Midori Appointed Distinguished Visiting Artist

Violinist Midori has been appointed a distinguished visiting artist at the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University for the 2016-17 season. Recognized worldwide as one of the legendary violinists of our times, an extraordinary performer, a gifted educator, and an innovative community engagement activist, Midori will visit campus throughout the academic year to conduct master classes at both the Conservatory and the Preparatory and deliver interdisciplinary presentations to other Johns Hopkins academic divisions. "I can't think of an artist more accomplished, or better suited, to serve in this role and share with our campus community the important lessons of building a multi-faceted, holistic musical career, and who more clearly demonstrates what it means to be a citizen-artist in the 21st Century," says Fred Bronstein, dean of the Peabody Institute.

FROM THE DEAN

The Peabody Institute experience includes providing our students with exposure to artists working at the highest level of the music world.  For example, this year Peabody students worked with Marin Alsop, now director of graduate conducting at Peabody, recording a disc for Naxos in the first of a number of planned recordings by the Peabody Symphony Orchestra. Our students also had the chance to work with guest conductors visiting the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, including Hannu Lintu and newly appointed BSO principal guest conductor, Markus Stenz.

In this regard, I am especially excited about next year, when Marin Alsop will conduct the PSO in a fall program, and Peabody will welcome Leonard Slatkin, music director of the Detroit Symphony, to conduct in the spring. In addition, plans are in the works for a second Naxos CD to be recorded during the 2016-17 academic year.

As noted above, we also recently announced that Midori will be a distinguished visiting artist at Peabody next year. She will share her unique insights about music, teaching, and the artist's role today, giving master classes in the Conservatory and Preparatory, as well as a number of interdisciplinary programs across other schools at the university.

As you can see, there is much to be excited about as we look forward to September.
