Changing  Season Triggers Critical Inspection Points

 

If your building relies on gas furnaces for heat, you could be placing occupants at risk by not performing essential fall inspections on your HVAC equipment.  Even a small hole or crack in a unit's heat exchanger could lead to noxious indoor air quality, and is enough reason to immediately disable the system (American Gas Association).

 

The heat exchanger is the heart of a gas furnace system, and unless you have a trained professional performing a thorough testing and inspection, you cannot know the true condition of the system.  But if left unaddressed, your entire heating system could fail, leading to even more costly repairs or replacement.  And if conditions are just right, a cracked heat exchanger could lead carbon monoxide into the building.  Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas that can cause headaches, nausea, shortness of breath, and loss of consciousness.

 

But heat exchangers may not be the only culprit.  Broken flues, insufficient combustion air, or open air ducts near furnaces can also cause a buildup of carbon monoxide in buildings.  The bottom line is, it is critical that building owners have a qualified expert perform thorough and proactive testing, inspection, and maintenance to catch these issues before they cause damage to your building or harm to others.
