The Blessing of Those Who Have Gone Before
By Jane Wirth, St. George's

As
we grow older we have more and more people to remember, people who have died before us. It is very important to remember  those who have loved us and those we have loved. Remembering them means letting their spirits inspire us in our daily lives. They can become part of our spiritual communities and gently help us as we make decisions on our journeys. Parents, spouses, children, and friends can become true spiritual companions after they have died. Sometimes they can become even more intimate to us after death than when they were with us in life. Remembering the dead is choosing their ongoing companionship.

Henri J. M. Nouwen,
Bread for the Journey

Many cultures have days and ways when they celebrate those who have died.  In the Celtic tradition, Samhain was observed half way between the autumn equinox and winter solstice. It marked the end of the harvest and the beginning of winter.  One of the ways Samhain is honored was with a feast. The souls of those who had died and departed from the community were invited to attend.  It is believed the early Christian tradition we call All Hallows Day, or All Souls Day, emerged from this tradition.

Of course on October 31
st  we will see children in costumes on All Hallows Eve having fun collecting goodies. Evensong might be celebrated in some churches on that evening with the major service coming the next day on All Hallows Day, or what we call All Souls Day.

At St. George's we have a tradition of marking All Souls Day by walking the labyrinth to honor those who have been a part of our lives but are not with us any longer.  It is a time for us to take time from our busy schedules to share stories, pictures, or momentous that reminds us of their place in our lives and hearts. They may be people who loved us, or those who guided us with their examples. Perhaps it might be someone who has supported your spiritual walk.

Please join us at St. George's in Antioch for this time of remembrance!

When: Tuesday, November 1
Time: 6:30 to 8:00 PM - come for any or all of the time
Trained facilitators will be available to help those who may not be familiar with how to use the labyrinth. Finger labyrinths, and other options, will be available for those who prefer, or may have mobility problems. For questions call Jane or Craig Wirth at 925.432.1453

In viting, welcoming and connecting people who come to our churches are critical and strategic steps for building healthy, vibrant and growing congregations. Mary developed materials, including easy-to-use check lists for each step to provide an objective assessment of a church's current situation. The assessment tools are supported by an extensive list of creative and concrete resources and examples to form an intentional newcomer ministry that results in a systemic and positive change to participating congregations.
