Spotlight

Pat Scully:
actor, board member

Pat Scully had no real involvement in theater until he was 50.  When his eldest son joined an acappella group, Pat was talked into taking voice lessons.  His vocal coach soon goaded him into auditioning for  A Christmas Carol  which led to his first acting role (as Scrooge) and he was hooked.

He went on to perform in over a dozen shows over the next few years, mostly musicals.  When he moved to Portland in 2015, he decided it might make sense to get some formal acting lessons, and showed up in Snowlion Rep's classes taught by Al D'Andrea.  His looks, background, and talent made him a natural fit for Anything Helps God Bless.

He has been involved as a member of the Board of Maine State Music Theatre for many years, and has learned to appreciate the difficulty and talent it takes to put on plays and musicals.  Pat recently joined the Snowlion Rep board, and has already proven to be an invaluable asset to our growth and future.  Thanks, Pat, for being part of Snowlion Rep!

The Conquest of the South Pole
Unemployed Rumford Maine mill workers imaginatively recreate Amundsen's trek to the south pole in an attic full of white sheets, in order to empower themselves amidst gut-wrenching hardships, with startling and life-affirming results. New England premiere.
Jan 26 - Feb 4, 2018

A Cherry Orchard
in Maine
This new adaptation tells of a centuries-old family of Mainers with a Midcoast farm and rare cherry orchard soon to be lost for unpaid back taxes.  Based on Chekhov's classic, this world premiere is quirky, timely and fits Maine like a moose in a meadow.

Politics can be a dull affair for many, but in Anything Helps God Bless, the attempt to pass a simple safety ordinance impacting the lives of Portland's numerous panhandlers is the stuff of a Law and Order episode - by turns comic, dramatic, but always a passionate battle between two opposite sides who are heroic in their stances - there are no villains here.  How is that possible?  Anything Helps God Bless opens September 29 - come find out!

Sincerely,

Al D'Andrea, Artistic Director

WE HAVE EXCITING NEWS!

How Do YOU Feel About Panhandling?
How Do YOU Feel About Panhandling?
  • Anything Helps God Bless just received a substantial grant from the Maine Arts Commission,  an independent state agency supported by the National Endowment for the Arts, in support of the production.
  • The mayor of Portland has made his reservations.  HOW ABOUT YOU?
Anything  Helps God Bless is the funny, touching, and ultimately life-affirming story of Portland's contentious panhandler/median strip controversy, told in the words of the players themselves:  city councilors, advocates, lawyers, mayors, police, neighborhood association heads, the press, the public, and of course, the panhandlers themselves.

Saturday September 30 at 7:30 pm

PLAYLAB premieres its new format -
open to the public

For its first 5 years, PlayLab was a membership organization devoted to helping develop plays by Maine playwrights in closed feedback sessions, presenting over 50 new works.  Now, PlayLab expands, opening its doors to the public for presentations of new full-length plays.

The  Tuesday October 3  PlayLab will feature a dramatic new play by Portland's own Michael Tooher.

In The Perfect Sameness of Our Days, two victims of war meet in a deserted urban lot, where their startling interaction leads to disquieting revelations.  Featuring some of the best acting talent in Maine, this new play is a chilling exploration of the true costs of war.

IMAGINATION & INSTINCT:
The Spirit of Acting Technique

Teacher Al D'Andrea and his students will use a variety of games, exercises, techniques and improvisations to take an in-depth look at how to develop a strong and fluid imagination and hone the actor's instinct to bring spontaneity and authenticity to the actor's work.  Much of the teaching comes directly from Al's studies with stage legend Stella Adler.

The workshop is ideal for experienced actors who seek to master their use of this important element of stagecraft, while beginning actors receive a strong foundation in understanding the many and varied aspects of these critical tools in the actor's arsenal.  The class is open to all, ages 16 and up.
