Take Pride in the Economic Growth Fueled by Your Entrepreneurship & Innovation!

Dear ,

I n an interesting article in Entrepreneur.com (10/20/16) by Ed Sappin, CEO of Sappin Global Strategies, the author wrote about how entrepreneurs drive economic development.  He distinguished between "opportunity" entrepreneurs, who develop goods and services in response to market needs, and "necessity" entrepreneurs, who start businesses for lack of other options.  Although both contribute to economic growth, the author suggests that it is the "opportunity" entrepreneurs who play a greater role in a region's economic advancement.

Individuals who choose the entrepreneurial path, acccording to Sappin, provide employment opportunities and increase regional and international trade thereby strengthening regional transportation and infrastructure and contributing to the overall welfare of the population. New technologies promote efficiencies and require an educated population, and education increases workforce creativity and quality of life.  Sappin states that, "In essence, there is a positive feedback loop among innovation, entrepreneurship, and economic development...New and growing businesses represent the principal sources of job creation and innovative activity in an economy, two factors that generally result in the rising standards of living for all."   So, to all you budding entrepreneurs, take pride in your personal accomplishments as well as in your contributions to our overall economy & quality of life!

"6 Bad Habits You Must Break to Succeed"

Are you having trouble being successful? If so, it is important to try to ditch a bad habit and embrace a good one in its place. Sometimes "bad habits often go unnoticed, like a slow leak in a car tire." There are times when you are doing things that you don't realize are hurting you. If you can break these 6 bad habits, you can be on the road to a successful career:
  1. You're a perfectionist
    • "If you live in fear of doing a task wrong, you won't be able to begin."
    • This causes a lack of creativity and joy, causing the tasks to become longer and more difficult.
    • It is okay to start over and make corrections to your work.
  2. You're compulsively distracted
    • Surfing the Internet, answering phone calls, getting snacks and responding to a text message quickly while in the middle of something pulls you away from intense focus.
    • The simple fix to this: turn off your distractions, close the door, and focus for a set period of time allowing yourself to have breaks occasionally.
  3. You hit the snooze button
    • "Studies have proven that 15 minutes of extra snooze time in the morning won't help you feel less tired."
    • Get up when your alarm goes off and start your day with a healthy breakfast.
  4. You leave your most important work until later
    • You won't have the energy left to devote the right amount of effort to doing the tasks right by delaying them until later.
  5. You multitask
    • "Studies have shown that multitasking reduces the amount of short-term memory you retain from your task."
  6. You sit too long
    • Sitting for too long "puts strain on your lower back, shoulders and neck. It also reduces blood flow to the brain and lungs - the powerhouses you need to accomplish your best work in the moment and later on in your life."
It is important to not try to change all your bad habits at once as that can be very overwhelming. Focus on improving one small thing at a time and, before you know it, you'll establish habits that will help you be your best.

" The Model Chase: Figuring out the right business model means making a difference not making widgets"

Thomas Goetz explains that the model chase "is a race to prove that your beautiful vision can survive the hard heat of the market place." Goetz is the co-founder and CEO of Iodine, a digital health start up based in San Francisco. At first, the company wasn't  sure how they would get paid, but they knew they would have to build something that lots of people would want to use.

Goetz explained that the reason Iodine went with this approach was because the only people who will pay for health care are those who already pay most of the bill: insurers and self-insured employers. Iodine's plan was to build something so good that insurers and employers can't not pay them to give it to their employees.

Iodine soon found out that you can spend hours on spreadsheets trying to find a clear cost benefit for insurers and employers, but having a product that is actually useful does help you sell it.  Goetz warned that one shouldn't go with a business model that prevents a company from scaling as much as it intended or that doesn't complement the company's business strategy.

Quotable Quotes

"Failure is simply the opportunity to begin again, this time more intelligently...A business absolutely devoted to service will have only one worry about profits. They will be embarrassingly large."
- Henry Ford, founder Ford Motor Company

"We need to accept that we won't always make the right decisions, that we'll screw up royally sometimes--understanding that failure is not the opposite of success, it's part of success."
- Arianna Huffington, Co-founder of The Huffington Post

" Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover."
- Mark Twain, Writer

"If you can't fly then run, if you can't run then walk, if you can't walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward."
- Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Civil Rights Leader

"How do you tell if you're independent-minded enough to start a start up? If you'd bristle at the suggestion that you aren't, then you probably are."
