Spring Native Plant Sale
Reflection Riding Arboretum & Nature Center

Make your plans now to attend the 28th Annual Native Plant Sale at Reflection Riding Arboretum & Nature Center.
For the best selection of plants, Reflection Riding members will have a special opportunity to purchase plants during a new Members-Only Pre-Sale event on Thursday, April 9, from 2 to 7 pm. Reflection Riding memberships can be purchased on site during the event.
The Plant Sale will be free and open to the public on Friday and Saturday, April 10 and 11, from 9 am to 4 pm.
More than 130 species of native plants, propagated at the Reflection Riding nursery, will be available. Experienced staff and expert volunteers will help visitors select plants and learn about the importance of using native plants to support wildlife and create a sense of place.
Special programming during the Friday and Saturday event includes author Ronald Lance who will show how to identify 20 different species of native hawthornes, and be available to sign his newest book. Each day there will be a discussion of Spring Ephemerals with Chris Mahoney, a hike with naturalist and story teller Michael Green highlighting the treasured spring ephemeral wildflowers, and a presentation by Director of Wildlife Tish Gailmard about RRANC's native raptors and snakes.

Request for Wild Ones Volunteers!
|
Volunteers are needed to help staff the Tennessee Valley Wild Ones booth at the spring plant sale at Reflection Riding. The dates of the sale are Friday and Saturday, April 10 and 11. Two shifts need to be covered each day. The shifts are from 9 AM until 1 PM and from 1 PM until 5 PM. Two volunteers are needed for each shift.
Tennessee Valley Wild Ones uses this venue to promote our local chapter of Wild Ones and, as always, to promote responsible stewardship of the ecosystem, starting with our own backyards.

Two Mountain
March Wildflower Madness
Two programs on two mountains
presented by
the Friends of the Cumberland Trail

You are cordially invited to learn how to reconnect gardens and public areas with nature by using native wildflowers, shrubs, trees, grasses and perennials.
There will be informal workshops on gardening with native plants and information about the restoration project on new land acquisitions on the Cumberland Trail State Scenic Trail that will extend 350 miles from Cumberland Gap to Lookout Mountain as part of the Great Eastern Trail.
Workshops (both Friday and Saturday):
- 11 am: Gardening for Pollinators
- 1 pm: Removing Pest Plants, Native alternatives to Exotics
- 2pm: The Cumberland Seeds Project and Ecological Restoration
- 3pm: Working with your native soils - Stop fighting the Mother Rock and start winning
A wide variety of native wildflowers, azaleas, perennials for sun and shade, flowering shrubs that support pollinators and feed the birds, as well as trees that do the hard work of providing food for the entire food web will be available for sale. You can also email ahead of time with your order at trailheadnursery@gmail.com and plants will be brought to Lookout Mountain for Friday pickup or held at the Trailhead Nursery for Saturday pickup.
Friday's event will be on Lookout Mountain, in the parking lot across from the Post Office at 824 Scenic Highway. Saturday's event will be on Signal Mountain at Trailhead Nursery, 54 Miller Cove Road in Lone Oak, TN.

Numen:
The Healing Power of Plants
a film documentary screening

Numen, defined as the animating force in nature, is a 75-minute documentary film focusing on the healing power of plants and the natural world.
Featuring stunning footage of medicinal plants and thought-provoking interviews with Drs. Tiearona Lowdog and Larry Dossey, the late Bill Mitchell, ND, author Kenny Ausubel, herbalists Rosemary Gladstar, Phyllis Light and many others, the film calls for a re-awakening of traditional knowledge about plants and their uses.
Numen is for herbalists, gardeners, medical practitioners, plant lovers-and everyone concerned about human and environmental health. It offers an introduction to the following topics:
- Whole plant medicine
- Ecological medicine
- Environmental toxins
- The limits of allopathic medicine
- Spirit and healing and more
A primary objective of Numen is to bring the same awareness to medicine and the medical industry that the organic food movement has brought to food and the food industry. The film presents a sobering view of conventional healthcare and the dangers of environmental insults, as well as a vision of safe, effective and sustainable medicine. It offers stories about how individuals have improved their own health and well-being and provides concrete steps for viewers to do so as well. Most broadly, the film encourages viewers to think deeply about the sources of their medicine and how their healthcare choices affect themselves and the larger web of life. It inspires us all to deepen our relationship with the natural world and reminds us of the healing made possible by re-embracing our place in the wider web of life."
There is a $5 suggested donation.

Propagation Workshop
with Vernon Bush
at the Huntsville Botanical Gardens
Saturday, May 2, 9am - 3pm EST
Back by popular demand, Vernon Bush will conduct a plant propagation workshop at the Huntsville Botanical Gardens [Alabama]. The workshop will include hands-on techniques for rooting plants, especially woody plants such as native azaleas and other rhododendrons. May is a good time of year to work with softwood cuttings.
The workshop registration fee is $20.00 per person and includes all materials for plant propagation -- fungicides, container, rooting mixture and softwood cuttings. You will leave with plants for your garden.
The class is limited to 15 participants - Wild Ones members only. To sign up, email us to hold your reservation.
Participants will pay the workshop fee to the Huntsville Botanical Gardens upon arrival on May 2.
Weather permitting, Wild Ones members may use this opportunity to enjoy the beautiful native plant garden display of late spring wildflowers. A $12.00 regular or $10.00 senior admission is required for the Huntsville Botanical Gardens.
Participants will also be encouraged to visit the Jackson Co. Arboretum en-route after the workshop.
Vernon Bush is a volunteer plantsman and rhododendron expert and currently involved with expanding the native plant gardens at Huntsville Botanical Garden. He established and continues to volunteer at the Jackson County, Alabama Park and Arboretum near Scottsboro, AL.

As you plan your yearly charitable giving, please consider supporting the Tennessee Valley Chapter of Wild Ones. Your membership dues cover only a portion of our annual operating expenses. The remainder comes from program admission fees and tax-deductible donations.
You may choose to direct your donation for one of three purposes:
SCHOLARSHIPS
Educational Scholarships are used to pay for program admission fees for people who cannot afford to pay. Examples of programs this donation supports are the annual native plant symposium and special speaker events.
EDUCATIONAL SPEAKERS
Tennessee Valley Wild Ones searches across the region and country for excellent speakers on a variety of topics, from pollinator health to landscape design. You can help us continue to offer high quality programming and help reduce the event admission fees we charge by contributing to the Speakers Fund.

Mike has shared his photos below of some of the more common Early Spring butterflies which now can be seen on native Redbud trees, with the exception of the Falcate Orangetip which is a low flier at around ground level. Henry's Elfin and Juniper Hairstreaks can also be seen on the Redbud trees over the next few weeks. All of these butterflies are small, being dime to nickel-sized. Be sure to take the time to look for these beautiful butterflies.
