Speaker announced: Professor Isobel Pollock-Hulf OBE  WES is pleased to announce our speaker for the 2017 Caroline Haslett Lecture (formerly the Prestige Lecture), Professor Isobel Pollock-Hulf. Isobel has been a chartered engineer for over 35 years, and has been an enthusiastic supporter of women in engineering, and the importance of engineering in general.

Isobel was the second female president of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and the first female Master of the Worshipful Company of Engineers. In 2014, Isobel was recognised with an OBE for services to mechanical engineering. 

Isobel's talk, "Measuring Success" will explore the importance of measurement, something we use every day, yet rarely think about.

Theme announced: Engineering to Change the World  New for 2017, the annual WES Student Conference: Engineering Inspiration will have a theme. This year's theme, Engineering to Change the World, highlights careers and opportunities in humanitarian engineering, and human-centric aspects of engineering, across disciplines. The conference will feature keynotes from some of the industry's leading experts, as well as an excellent programme of career development and personal skills workshops for students.

Bursaries - Now Accepting Applications!  WES offers bursary-funded places to students to attend the 2017 WES Student Conference: Engineering Inspiration with support from its sponsors. The bursary covers full conference fees and overnight bed & breakfast accommodation (if necessary) on Fri 24 November. It also provides a contribution of up to £50 towards travel. Women undergraduate students on mechanical engineering, manufacturing, design, chemical, computing, materials, electronic engineering or similar courses can apply.  Applications close on 9 October 2017.

WES has signed the Speaker Diversity Pledge and joins the Mayor of London and London leaders in promoting a more diverse, inclusive and representative sector. Representatives from WES will be celebrating the Pledge anniversary at the All-Network Celebration on 25 September at City Hall.

Dame Susan E Ion OBE FREng CEng has been awarded an Honorary Fellowship of The Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3). T he Honorary Fellowship acknowledges the significant contribution she has made to materials science and metallurgy. Read more here.

The Government Equalities Office would like to know more about the barriers to returning to work after time out for caring.

They would like to know more about the experiences of people who want to return to work, employers' experiences of recruiting these people and other evidence on the barriers that they face and the support available to them.

This call for evidence is for:

1. Those who have returned to work after time out caring for children or family
2. Those currently caring for children or family who would like to return to work
3. Employers
4. Organisations or individuals with knowledge of returners

Twig World are looking for passionate people working in the sciences to interview for a new series of student books on the Next Generation Science Standards. These interviews will seek to answer the kind of questions children ask like "what does a [structural engineer/conservationist/theoretical physicist, etc.] do?", "What tools do you use?", "What interested you in science?" etc.

As part of our commitment to developing inspiring and relevant resources, we want to ensure our approach fully supports equality, diversity and inclusion within the sciences. Therefore we would especially welcome contributions from a wide range of people to demonstrate that careers in science are achievable by all.

We will be conducting interviews by phone/Skype in September and October. Interviews will take no longer than 30 minutes.
