MATTHEWS
       CHURCH OF GOD
            MONTHLY MESSENGER

August, 2017 - In This Issue:
Proverbs 29:18 a  "Where there is no vision, the people perish"

Helen Keller was once asked:  "What would be worse than being born blind?"
She replied:  "Having sight without a vision"

What a profound statement by someone born into this world deaf, dumb and blind.
She couldn't help how she came into this world but she could help how she would leave it.

We must not lose sight of the purpose of the church.

The Harvard Business Review did an article on 'Market Myopia' which was about how some people don't understand what business they are in.

The railroad people didn't realize that they were in the transportation business; they thought they were in the railroad business.  Had they realized they were in the transportation business they would have invested in the airplane.

The telegraph people thought they were in the telegraph business instead of the communication business.  In 1886 they could have bought all the telephone patents for $ 40,000.

What business are we in as a church?

We must not forget that we are in the people business; w e are in the business of winning souls.

We need to have a positive attitude toward the church;  promote it,  talk it up and not down!

The  church will grow as we love people into it; w e have to let people know that we care.

Your level of involvement in the church speaks volumes about your relationship with God.

Bruce Lee had a fighting style unlike any other because he developed it himself. The main part of his fighting style was to aim 6 inches beyond his target.

What a concept for Christians and for the church!
We've got to look beyond the four walls of the church and see the global harvest.
We have a tendency to aim short of the target; we're  afraid to step out into the water.

We must have vision so that we will not stop short of the promise.

Vision where we will aim higher and shoot further.
Vision that launches us further out into the deep.
Vision that gives us faith to believe!

CELEBRATING SIXTY THREE YEARS

It's our 63rd Anniversary!

We are celebrating 63 years this month in the same location. Matthews Church of God was organized by W.C. Lambert on August 8, 1954 with 27 members; the State Overseer was Earl P. Paulk.

The church has come a long way from its initial beginning in a cinder block building on E. John Street. Today the church has 408 members with property valued in excess of 2.2 million dollars.

We are thankful for every pastor, every member and every friend who have contributed to the success of the church.

Join us on Sunday, August 6 for a time of celebration as we mark this great milestone in the history of our church. There will be cake and ice cream served following the evening service.
