Student Spotlight
Charles and David Deltz are Energy sophomores as well as Eagle Scouts! As Eagle Scouts, these high-achieving brothers actively work to better the community around them. Recently, David Deltz removed invasive plant species and planted native plant species at the Bellaire Nature Discovery Center. Also, Charles Deltz made a state compliance pathway for handicap purpose made out of decomposed granite at the Bellaire Nature Discovery Center. We value these students and their contributions to our community here at Energy.
Teacher Spotlight
This week, Energy High shines the spotlight on Ms. Alicia Mein, the AP Biology and Environmental Science teacher. Ms. Mein studied Biology and Speech Communication at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas. Before coming to E.I.H.S, Ms. Mein worked for the Nature Conservancy of Texas, in addition to her twelve years of teaching. She aspires to make her lessons inquiry-based and applicable to the real world, with an over-arching goal of making science fun for her students. She gathers inspiration from Ninja - her pet tortoise - who reminds her that slow and steady wins the race, and that simplicity is key. Outside of class, she is no stranger to running marathons, stating that a 10-mile run is short for her. Don't be afraid to stop by her class and say "hello", she welcomes the opportunity.
STUPENDOUS STAFF: Ms. Andrews would like to recognize Ms. Olga. She is always willing to help whether it's setting up tables or cleaning up spills. She is an amazing person and Energy is lucky to have her.
INCREDIBLE INSTRUCTOR: Ms. Ratliff would like to acknowledge Mr. McMillan for developing The Model UN Game for the freshman to introduce politics and international relations.
OUTSTANDING OFFICE: Ms. Ramirez would like to give a high five to Mrs. Mayhew for helping in the office and for just being an amazing person. Thank You!
NEW TEACHER HIGH-FIVE: Mrs. Alexander would like to give a big high five to Ms. Myers. As a brand new teacher, she is very creative, supportive, and encouraging of her students. She is always willing to try new activities in class and she's truly embraced PBL. She is a wonderful addition to the Energy Institute faculty. Keep up the good work!

COHORT CONGRATS: The Circuit Breaker cohort teachers would like to acknowledge Chase Carraway. Despite injuring himself by dancing after scoring a home run in kickball, he has contributed immensely to his cohort by participating in the Local Sun solar field trip and in the Model United Nations simulation.

Make it a great day for someone else by publicly acknowledging a member of Energy.

CAMPUS FEEDBACK FROM LAST WEEK

How to Choose a College
By: Chance Bednorz

With the due date for applications coming up for our Energy seniors, the pressure is on to choose which colleges to apply to. But how do you go about choosing a college? Below is a list of tips, tricks, and resources to help anybody (especially the upperclassmen) pick the university or college that is perfect for them.

1. Consider the c ost:  When looking at higher educational facilities, cost is one of the most important factors. Analyze your financial situation and talk with your dean or the college counselor about what you can pay, and other ways to get money for education.

2. Consider the location:  Do you want to stay close at home to be with your family? Do you want to leave Texas and never look back? Location is another huge factor that should really shape your decision for school. Find out how far you are willing to go for school, be it Houston, Texas, or in the United States.

3. What do you want from the college?  Not everyone can afford to be a full-time college student, so consider a college that allows you to work most of the week or suits your needs. Most important of all, VISIT THE CAMPUS. If it is an option, visiting the campus is highly recommended as it allows you to truly see how you might fit into that college environment.

4. What do you want to major in?   If your know that STEM is your life, love, and one true passion, consider more schools with specialties in that field. If you aren't quite sure what you want to do with the rest of your life, don't sweat it. Instead, find a university that offers many majors in a plethora of studies so that when it comes to deciding your major,  you have options.

5. Keep your eyes on the size:  Colleges can have student populations ranging upward of 50,000 students, with class sizes numbering in the hundreds. On the flip side , they can also have less than 2,000 students where classes never surpass 20. The point is, you need to decide if you want a university with a high student population or not.
