November Notes from Vicki Boeckman

Hello dear Portlanders!

I can hardly believe it is November already!  The colors were splendid up here in Seattle as I'm sure they were in Portland.  As autumn takes a serious hold with shorter, darker, wetter days we have more opportunities to shift our focus to indoor activities, which means more time to gather round the fire, or heater, or community meeting room at the local Kennedy School to jam with fellow music making buddies!

For our November session I've chosen a variety of music and styles that will range from the early baroque to our century. We'll start with a heartfelt Yiddish lament called Oy Dortn arranged with some additional variations added by Matthias Maute, then move on to a cool arrangement of a late renaissance/early baroque piece called "La Fugazza" by Giovanni Legrenzi. Keeping with the fugal form we will HAVE to play some Bach, because he was - simply put - master of the fugue.  We'll do a short, luscious Prelude and Fugue that uses all sizes of bass recorders, and end with a stunning 4 part Canzona (BWV588) originally for organ, which has some nice rhythmical challenges but is so very rewarding to play with many people on a part.  An evening of many moods and colors - in perfect harmony with autumn in the Pacific Northwest.

Recorder sizes from Soprano to Contra will be needed, and all sizes of viols or other stringed instruments are most welcome. Buzzies will not be needed for this session.

Looking forward to seeing you soon!

Vicki

Tom Turkey said, "Listen, there's news not routine

For our workshop in March, two thousand fourteen.

At Columbia Gorge Early Music Retreat.

There's surprises this time - especially sweet!

Vicki, the Neumans, Rotem and, yes, Paul,

Who is currently famous from Bangkok to Gaul.

We're not just enjoying the food, notes and rests,

But this year we're having some mystery guests!"

That crafty old turkey refused to reveal

The names of those slated to come and quadrille,

"You must sign up quickly before we can fill!

Our discount December the first is the deal!"

"Gadzooks," said the turkey, "I've just heard the news

There's only room left in the waiting list pews!"
