert Hall on the Manhattan Campus.

Riding a wave of technological advances and sometimes oversold capabilities, unmanned aircraft systems are now becoming widely implemented throughout the world. The seminar will highlight promising applications of UAS, while maintaining a realistic view toward this technology's power to improve the world around us.

This talk is being presented for students participating in the capstone course of the natural resources and environmental sciences secondary major and is open to the general public as part of the NRES Seminar Series.  The natural resources and environmental sciences secondary major and its seminar series are generously supported by the Office of the Provost, College of Agriculture, College of Arts and Sciences, and the biological and agricultural engineering department.

University's emergency notification system to be tested Sept. 27
K-State Alerts will test the university's emergency notification system at
1:20 p.m. Wednesday,  Sept. 27 , in conjunction with the National Emergency Alert System test. The test includes text messaging and automated phone calls for those who have signed up for K-State Alerts.

The test also will include notifications on the university's home page, email messages, Twitter and Facebook posts, alert beacons in various buildings on campus and the tornado sirens. The wall-mounted alert beacons will emit a loud siren, flash strobe lights and provide digital scrolling text for two minutes. They can't be turned off during the test.

K-State Alerts is the university's primary messaging system for timely emergency notifications. The university uses K-State Alerts when a dangerous condition exists on any of the three campuses, such as an active shooter, tornado, snow day or other dangerous weather that may close campus or to inform about the reopening a campus following a forced closure.

Professor from Japanese university visits K-State Polytechnic, presents in business classes

Students in two of associate professor Greg Stephens' classes were treated to a guest lecturer last week when a teacher from Osaka City University visited the Polytechnic Campus.

Charles Weathers, a professor in the Graduate School of Economics at the Japanese university, presented on Sept. 13 in Stephens' Supervisory Management and Introduction to Business classes. Afterwards, he took a tour of the mechanical engineering technology, professional pilot, aviation maintenance management and UAS program spaces.

Before arriving on campus,  Weathers was  hosting a panel discussion in  Lisbon, Portugal,  during the International Conference of the European Association for Japanese Studies.

Weathers  has spoken to K-State Polytechnic students in previous years, focusing on Japanese employment and business  issues.

A high-five is one of the most recognizable ways two people can share excitement or celebrate a job well done. Kansas State Polytechnic's CEO and Dean Verna Fitzsimmons awards her high-five each week to honor faculty, staff and students for their dedication to the university.

Thank you to Adam Gabay for his dedication to the Polytechnic Campus!

I would like to send senior electrician Adam Gabay a high-five this week for his work ethic around the Polytechnic Campus. Adam takes initiative in his position, being cognizant of things that need to be completed even before work requests are submitted. He also is concerned with each customer being satisfied with the finished product and that all needs have been met with each job. His co-workers say he goes out of his way to be helpful to everyone, has a great attitude and is well liked around the campus. Thank you, Adam, for being such a shining example of the Wildcat way!
