Summer 2017
Hello ISANNE friends,

As we turn the calendar from July to August, we hope that you are finding time to step back, relax, reflect on the past year and envision the year ahead with new clarity and purpose. Often, as we engage in the routine of the daily schedule and participate in school events, we lose sight of the larger purpose of our work. Staying true to our mission is the primary guide of our work and requires us to find time to regularly gauge our progress. While every ISANNE school conducts a formal evaluation every ten years through the accreditation process, sustaining our edge includes frequent pulse checks.

It is our goal at ISANNE to provide strong Professional Development opportunities that offer the chance throughout the year to check the pulse. In June, ISANNE launched a new offering, the ISANNE Retreat with support from our EE Ford Foundation grant for participating school teams to come together and take stock of their school's vital mission work. Heads from eight schools brought their administrative leadership teams to the Trapp Lodge in VT for three days of work and reflection. We were guided by David Grant, consultant and former head and director of the Geraldine Dodge Foundation. David led us in a series of meaningful assessments relative to our mission. Teams also learned about their working-relationship dynamics in the DISC assessment and how to effectively engage in difficult conversations with presenters Whit Mitchell and Francis Eberle. We enjoyed views of the mountains, walks in the woods, an evening sing around the piano, great food and community building. We are designing next year's Retreat where we will again create a chance for teams to step out of their daily workflow into important "Mission Time."

In the meantime, we are active with ISANNE's affinity groups planning a great schedule of events for 2017-2018! If you have ideas or thoughts about topics or presenters for this year's conferences, now is the time to let us know! Please drop a line to Deb Cook at [email protected]. Review the schedule here and save the dates! Registration is now open for the NE Town Academies Conference and will be open for other Fall conferences in August.  Enjoy the rest of summer and we look forward to seeing you soon!

This month's Member View comes to us from Fanning Hearon, Head of School at Maple Street School, Manchester, VT.

"Everything I need to know,
I learned in kindergarten"

I finally understand what the adage above truly means, and it only took me 25 years of school to get there!  I have just completed my first year of headship, and it was a wild and wonderful experience. In July of 2016, after 24 years spent working in a variety of roles at the secondary level of three different independent schools, I assumed the role of Head of School at a K-8 coeducational day school in Manchester, Vermont. By some measure, I had come full circle in my career.

Fortunately, the first chapter of this learning curve ends well. I would even go so far as to proclaim the past year a possible career highlight for me because I was able to once more play the envious role of student. I am not yet an expert in primary or middle school education, but I have learned enough to realize that career secondary school educators could learn a thing or two from the K-8 world."  Read more .
Cognitive Science - from The Educator's Notebook

What did you eat for breakfast this morning? It matters more than you might think.  Anyone whose job depends on their body-like an Olympic athlete, builder, or ballet dancer-needs a diet to match; they might start the day with a slow-release carbohydrate to give them longer-lasting energy. But few people with "thinking" jobs sit down first thing in the morning and consider which foods and drinks will help them make good decisions that day, improve their focus, and reduce stress. And that's a mistake.

What we put into our bodies has a powerful impact on our brains, which only weigh 2-3% of our body weight but use up 25-30% of the energy that's found in what we eat.  Our brains need to be properly cared for in order to make sure we perform at our best. You'd never jump in your car and set off without filling up the tank or checking the oil. If you tried to, you wouldn't expect to get very far. Our brains are similar: They need to be properly fueled and hydrated in order to run smoothly, and we shouldn't expect optimal performance when they're not. " Read More
