Canoeing workshop creates excitement and connection around Kinnickinnic River
Sixteenth Street's Department of Environmental Health hosted a summer series of free environmental workshops on the changes happening in the Kinnickinnic (KK) River neighborhood. These family friendly workshops helped residents better understand the impact of the neighborhood changes and how they can use these new spaces.  Residents learned through hands-on activities such as fishing, biking, canoeing and outdoor science! Many of these were first time experiences for residents. For example, residents were overwhelmingly excited about the canoeing workshop, as not one of them had been on a canoe or out on the river before. Young participants commented, "this is better than watching TV," while another exclaimed, "this is the best day of my life!" Experiential learning is one of the best ways for residents to build a connection to our community and our KK River.
H ealthy Choices family and adult nutrition education classes work towards lowering obesity rate in community

As an obesity prevention and intervention department, Sixteenth  Street's Healthy Choices aims to target obesity both at an individual and a community level. Through innovative programming in the clinic and out in the community, Healthy Choices aims to educate and mobilize community members around healthy eating habits, physical activity and environmental improvement that fosters healthier individuals and communities. Programing includes a family nutrition education series, adult cooking and nutrition classes, Latinos por la Salud, a community advocacy group that leads walking, biking and community events and the Healthy Latino School Initiative, which influences food and nutrition policy and education in 5 partnering schools.
In the last year, more than 225 families participated in cooking and nutrition classes at churches and schools and more than 300 children in the partnering schools received nutrition, cooking and gardening education and field trips to local farms.
A second provider team added at St. Anthony Schools clinics to meet demand
For the past two years, Sixteenth Street has operated in-school clinics at all five St. Anthony School locations. The goal is to break down barriers to care for kids and families, so kids stay healthy, in school and learning. Both students of St. Anthony and their families are able to be seen at the in-school clinics, making visits accessible, quick and convenient for all types of families. Due to an overwhelming positive response and increasing demand from students, families and St. Anthony, Sixteenth Street is adding a second provider team to be able to serve more people and offer additional services. Other future plans include adding a behavioral health provider and educational opportunities for parents around highly requested topics.

Now that I've started learning, I don't want to stop

" You really don't know what you don't know. When it comes to your health, I've realized learning and having all the information you need to be healthy is so important. That's why the Adult Nutrition and Cooking Education classes through Healthy Choices at Sixteenth Street made such a difference in my life. I thought I was doing most things right, and it turns out I had a lot to learn and was capable of a lot more than I thought.

I found out about the classes through a health fair and decided to try it out. I live quite far away and can never find classes offered in Spanish near me, so this was an opportunity I wanted to take advantage of. The classes were great. Our teacher, Delia, was great. The other women in my class were wonderful people. It was a fantastic experience all around...

But it is important to recognize what is happening and start taking steps to help our children live and grow into healthier lives. Your most trusted resource should be your pediatrician. They can first, help you know if your child is obese, and second, help you create a healthier environment for him or her to grown in. Here are some things you can keep in mind to make sure your child is getting what they need to stay healthy and either avoid or grow out of obesity.

Don't assume your child is overweight

Young children can have all sorts of different heights and weights and often have growth spirts at different times. Don't automatically assume your child is overweight. Make sure you talk to your doctor about his or her weight. They will be able to tell you if it is normal, or if obesity is an issue. .. CONTINUE READING
