Upcoming Events
for Tennessee Valley Wild Ones Members

Woody Plant
Propagation Workshop
with Vernon Bush
at the Huntsville Botanical Gardens
Saturday, May 2, 8am - 3pm EST

Back by popular demand, Vernon Bush will conduct a plant propagation workshop at the Huntsville Botanical Gardens [Alabama].  The workshop will include hands-on techniques for rooting plants, especially woody plants such as native azaleas and other rhododendrons.  May is a good time of year to work with softwood cuttings.

The workshop registration fee is $20.00 per person and includes all materials for plant propagation -- fungicides, container, rooting mixture and softwood cuttings.  This is an incredible opportunity to learn from Vernon Bush, who is a master in propagating and growing azaleas and rhododendrons.  You will leave with plants for your garden.

The class is limited to 15 participants - Wild Ones members only. To sign up, email us to hold your reservation. Participants will pay the workshop fee to the Huntsville Botanical Gardens upon arrival on May 2.

Weather permitting, Wild Ones members may also use this opportunity to enjoy the beautiful native plant garden display of late spring wildflowers. Also, the Purdy Butterfly House at the Gardens will be opening on May 2. This beautiful, soaring 9,000 sq. ft. natural stone and steel beam structure overlooking the entrance pond is home to thousands of native butterflies, tadpoles, frogs, button quail, turtles and other critters. Waterfall, ponds, streams, lush vegetation and flowering plants invite visitors to experience this varied and colorful collection of flora and fauna.

All Wild Ones participants will receive free admission for the Huntsville Botanical Gardens.

Vernon Bush is a volunteer plantsman and rhododendron expert and currently involved with expanding the native plant gardens at Huntsville Botanical Garden.  He established and continues to volunteer at the Jackson County, Alabama Park and Arboretum near Scottsboro, AL.

This event is reserved for Wild Ones members and spouses/partners only.

Landscapes in Progress
Visit gardens of Tennessee Valley Wild Ones members
Saturday, May 16th

Many members of the Tennessee Valley Chapter of Wild Ones are gardeners who are working to replace exotic and invasive plants with native plants in their own landscapes. This is usually an ongoing process where we gradually learn about which native plants thrive in our specific environment and about how to control invasives.

So that we can learn from each other, twice each year the Chapter offers Landscapes in Progress programs.  These informal programs provide an opportunity to see the successes and challenges faced by other gardeners who are incorporating native plants into their landscapes.

These programs are not intended to be "garden tours" where everything is perfect, but rather a chance to share information about how to be better gardeners.  Over time, we may visit the same location to witness the evolution and growth of a landscape.

We hope that you'll come to this event to learn and to ask questions... but also to share information about your own experiences and to spend time with others who love native plant gardening.

This event is reserved for Wild Ones members only.

More information is coming soon.  Want more details?  Email us!

The Cullowhee Native Plant Conference
July 15-18
Cullowhee, North Carolina

The purpose of the Cullowhee Conference is to increase interest in and knowledge of propagating and preserving native southeastern plant species in the landscape. Past participants of the conference have included landscape architects, commercial nursery operators, garden club members, botanists, and horticulturists from state highway departments, universities, native plant societies, botanical gardens, and arboretums. Both professionals and laypersons will gain valuable knowledge from the informative fieldtrips, lectures and workshops.

The program schedule allows for informal sessions where participants can exchange ideas. We encourage you to make good use of this opportunity.

The conference is held at Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, North Carolina. Cullowhee is located between the Great Smoky and Blue Ridge mountains, approximately fifty miles west of Asheville. Close to both the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Cullowhee is in an ideal location for anyone with an interest in nature.
