A rain delay? At AT&T Park? In early September? Yep! It happened on Monday night, Sept. 11, against the Los Angeles Dodgers. After a 45-minute rain delay, the tarp was removed for a 7:55 p.m. start. Five pitches in, the game was further delayed until 10:50 p.m. The Giants would eventually defeat the Dodgers, 8-6, extending the Dodgers loss streak to 11 games. Photo by Ed Jay. |

San Francisco 49ers v. Seattle Seahawks
|
The San Francisco 49ers traveled to CenturyLink Field on Sunday to face the Seattle Seahawks, a team they had not beaten in six previous visits to Seattle. The end results were not any different this time, but the team's play was inspired as they lost a tense, hard-fought game, 12-6, in which only one touchdown was scored. While their current record is 0-2, clearly the team is rebounding from prior losing seasons. Above, 49ers running back Carlos Hyde broke loose for a career-long 61-yard run before being tackled on the Seahawks 22, leading to a 49ers field goal. Photo by Michael Zagaris. |

San Francisco Giants Update
San Francisco Giants Update:
For what was another tough week for the San Francisco Giants, at least it ended on a high note Sunday afternoon. Before the game, the organization honored pitcher Ryan Vogelsong, as he threw out the first pitch to officially retire as a Giant. Vogelsong was a World Series champion with the Giants in 2012 and 2014 and was an All-Star in 2011, after being drafted by the team in 1998. The good vibes continued at AT&T Park as the Giants ended a four game losing streak, defeating the Arizona Diamondbacks behind a quality start from Chris Stratton. The rest of the week wasn't as positive, however, as San Francisco dropped two out of three to the Los Angeles Dodgers before losing the first two games to the D-backs. With two weeks remaining in the season, the Giants are sitting at 93 losses, and a winning percentage below .400. The team will have to win at least five of the eleven games left to avoid their first 100-loss season since 1985. This week the Giants will finish their homestand against the Colorado Rockies before heading south to face the Dodgers.

Oakland A's
|
The A's shortstop Marcus Semien played a major role in Oakland's 9-8 win over Houston on Friday evening, Sept. 8. Not only did Semien hit a grand slam in the seventh inning but he saved the best for last by scoring the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning, ending the dramatic contest over the first-place Astros. The victory celebration engulfed A's second baseman Jed Lowrie, who delivered a single in the bottom of the ninth inning and plated Semien with the walk-off, winning run. To view a full photo album, visit our Facebook Page and be sure to LIKE us.

Oakland Athletics Update:
It was an up-and-down week for the Athletics, who alternated wins and losses on their road trip to Boston and Philadelphia. After ending their win streak on Tuesday, Oakland rebounded on Wednesday, defeating the Red Sox, 7-3, in an effort led by Jharel Cotton and Jed Lowrie. Though the A's dropped the rubber match, they were able to take two out of three in Philly, resulting in a split of their six games on the road. The A's showed off their power in the City of Brotherly Love, launching seven home runs, including three from first baseman Matt Olson. Before Sunday's game, the Athletics were fifth in the Majors in home runs, and had five players with 20 or more dingers. Unfortunately Oakland also ranked 23rd in team batting average while having the third-most strikeouts. This week the A's head to Detroit before returning home for divisional play against the Texas Rangers.

Simon Pagenaud raises his GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma winner's trophy after beating Josef Newgarden to the finish line by 1.0986 seconds, to win the 85-lap race at Sonoma Raceway. It was the Frenchman's 11th career victory and second straight on the 2.385-mile, 12-turn permanent road course. A year ago, Pagenaud won from the pole position at Sonoma to sew up his first championship. This concluded the 2017 Verizon IndyCar Series season.

Rolex Big Boat Series
|
The Rolex Big Boat Series, hosted by the St. Francis Yacht Club, held court on San Francisco Bay over last week (Sept. 13-17) and the 53rd edition did not disappoint sailors or spectators, with 89 entries competing in numerous classes. Above is Swiftsure, a Schumacher 54. This was Swiftsure's 36th Rolex Big Boat Series and the crew sailed with particular heart, as their skipper, Sy Kleinman, passed away earlier in the week, at the age of 96. Swiftsure was currently winning its division, ORR-A, with just one race to go. In 2015 they won ORR-B. Photo by Ed Jay.
|
|
|
Racing conditions were ideal on Saturday, according to Jenn Lancaster, race director at St. Francis Yacht Club. "We started with a moderate breeze that filled in as the day progressed, allowing us to get off two great races that challenged crews' sailing ability as well as endurance, especially later in the afternoon. After six races, the leaders consolidated their positions going into tomorrow (Sunday), which is their final chance to improve their standings." Above is Bad Pak, one of five Pac52s racing in this year's Rolex Big Boat Series. The first Pac52 was launched in 2016 and this was the first time a whole fleet of Pac52s had been on a single starting line. Bad Pak was sitting solidly in second and will probably end in second place as the first-place Team Beau Geste currently has a "picket fence" (meaning all first place finishes). Photo by Ed Jay. |

