WES Updates and Events
WES Awards

WES is seeking nominations for awards in two categories:
  • Amy Johnson Inspiration Award
  • Men as Allies Award
We are seeking nominations from those who have gone 'above and beyond' their work remit or role to improve diversity within engineering and applied sciences in general. The winners will be presented their award at the WES Caroline Haslett Lecture in London on 5 October 2017.

Amy Johnson Inspiration Award
The Amy Johnson Inspiration Award, launched in 2016, honours an individual who has made a truly remarkable achievement in furthering the diversity agenda within engineering and applied sciences. This award serves to recognise the efforts of an individual in inspiring more women to enter and/or remain in the engineering and technical professions. We welcome male nominees and those with no engineering qualifications. Download the nomination form here.

Men as Allies Award
With men holding the majority of roles within engineering and applied sciences, it is crucial that they are involved making the cultural changes needed to attract and retain women in engineering and applied sciences. The Men as Allies Award, new for 2017, seeks to celebrate a male engineer, or professional male working within the engineering, technical and applied sciences sectors, who has gone above and beyond the call of duty to support his female colleagues, and address the gender imbalance within engineering and applied sciences in general. Download the nomination form here.

Nomination forms must be submitted by 9am on Friday 22 September to Cath Heslop at [email protected]All nominees must be based in the UK. Self-nominations are welcome, but we do ask for a professional reference. The winner will be notified by 29 September 2017

Advice for new students and apprentices starting this year

Making lots of life and career related decisions, moving to a new town or city and having to make new friends and fend for yourself are some of the things that affect over half a million young people as they start their university course or apprenticeship each year. We know that whilst this is a very exciting time, a few words of wisdom might give you a little bit of extra help so here they are:
  • It's never too early to get involved and start shaping your career. The sooner you do it, the sooner you become an example and hopefully an inspiration to young girls who will hopefully be following us into the industry!
  • Branching out of your speciality is also vital, it gives you a better understanding of engineering in a wider sense and you become a better engineer because of it.
  • Having fantastic role models makes a massive difference.
  • Join as many groups and societies as you can, it's a great way of making friends and gaining experience.
  • Practical experience gained through non-academic activities will impress employers and give them a reason to employ you and not someone else with the same education.
  • If you're struggling, talk to your peers about how they're finding the course/apprenticeship, you might not be alone.
  • Don't be afraid to ask for help if you need it.
  • At university? Check if there is a WES affiliated student group, and if so, join it.
  • Finally - HAVE FUN!
You'll find lots of useful careers advice on the WES website including advice on engineering placements, job applications and interview tips.

C EE Conversation Series: Are the Disciplines Dead?

3 October 2017 18.00 - 20.00
UCL Centre for Engineering Education, UCL

Complex problems don't respect disciplinary boundaries - so why do the traditional engineering disciplines, some of which were formed over 150 years ago, still remain the common operation unit across much of higher education? As many areas of industry are increasingly looking for a broader skill set and expecting their graduates to work across multiple areas, can our current structures still provide the education required for our graduates to succeed in the latter half of the 21st Century?

Creating cultures where all engineers thrive

The Royal Academy of Engineering calls for profession-wide culture change and regular benchmarking of progress in order to create a truly inclusive culture within the UK engineering profession. The initiative follows the publication of a unique survey of workplace cultures, which shows that inclusion benefits all engineers, but there are some discrepancies between experiences of inclusiveness at work.
Creating cultures where all engineers thrive
Creating cultures where all engineers thrive [video]
According to the survey, the first to measure workplace culture in engineering, UK engineers are described by their own peers as good at problem solving, safety-conscious, proud, loyal, team-oriented and flexible. However, many engineers describe their culture as friendly but impersonal, with a strong attachment to tradition and offering too little support in relation to career development.

Results of this survey were published in the September 2017 report: Creating cultures where all engineers thrive

Next Generation Science Standards

Twig World are looking for passionate people working in the sciences to interview for a new series of student books on the Next Generation Science Standards. These interviews will seek to answer the kind of questions children ask like "what does a [structural engineer/conservationist/theoretical physicist, etc.] do?", "What tools do you use?", "What interested you in science?" etc.

As part of our commitment to developing inspiring and relevant resources, we want to ensure our approach fully supports equality, diversity and inclusion within the sciences. Therefore we would especially welcome contributions from a wide range of people to demonstrate that careers in science are achievable by all.

We will be conducting interviews by phone/Skype in September and October. Interviews will take no longer than 30 minutes.

If any of your members have interesting research or a passion for their field that they would like to share with us, please get in touch with Andrea Dansie [email protected]  by Friday 13th October  with the name(s), job title(s) and contact details of those who would like to volunteer for this exciting project.
