Employee Spotlight
Every month, the AHA Insider showcases one of our employees. We want to give our readers an insight as to who works for AHA and what they do for the association.

Leslie Lockard

Having graduated from Colorado State University with a General Agricultural/Industry Management degree, I knew I wanted to find something in the field that involved my passion for horses. I was visiting with my mentor, Gary Carpenter, who was working with the Arabian Horse Trust at the time and he informed me of an open position with the International Arabian Horse Association (IAHA). I was able to obtain a position within the Half-Arabian/Anglo-Arabian Registries Department. From there I moved to the Sweepstakes and Futurities Department and moved up in position from Lead Processor to Supervisor and then to Manager. When IAHA and the Arabian Horse Registry merged I decided to stay on and was eventually promoted to the position of Senior Director of Competitions. So, right about now most of you are thinking, she's kind of up there in years of service. Doing the math, if Gary was at the Trust and she lasted through the merger, the year is 2017, the answer must be 31 years of service!

Along the way in my career with IAHA/AHA, I had two wonderful children. My first child, Paige Lockard, whom many of you may know, is currently working in as the National Distance Ride Coordinator & Events Assistant here at AHA. Paige also shares my passion for horses. For Paige's eleventh birthday I was able to surprise her with an Arabian mare. Because of our shared passion for horses, I became a Horse Leader in the 4-H Program. In addition, I hoped that she might listen to me more as the Horse Leader versus a parent when I gave her riding instructions. Anyone who tells their child, "head up and heels down" repeatedly as a parent knows this frustration. When a leader or trainer says those exact same words, it becomes gospel!

From there I moved up to the 4-H Organizational Leader and it is at that time that my son, Stephen, showed his interest in horses. Stephen started participating in the 4-H Horse Program as well, and eventually took up horse judging. I then discovered what a great chauffeur I was for the Larimer County Horse Judging Team. One of Stephen's Horse Judging coaches, Kim Nettleton, now works for AHA in Registry Services.  What a small world!

My son and I also love football and I have watched him grow as a player from fourth grade all the way through high school. I miss watching him under the "Friday Night Lights" now that he has graduated.  He has gone off to college to play football for Rocky Mountain College.

My other passion is dogs, and by accident, I found out that Pat Thompson (in the Judge's and Stewards Office at AHA) and I share a love for the Borzoi breed. Before Pat was working for AHA I ran into her at a dog show. I had visited with Pat previously at horse shows around Colorado and all of a sudden here she is standing at the Borzoi ring.  We started talking about why we were watching this particular ring when we realized that we were both watching the same breeder from Texas. It turns out we each had gotten a dog from this same person in McKinney, Texas.  Another small world moment!

There are several ride opportunities at the Distance Horse National Championships. Starting on October 6 will be the AHA Competitive Trail Ride (CTR) National Championship, AHA Open CTR, American Endurance Ride Conference (AERC) Open Limited Distance, and 50 Mile rides.

Offered on October 7 will be the AHA 50 Mile National Championship, Appaloosa National Championship Endurance Ride, Paso Fino National Championship Endurance Ride, AERC Open Limited Distance, and 50 Mile rides.

On October 8 will be the AHA 100 Mile National Championship, AERC Open Limited Distance, 50 Mile and 100 Mile rides.

All Open CTR, 50 Mile, 100 Mile and Open Limited Distance rides are open to ALL BREEDS and are recognized by both AHA and AERC.

If you have an AHA Sweepstakes Breeding entry, you are eligible to compete for prize money at the AHA Distance Nationals. A total of $3,000 in prize money will be available. $1,000 in prize money ($350 to the Champion, $250 to Reserve, and $50 to Top Ten) will be offered in each of the combined 50 Mile Championship, combined 100 Mile Championship, and combined Competitive Trail Ride Championship. The prize money is awarded based on the 50 percent rule, meaning that if there are a total of 10 horses in the Combined Championships (Arabian and Half-Arabian/Anglo-Arabian) then only the top five horses will be eligible for prize money.

Thank you to our current 2017 Distance Horse National Championship Sponsors!

The Distance Horse National Championships (DHNC), including the AHA Distance Nationals, would not be possible without our sponsors! Our sponsors receive great exposure through Eblast's, DHNC Program, links posted on the AHA website, and other industry advertisements. The great thing about being a sponsor with the DHNC is your increased industry exposure due to our efforts of partnering with outside breeds, like the Appaloosa Horse Club and the Paso Fino Horse Association. We are still growing and hope to add to other organizations next year!

Now is the time to show your support for Distance Riding. Please click here to fill out a sponsorship form and add your region, club, business or farm to the growing list of sponsors for this national, multi-breed event.

AHYA Board Scholarship Program

The Arabian Horse Youth Association (AHYA) is working to find a new way to encourage  youth to participate on the AHYA Board of Directors. At Convention it was discussed to fund a scholarship program for those individuals that are serving on the board. The idea behind the scholarships is to encourage the youth to participate and have an active role in AHYA, as well as develop them as future leaders.

With the right funding, we would like to award a $1,000 scholarship to each Regional Director. We are hoping to start the scholarship fund with $22,000. So far we have raised $14,700. Please consider your region donating to this scholarship fund. We would like you to join us in providing opportunities to reward those outstanding youth members who are the future of our breed.

To donate email Brenna Whitlock.
