Metronet/MELSA Librarians Receive MLA Awards: Update
Here are additional awards given to Metronet/MELSA librarians.
  • Lars Steltzner Intellectual Freedom Award
    • Dawn Lyons, Media Specialist, District 196 mlalogo
  • The Minnesota Library Association Above & Beyond Award is given in recognition of a recent group or individual contribution significant to the Minnesota library community. The award can be given to up to three recipients per year. 2016 recipients are:
    • Kay Beaudrie, the Minneapolis Institute of Arts
    • Johnna Horton, Metropolitan State University
  • The MLA 125th Committee that planned the events & activities commemorating the 125th Anniversay of MLA was awarded the MLA President's Award. Two MELSA/Metronet members of the committee were not reported in Issue 20: 
    • Laura Hulscher, St. Catherine University (student)
    • Carrie Braaten, Anoka Public Library

  • Still time to register for the ELM Expo at Minnesota State University-Mankato. It is Sat Nov 5 from 9:30-3:30.
  • A limited number of scholarships are offered for persons with financial need to attend the Library Technology Conference. Anyone is welcome to apply. Special consideration will be given to applicants who live outside the 7-county Twin Cities metro area and applicants who have not attended the conference before. All scholarship applications must be received no later than Mon, Nov 14, 2016.
  • Metronet offers CE scholarships to staff in member libraries. Apply now for LibTech. Note that you can register for LibTech & then ask for scholarship. We know it is competitive to register! (No penalty from LibTech if you have to cancel your registration.)
  • If you missed the ESSA in Minnesota Workshop Oct 13 you can find the materials here.
  • Media Specialist & their allies (eg, all other libraries!) can register for the statewide ESSA Stakeholders meetings MDE has scheduled. Metro meeting is in Burnsville on Thu Nov 3, 6-7:30. See link above for more on ESSA.

  • Free, Online, Self-Paced Destiny Training Course (with PLN & CEU options) has been created from the face-to-face trainings provided through Northern Lights Library Network.  
  • The Library of Congress will bring teachers & education experts from across the nation together in its second annual online conference for educators. This free two-day event, Discover and Explore with Library of Congress Primary Sources,will be held Oct 25-26, from 4-8pm EDT & is open to K-12 educators from across all teaching disciplines. 
  • The Ezra Jack Keats Foundation is calling for proposals for its 2017 mini-grants. Approximately 60 grants of up to $500 each will be awarded to qualifying teachers and librarians at public schools &libraries in the US. The deadline for submissions is Mar 31, 2017.

  • Anne Ford, Editor-At-Large at American Libraries, is working on an article about library cats. If you know of any libraries in Minnesota that have resident cats, let her know at (773) gray cat in library 398-8636 or aford@ala.org.
  • Serendipity Films, maker of the film Free for All, a documentary about American public libraries, wants to see archival film footage of public libraries in action. They are especially interested in compelling footage from the 1920s-1970s that helps illustrate the history of this valuable American public institution. More information & submission form here.

  • AASL has released a summary report of the data collected as part of the evaluation and remodeling of its learning standards and program guidelines. The goal of the research was to assess attitudes and perceptions about the current products, including content and usability.
  • US National Archives has released a page of GIFs for use by all.
