Butterflies of Tennessee author Rita Venable to join Doug Tallamy at
2015 Native Plant Symposium
We are very pleased to announce that Rita Venable, author of the recently published book "Butterflies of Tennessee", has agreed to be a featured speaker at the Tennessee Valley Wild Ones 2015 Native Plant Symposium. The Symposium will be held on Saturday, January 24 at Chattanooga State Community College. Ms. Venable has published numerous articles and photographs in nature magazines including American Butterfly, American Gardener, Backpacker, Discover the Outdoors and National Wildlife Online. In addition, she has won Excellence in Craft awards in writing and photography from the Tennessee Outdoor Writers Association and the Southeastern Outdoor Press Association.
Ms. Venable has a bachelor's degree in Wildlife and Fisheries Science from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and was an assistant biologist with the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation. She is past editor of Butterfly Gardener, a publication of the North American Butterfly Association (NABA) and was a featured speaker at the NABA's June 2014 national convention that was held in Chattanooga. She is also the founder of the Middle Tennessee Chapter of the NABA.
Rita will be joined by award winning writer, ecologist, and entomologist Dr. Doug Tallamy who has already agreed to speak at the Symposium. Dr. Tallamy is a nationally recognized native plant expert and author of "Bringing Nature Home".

Wild Ones National Meeting Recap
August 15-16, 2014
Wild Center, Neenah, WI
Wild Ones celebrated its 35th anniversary August 16-17 at the Wild Center with a flurry of meetings, forums, and talks along with many opportunities to socialize. With Bill Moll, Katrina Hayes and Sally Wencel in attendance, our chapter was well represented throughout the two day gathering. This included participation in the national strategic planning session. Tennessee Valley Chapter members Katrina Hayes and Sally Wencel were elected to the national board at the meeting. They will serve one-year terms as Secretary and Vice-President, respectively. We offer our congratulations to both for a job well done. They will represent not only our chapter, but much of the Southeast!
Also in attendance was award-winning photographer and film director, Catherine Zimmerman. Catherine is creator of the Meadow Project and on Saturday she shared a brief segment from her upcoming video "Hometown Habitats". Her new film will showcase uplifting stories of habitat restoration from around the country. Wild Ones members Doug Tallamy, Steve Apfelbaum, Ned Dorff, and Hal Mann are all prominently featured. Because Wild Ones believes in the importance of this film they are donating the proceeds of their recent silent auction to help fund its production. The national office is also urging local chapters to donate to this venture. In response the TVWO board has approved donating $500.00 toward the effort.
This is an exciting project and a great way for Wild Ones to reach a national audience. Reflection Riding
27th Annual Fall Native Plant Sale
September 12-14
The 27th Annual Fall Native Plant Sale will take place at Reflection Riding Arboretum and Nature Center on Friday and Saturday, September 12th & 13th, 9 am-5 pm and Sunday, September 14th, from 12 noon -5 pm. More than 100 species of native plants will be available to choose from for your natural landscape. Experienced staff and volunteer gardeners will be on hand to educate visitors about Planting in the Fall and the importance of using native plants. This three-day event features free admission to Reflection Riding - their gardens, trails and exhibits. A variety of scheduled programs and naturalist-led walks will be offered during this three-day event.

Help Needed
The Tennessee Valley Chapter of Wild Ones will be setting up an information booth under a canopied space at the Reflection Riding Fall Native Plant Sale. We will have literature and handouts to promote native plants and to recruit new members to the Wild Ones. Your help is needed at the following times:
- Friday, September 12th from 9am- 1pm
- Saturday, September 13th from 9am-1pm
- Sunday, September 14th from 12pm-4pmThe Plant

Recap: May Prairie
Field Trip with Dennis Horn

It was warm and muggy, but great spirits prevailed on our recent field trip to May Prairie with field guide Dennis Horn. Dennis shared with us a wealth of information on both the common and not so common plants that make up one of Tennessee's natural treasures. Many summer and fall plants were blooming and as you can see, we got up close and personal with all of them.

Bee Houses Workshop

Saturday, September 20th

at the Food Bank Pavilion
The Southeast has more than 4,000 species of native bees, many of which are losing habitat due to poor urban and suburban landscaping practices. This is a critical loss for native plant gardeners who rely on them for pollination of their plants. In this workshop, participants will learn how to improve native bee habitat through the design, construction and installation of bee houses.
The workshop will begin with a short review of the different types of native bees and some examples of bee houses or "insect hotels". Following the review, Freeman will show bee houses that work from right here in Chattanooga.
Each participant will then be given the opportunity to make their own bee house to take home. Materials and tools will be provided.
This workshop is for Wild Ones members only.

Gee Creek Nature Walk

Saturday, September 27th
The ruggedness of this Cherokee National Forest hidden gem isn't evident until you start into its recesses. Prepare to be amazed at the deep pools of the small stream, the boulders and cliffs, all draped in rich lush forest. The hike of approximately 3-4 miles will go to Gee Creek Falls. Leave trailhead at 1pm.

Weekend Field Trip to Reelfoot Lake
with Leon Bates
October 24-26 
Join us for a three-day excursion to this beautiful natural wonder in Northwest Tennessee. Carpools will leave on Friday and return Sunday afternoon. The trip will be highlighted by a 3-hour pontoon boat excursion on Saturday morning. Lodging available at the Cypress Point Resort.
This trip is for Wild Ones members only.
Limit 20 participants.
Carpools leave Chattanooga Friday at 8am
and return by 5pm on Sunday.
