  GETTING EXCITED
 FOR  ANOTHER
 GREAT SCHOOL YEAR ...

Professional Development Day
Rabbi  Hecht and Mrs. Morey strongly believe that professional development is an important part of education for our teachers. Before school even began, Rabbi  Hecht and Mrs. Morey discussed multiple articles, books and ideas for the August professional development with the HANC Middle School teachers. After much discussion and planning, Rabbi  Hecht opened the session with a fun and edible M&M activity for the teachers. The teachers were able to write their hopes for the new school year on a white board and by visualizing these hopes they were able to better plan the types of classrooms they envisioned for the new year. Then Mrs. Morey used the Danielson's Framework for Teaching to focus on Item #3C -- Student Engagement strategies for the classroom-- by modeling the activities. Rabbi  Hecht wrapped up the session by explaining the theme of innovation for the school year and his new mantra of Learn, Enjoy, Repeat to the entire staff.

7th GRADE WELCOME
On Tuesday, September 5, 2017, the Hebrew Academy of Nassau County Middle School held a gathering to officially welcome all 7th graders to HANC.
After a few announcements and introductions from Rabbi  Hecht, Dr. Levey and Mrs. Steiner facilitated a program utilizing the 6 pillars of character.

These are:

Fairness
Trustworthiness
Caring
Responsibility
Respect
Citizenship

After giving a brief introduction to the program, each student randomly
selected a character education stress ball that indicated which group
(Fairness, Trustworthiness, etc.,) they would be a part of for the program.
The students then joined the group leader with the same character education
stress ball.  A big thank you to our group leaders:

Mrs. Jennifer Morey, Assistant principal

Mrs. Miriam Steiner, School Social Worker and High School Director of
Admissions

Mrs. Rachel Fryman, Director of Learning Support

Mr. Stephen Potok, Math teacher

Mr. Benjamin Kalimi, Science teacher and

Mrs. Estee Esses, Social Work Intern

Each group worked on defining what their specific character meant to them by writing and drawing on a poster board size puzzle piece.  Once all the
groups finished, everyone gathered back together as one large group.  Each
group then presented to the rest of the class their puzzle piece.
Once all the groups and puzzle pieces were on the table, it became apparent
to the group that one piece was missing that was needed to complete the
puzzle.  Dr. Levey retrieved the last puzzle piece which had "HANC" written
on the board.

The takeaway from this program is that what makes HANC so unique and special is that each one of us, on a daily basis, to our friends, teachers and
everyone else, demonstrate each character trait - Fairness, Trustworthiness,
Caring, Responsibility, Respect and Citizenship.

After this portion of the program and some words about scheduling and such
from Rabbi  Hecht, the students enjoyed ice cream sundaes and popcorn
provided by the PTA.

September 11th Commemoration

On Monday, September 11, 2017, middle school students and faculty gathered for an assembly on 9/11.  The assembly was led by Mrs. Seeno, who discussed the events of 9/11, which included a powerful video clip of newscasting events that took place capturing minute by minute coverage during this tragic event.  Students then watched a video clip of a 9/11 survivor and his account of what happened that tragic day.  Throughout the day, students continued to learn about the events of 9/11 and had the opportunity to ask questions.

On Tuesday September 12th, HANC Middle School held their annual Back to School Night, where parents had the opportunity to experience their students' schedule  in 8 minute periods. After signing in parents heard Rabbi  Hecht officially welcome them to the new school year with a D'var Torah, Mrs. Morey discussed the theme of innovation and genius hour, and finally Mrs. Fredman wrapped up the speeches by talking about new educational technological initiatives. Parents began their schedules by seeing mini lessons from Rabbi Olshan, Rabbi Harris, Morah Hakimian, Morah Klein and Morah Greener. In the halls the excitement was apparent as they discussed the Mishna, Gemara, Navi, Chumash and Jewish History that their students were learning. Mrs. Aronowitz, Morah Greener and Mrs. Fershtman all spoke in English, for one night only, to explain the interactive and immersive environment of their classes. Finally, the parents watched mini lessons from the general studies teachers. Mrs. Seeno discussed how current events will be used in her Social Studies classes. Mrs. Wasser and Mrs. Morey spoke about the importance of writing and stressed reading skills in their English classes. Mrs. Seltzer and Mr. Potok explained the creative and useful nature of math. Mr Kalimi stressed the importance of interesting and fun labs in science class. Back to School Night concluded with all of the parents sharing in their students' enthusiasm for the new school year.

Big Brother/Big Sister program

On Wednesday, September 13, 2017 the Counseling Department held the first Middle School Big Brother/Big Sister program of the 2017/2018 academic year.

The Big Brother/Big Sister program is where new students to HANC (students who were not previously in a HANC school for 6th or 7th grade) are paired with a student that attended HANC the previous year.

This year we have 16 students in the program!

Today's kickoff program, led by Mrs. Miriam Steiner, was designed for each student to begin getting to know the other students in the program.

First the students had a delicious pizza lunch!   Next, two rows of chairs were set up, 8 on one side and 8 on the other.   On one side were the new students to HANC and opposite them was their Big Brother or Big Sister.

Each student was given a card with a question on it that they then asked the student sitting across from them.   Once each student answered the question, the students then rotated clockwise, sitting in a new seat opposite a new student whereby they were asked a new question.

Some example questions were:
* If you could be any superhero, which one would it be?
* During my free time I like to ________?
* What are your goals for Middle School?

The students thoroughly enjoyed getting to know each other!

A big thank you to the Middle School Administration, Mrs. Steiner and Ms. Tuck!

Stay tuned for future updates on the HANC Middle School Big Brother/Big Sister program.