How Technology Is Changing the Business of Sports
BUS 172 -- Quarter: Fall; On-campus course; Sept. 26-Oct. 31, Drop Deadline: Oct. 9; Tuition: $450; Status: Open; Day(s): Tuesdays; Duration: 6 weeks; Time: 7 p.m. -- 8:50 p.m.; Unit: 1; Instructor: Andy Dolich
Like all businesses, the sports world is adapting to satisfy the new demands of customers (while expecting increases in profitability, of course). Most of the evolution in the sports world is being spearheaded by technological advances. These changes are powerfully modifying the interaction between the sports provider and the sports consumer. The range of change is multidimensional, creating new entrepreneurial opportunities and unique business models.
This course will bring into the classroom industry experts who will discuss how newer technologies are embedded in, and driving, these developments, including (1) "wiring" of arenas and stadiums of the future to enhance the fan experience; (2) analytics and metrics impacting not only athlete selection and performance, but also the knowledge level of fans; (3) management challenges of building a global fan base that permits expansions across the world; (4) virtual-reality spectatorship for those not at the actual event; (5) new interactive opportunities for fan engagement; and (6) emergence of esports (new franchises and leagues). Each session will include an extensive question-and-answer session to cover entrepreneurial ideas related to the week's topics.
Scheduled participating speakers include:
* Jamie Zaninovich, Deputy Commissioner/Chief Operating Officer, Pac 12 Conference
* Sally Ann Reiss,Founder and CEO, PlayyOn
* David Koppett, Vice President of Content Strategy, NBC Sports Bay Area
* Bill Schlough, Senior Vice President & CIO, San Francisco Giants
* Tracy Hughes, Founder and CEO, Silicon Valley Sports Ventures
Andy Dolich is the instructor. He has held executive positions in the NFL, NBA, MLB and NHL.

Cleveland Spiders, 1887-1899 |
|
|
The Cleveland Indians had the country watching and cheering as they ran off a modern baseball record of 22 straight wins. As historians like to say, The Past is Prologue, so I looked into the past and, lo and behold, we have the tangled web of the Cleveland Spiders who played in the National League from 1887-1899.
Talk about streaks. In 1899 they lost 24 in a row in the midst of the worst baseball season ever, going 20-134. They were just a mere 84 games behind the pennant-winning Brooklyn Superbas and 35 games behind the next-to-last place Washington Senators. Ouch!
Their 101 road losses is a major-league record which will never be threatened. The team's longest winning streak of the season was two games.
In an ironic twist of fate, the Cleveland Spiders were owned by Frank Robison. Seventy-six years later the Cleveland Indians named Frank Robinson the first African American manager in baseball history.
In the midst of all these streaks of Cleveland baseball, how about some of the saddest losing streaks in sports?
NFL
-- Tampa Bay Buccaneers -- 26
NBA -- Philadelphia 76ers -- 28
MLB Modern -- Philadelphia Phillies --23
NHL -- San Jose Sharks, Washington Capitals --17
College Football -- Northwestern -- 34
College Basketball, D-1 Men --Towson State -- 41
MLB Pitchers - Anthony Young -- 27
How about some losing streaks of a local kind?
San Francisco 49ers
-- 10
Oakland Raiders -- 16
San Francisco Giants -- 10
Oakland Athletics -- 14
San Jose Sharks -- 17
Kansas City/Sacramento Kings -- 15 consecutive losing seasons
And I almost forgot, the Caltech Beavers men's hoop team lost 207 in a row.
Can't wait to see if the Golden State Warriors can go 82-0 this season.
Andy Dolich, President, Dolich Consulting -- Andy Dolich has held executive positions in the NFL (San Francisco 49ers), NBA (Memphis Grizzlies, Golden State Warriors, Philadelphia 76ers), MLB (Oakland A's),NHL (Washington Capitals) Pro Soccer and Lacrosse. He is the Entrepreneur in Residence at Menlo College and teaches sports business at
Stanford's School of Continuing Studies.
