DEALS

GGV Capital-backed e-commerce company is raising $250 million at an $8 million valuation, after drawing $500 million in December 2016. Founders Fund and Formation 8 are also early investors in Wish. The startup has China connections via Alibaba and Jerry Yang.

Reaching farther into Southeast Asia, Alibaba has invested $1 billion in Indonesia online marketplace Tokopedia. It's a strong sign of the vibrancy and potential of Indonesia.

FUNDS

Asia Alternatives, which started as an all-women led fund of funds more than a decade ago, has morphed into a giant $1.8 billion fund that was just raised.  The independent group backs PE and VC funds in Asia's key markets, China and India included of course.

 NOTEWORTHY

deliveries, new-old
"New Retail" or online orders and offline delivery (so-called O20) are hot buzzwords in China. The underlying concept however has been around for much longer than one may think. See the newspaper ad that Shanghai entrepreneur George Godula  from Web2Asia dug up from September 1936. Using Shanghai Telephone Company, the modern Shanghai lady could order quicly and conveniently from the local department store, which would then swiftly deliver to the doorstep.

Speaking of new world,  Alipay and
JD.com recently launched a face scanning service named "Shua Lian" where users can pay by looking into a camera.
Using the facial recognition technology, the buyer can be identified and money can be deducted from their account within 1 to 2 seconds.  The technology (which seems kind of risky) is already being used on college campuses in China.
