I recently had a conversation with Anne Maguire who works for the Omaha Equestrian Foundation.  She mentioned her aunt who is a long time Kansas native and is still riding in her 80's.  I hope you enjoy hearing about her as much as I did.
Provided by Anne Maguire -
My aunt, Marguerite Sloan, taught me how to ride a horse when I was a young girl. More than 50 years later, I'm still riding horses and so is she!

Marguerite spent most of her life in Leavenworth, Kansas. She was a 4H horse club leader for 26 years, sharing her love and knowledge of horses with the next generation. Trail riders may remember Marguerite from her 17 years as a horsemanship judge for NATRC.

Now in her 80's, Marguerite rides her 17-year old mule, Jamie, whenever the weather permits. In fact, over the past 14 years, she and Jamie have logged nearly 1900 hours on the trails, which equates to more than 7,000 miles in the saddle. Marguerite has kept logs and journals of all her rides for the NASMA (North American Saddle Mule Association).

She now lives in Forsyth, Missouri. When she's not blazing new trails through the woods or doing chores, she enjoys painting and spending time with her family and her dog, Daisy.

I'm lucky enough to own one of her paintings, a self-portrait of Marguerite and Jamie on Huffman's Bluff.

In case you haven't heard, the 2017 Longines FEI World Cup Jumping Final and FEI World Cup Dressage Final are being held in Omaha next spring!!  It's very exciting to have this level of competition so close to home.

Omaha beat out Hong Kong and London for this honor.  In 2018, the FEI World Cup Finals will be in Paris.  Omaha's location, in the heart of the Midwest, makes the event easily accessible for North Americans.  And Cavallo Magazine had this to say about Omaha, "The vibrant city of Omaha, a mid-western sport-loving gem that staged several Olympic trials ahead of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, offers a variety of attractions including top restaurants, hotels and museums, and will be a fascinating back-drop to a week of great sport . . . "

Beyond competition, the Horse Expo (free and open to the public) will welcome more than 150 vendors showcasing tack, clothing and everything a horse enthusiast could want or need!  In addition, the family-friendly Horse Exploration Zone brings the world renowned Equimania exhibit, U.S. Pony Club demos and the Gallery of Breeds, where families can get up close and personal with horses from the tiniest miniatures to massive drafts.

In the heart of the free expo, visitors will find the Warm-up Arena.  Here they can watch their favorite competitors warm up before entering their event. The famous Tailgate Lounge, serving gourmet food and a full bar, is located on one side of the Warm-up Arena.  Guests can eat, drink, shop and watch horses, all in one place!  Some of the region's best bands will perform nightly in the Tailgate Lounge keeping the Expo hopping until 11 p.m. Thursday through Saturday night.

DOB: Approx. 2003 ~ G: Mare ~ HT: 15h2" ~ WT: 1150

Meliah was one of nine horses seized in September 2014 in Coffey County, KS, due to extreme neglect. She and six others were placed into custodial care where they were immediately started on a rehabilitation program to counter the effects of malnutrition and neglect. The horses were signed over to Rainbow Meadows upon their previous owner's conviction of animal cruelty, allowing them to be made available for adoption. Meliah is saddle trained, but would best be paired with an experienced rider who can help her gain confidence in people and in her surroundings
