DEAN'S MESSAGE
Later this week, our Professional Advisory Council (PAC) will be joining us for our semi-annual meeting. At their own expense, this group of 25 accomplished individuals bring their professional insight and wisdom to us from many geographic regions and disciplines, truly illustrating a collaborative and generous spirit to help us achieve our goals. We welcome Executive Vice Chancellor Donde Plowman as she joins us for a portion of the meeting. If you see any of the PAC members, please thank them for their incredible service to our College!

Best regards,
Kathy
RECRUITING CORNER
Do you know a high school student who shares your passion for architecture, interior design, landscape architecture and community and regional planning? Do you have a friend who is interested in design? If so, please be sure to tell them to check out our Open House here at the College of Architecture in September and/or our Omaha Reception hosted by DLR in November! Anyone with questions should contact Leslie Gonzalez directly at leslie.gonzalez@unl.edu .

LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE
Congratulations to Professor Richard Sutton, FASLA, for being award the American Society of Landscape Architects Honor Award for Research for his work on “Seeding Green Roofs for Greater Biodiversity and lower Costs”. Green roof construction technology has come a long way, but the profession remains reliant on varieties of Sedum despite their less than-optimal biodiversity profile. This research project demonstrates that native grasses can be economically and ecologically sustainable in green roof scenarios.
ARCHITECTURE
We are now well into the swing of the fall semester! This past week, Architecture Hall and beyond has been the location for a flurry of project activity to share with our visitors and residents alike. Park(ing) Day (Friday), studio critiques, product design installations, the Hyde Lecture hick-off – all evidence of interest and involvement in the design world within and outside our walls. Just a couple activities coming up: Hyde Speaker Shashi Caan on Wednesday, and sixth year thesis students will have their first review on Tuesday, September 26 (mark on your calendars). Take a moment to stop, watch, listen, participate – get engaged. See you there! – Sharon Kuska
COMMUNITY AND REGIONAL PLANNING
Post-Doctoral Research Associate Dr. Daniel Uden from UNL’s School of Natural Resources, met with students in Dr. Zhenghong Tang’s Environmental Planning and Policy course on September 6. His presentation “Causes and Consequences of Land Cover Changes in Landscapes of Nebraska” focused on three examples illustrating how social systems and decisions of people relate to systems found in the natural environment. Dr. Uden’s examples included descriptions of oak tree distribution in eastern Nebraska, wetland connectivity in the Rainwater Basin of Nebraska and scenario-based planning for conservation decision-making in western Nebraska. CRPL 470/870 - Environmental Planning and Policy is offered once each year and is open to UNL undergraduate and graduate students in multiple disciplines. - Gordon Scholz
INTERIOR DESIGN
“The ‘designer,’ loosely defined, has secured a prominent place in the cultural dialogue…[and] ‘interior design’ as a pastime has never captured more general interest. A growing appreciation for the value of design has fueled the advancement of the professions, but it has also led to dilettantism in the field. Cable television shows and shelter magazines loudly proclaim that anyone can design, thus diminishing recognition for the designer’s unique skills and abilities......" More-
