It's the Great Pumpkin Potluck, Charlie Brown!
Saturday, Oct. 22nd, 5:00 p.m. in the Core Area at UUFSD
|
Death Cafe, North County Coastal
Saturday, October 29th, 2:00-4:00pm In the Core Area at UUFSD
|

|
Join The Willage at UUFSD for a Pumpkin Potluck and Chili Cookoff in honor of the bounty of autumn. Everyone in the UUFSD community is invited!
If you've been wondering what The Willage is all about (and would like to connect with the families of young children at the fellowship) this is a great opportunity to find out.
Please email whether or not you are on Team Pumpkin (and will bring a savory or sweet autumn-themed dish -- store-bought is fine) or Team Chili (and will bring your best chili for entry in our competition -- there will be a prize!).
We will also have a couple of old-fashioned harvest activities for the kids and read a spooky story or two by candlelight. Feel free to wear costumes or just come in PJs (remember, all Willage events are Judgment-Free Zones). Hooray for autumn-time!
|
For the third consecutive year, UUFSD will be hosting a Death Cafe -- an opportunity to talk openly about death and dying in a neutral, confidential and (believe it or not) lively environment. Death Cafe is a non-profit international movement that grows in popularity every year, and many people are now adding the Death Cafe experience to their bucket lists (fittingly so!).
The event is from 2-4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29 in the Core Area and is free of charge, open to all and offered with no intention of leading participants toward any conclusion, product or course of action.
The sole objective of the Death Café experience is to increase awareness of death, while helping people make the most of their lives.
This event is always packed and we do expect a waiting list. You can register at bit.ly/deathcafencc, or email Tiffany Fox [email protected] for more details.

Dia de los Muertos Services
Sunday, October 30th, 9:00am & 11:00am
Next Sunday morning we will be participating in the Mexican celebration of el Dia de los Muertos, the Day of the Dead. This is an opportunity to invite the spirit of our ancestors back to visit and party with us when the veil between the world of the living and the world of the dead is believed to be the thinnest. We invite you to bring an item to the service that would entice your ancestor or deceased loved one back to celebrate with us for the day. Ideas: sewing scissors because your great aunt loved to sew, your father's all-time favorite chocolate bar, your grandpa's tobacco pipe, or simply a photo. We are looking forward to seeing you at this intergenerational service (childcare but no RE classes).

Oct. 30th is the LAST Day to Sign Up to Host a Dining for Dollar$ Event
Do you like to cook scrumptious dinners for a crowd or take friends on a hike? Do you have a skill you'd like to teach, like teaching grandparents how to use Instagram? Or, how about providing a service like babysitting so a couple of parents can get the night off. These are just some of the events and services you can offer to host for Dining for Dollar$ (D4$)-the fall fundraiser for UUFSD.
How Does Dining for Dollar$ Work? With D4$, you can host an event, you can participate in an event, or you can do both. (1) To host an event: * Fill out the D4$ application no later than October 30: http://uufsd.org/giving/ways-to-give/. Make sure you select 3 date and time options-from January 1, 2017 to June 30, 2017-for when you want your event or service scheduled. If the event or service doesn't require a scheduled date and time, write or type TBA (to be arranged). (2) To participate in an event: * Sign up for events and services on Sign-Up Sundays-November 6 & 13. The D4$ committee will send you a bill. Your host will contact you once you've paid for your event. Note: some events may have waiting lists. So, sign up for an event even if it seems completely booked because you might be able to go after all. Dining for Dollar$ Ideas Here are some D4$ ideas for you to consider. * Themed dinner (ethnic food; costumes; wild women; etc) * Cookout for families * Cocktails and appetizers * Picnic in a park or at the beach * Tea and play-reading * A day at the zoo with a picnic * Teach how to cook your favorite recipe and then serve it * Folk singing and feasting * A lesson - tennis, art, knitting, gardening, social media * Poolside luau * Board games and dessert * Stress relief - light food, meditation, massage, Jacuzzi * Watch a movie or sports event with snacks or dinner * Cupcake baking and decorating * Poker and barbecue * Yoga, appetizers, and wine * Poetry reading and wine in your garden * Stitch 'n bitch party * Karaoke party If you want to host an event but can't do the whole thing yourself, let us know and we'll try to find you a partner(s). One goal of D4$ is to have something for people of all ages, interests, and financial abilities. Think creatively, think fun, think fellowship. Don't forget to fill out the application https://goo.gl/forms/RsMPPtsEoDFD29AH3. NOTE: Asterisk (*) means required field.
Contact Glen and Alice at [email protected] or (760) 721-6327 if you have any questions.

Dinner and a Movie Night Sunday, October 30th, 6:00-9:00pm in Founders Hall
Join the Environmental Justice Task Force for a sustainable pot luck dinner and a presentation on the state of the science on climate change on Sunday, October 30th, from 6 until 9PM at Founder's Hall.
But What Can I Do? That's the number one question I hear from people when they're confronted with the all-too-grim facts on climate change.
Well, it turns out we can do a lot. The food we eat is responsible for between 19 and 29% of all greenhouse gas emissions. Eating a more sustainable diet can cut that almost in half, add a few years to your life, and make those years more vital. Tastes good, too.
Interested parties can pick up a handout providing guidance on sustainable food choices after the services on October 23, or request one by emailing John Atcheson at
[email protected].
