Dear St. George Families,
Last week I was talking with a former colleague from Washington. He was frustrated with the lack of courtesy that some of his students showed. He recounted a story of how his grammar school taught these skills. He said, "In my grammar school, the sisters prepared a well-defined curriculum. In seventh and eighth grade, we would have four days of religion, but on Fridays, we would have a class on Christian courtesy. As a young boy, I would think, "what a waste of time." Everything in this class was just going to be a rehash of what our parents taught us at home. Of course, the sisters emphasized that courtesy was a sign of respect for God's greatest creation - man and woman - and Jesus elevated that dignity by becoming one with us. Therefore, it was extremely important that we reflected this in our behavior toward others: respect for God and neighbor. Our actions said something about our appreciation for others and ourselves."
He goes on "Today, I would like to propose that all schools re-institute Christian courtesy or civic (civil) courtesy. It seems to me that simple manners have been lost. How many of us fail to hold a door open for someone struggling to enter a store or a restaurant? When was the last time you saw someone offer their seat on public transportation to an elderly person or a pregnant woman? I am sure that most of us have experienced people cutting in line or jumping to the front because they feel their time was more important than yours. Of course, the terms "sir" and "ma'am" have all but been lost to the common vocabulary for decades. They have disappeared along with words like "please," "thank you" or "you're welcome." It is now almost a shock for someone to be polite...
Although I listened attentively, I couldn't help but think of how proud I am of our students at St. George. It is a common occurrence for students to hold the door open for each other, to help others in need. The terms "sir" and "ma'am" are used frequently when addressing adults. "Please" and "thank you" are heard throughout the day on our campus. Our students are "a cut above", we are blessed.

Science Club - Middle School
Middle School students who love science are welcomed to join the Science Club. Meetings are held after school until 4:00pm on Thursdays in selected months.

Grandparents Day - Friday, November 11
A packet will be sent home with your youngest/only child on Tuesday, October 18th. It contains 3 invitations for Grandparents Day, which is Friday November 11th, 2016. Please mail or hand-deliver these invitations to Grandparents or Special Friends. The invitations contain all of the information needed regarding times and parking. Additional invitations are available in the office, if needed.
This year you will be given an opportunity to purchase a special photography session with your child(ren) and their grandparents from Barberito Photography. Information regarding this special photography session is included in the packet.

SGS Winter Follies Goes To The Movies!
Show Dates: January 21 and 22, 2017
This SGS Extracurricular Arts Program is a unique educational series that will allow 5
th
thru 8
th
grade students the opportunity to explore and develop their talent and interest in the Performing Arts - vocal and instrumental music, theatre, and dance. Techniques in each discipline/performance area will be taught and enriched through a culminating music theatre production under the direction of St. George Talented Music & Theatre Teachers, Mrs. Jan Dupre and Mrs. Sonya Blanchard.
- Vocal, Dance, Monologue auditions will be held after school on Friday, October 28.
- Instrumental auditions will be in early December, date TBA.

8th Grade Fall Athletes Special Recognition - All 8th grade athletes involved in Football, Dance,and Cheer (and their parents) are invited to be recognized at the start of the 7/8th Grade Football Game.
- Wednesday, 11/2/16 @ 7:15pm; St. George Parish Gym
8th Grade Fall Athletes Special Recognition - All 8th grade girls basketball players, swimmers, and cross country runners (and their parents) are invited to be recognized before tipoff of the 8th grade game.
- Thursday, 11/3/16-11/4/16 3-5th Grade Boys Developmental Basketball Evaluation Permission Slips are available on the website and must be printed out, signed, and returned to school (ATTN: Michele Munson) by 10/31/16 to be able to participate in evaluations. Times yet to be determined.
- Monday,11/7/16 3rd - 5th Grade Boys Basketball practices begin.
- Monday, 11/13/16-11/18/16 6th-8th Grade CSAA (Formerly CSAL) Varsity Tryouts and Junior Varsity (Formerly CYO) Evaluations

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

ROSARIES FOR HAITI
SGS 2nd & 8th graders made rosaries which will be donated to a mission group from Thibodaux, LA. The mission group will bring the rosaries to Haiti when they travel there for a mission trip.
Our DK, K, and 1st graders made prayer beads to use as they learn how to say the rosary. Big Buddies helped their little buddies make their rosary/prayer beads.
The rosaries made have special colored beads (yellow, blue, red, green, and white) for each decade. Each colored decade represents a different region of the world which will be prayed for as that decade of the rosary is prayed.

HIGH SCHOOL OPEN HOUSES
Tours will begin at 4:30 p.m., and the last tour will start at
7:00 p.m. Parents and their 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students are invited to join us to tour the school and learn all the great things that St. Michael has to offer. Contact: [email protected]
Catholic High School
: Thursday, November 10, 2016, from 5-7 p.m. The program is designed for young men in grades 6-8 and their parents to experience firsthand what makes CHS so special. Prospective families will have the opportunity to tour the campus, meet faculty and students, and learn about the application and admission process.
Visiting families are encouraged to park in the Westmorland parking lot on Government Street. Additional parking will be available at the St. Joseph Academy Activity Center, with a shuttle running to and from the CHS campus. Contact:

Young People's Beginning Experience
Has your child experienced a loss of a parent due to death, divorce or separation of a parent? This is a weekend for healing and moving forward through the grieving process. Young People's Beginning Experience will take place October 21-23, 2016, at Rosaryville Retreat Center (39003 Rosaryville Road, Ponchatoula, LA 70454).
The cost is $165 and covers 2 nights lodging/food. For ages: 12-17.
