Register for the Zero Waste Celebration
It's time to register for the second annual Zero Waste Celebration! Join us on November 12th at Hocking College to recognize the accomplishments our community has made towards zero waste, help us create a map of local zero waste infrastructure, and vision forward with us to a future without waste. The Celebration will also include an engaging panel discussion around issues of organics, construction and demolition, policy, and waste reduction. Registration is FREE and a dinner catered by Hocking College is included! Click here to claim your spot.
Nominations are also being accepted for the Waste Not awards, which recognize members of the community who are taking steps toward zero waste and highlight their important work. We will present the awards to the recipients at the Zero Waste Celebration. Recipients will also be recognized on Rural Action's website and social media. Any school, school teacher, or student, as well as any business, organization or individual in the community is eligible for one of these awards.
Nominations can be submitted through an online form. Self-nominations are okay, too! Nominations are due October 26th.
Note: The ReUse Competition Awards are taking place earlier in the day at the same location (see below partner event announcement). You could make November 12th a whole zero waste day!

Libraries Launch New Composting and Recycling Efforts
Nelsonville Library just launched two new efforts to divert waste from the landfill: outdoor recycling and food composting. Now when patrons walk into the library, they'll have a place to recycle their bottles and cans before entering. And, this summer, when kids flood the library for great programming, they will be able to compost the food waste from their lunches with a new compost tumbler outside the library.
"We feel like we are making a large stride forward in our ability to reduce waste and it doesn't feel like we are doing any more work to accomplish it! The youth and adults who interacted with the team learned a lot about the reasons to recycle and how to make it simple," said Amy King, Coordinator of Enrichment and Outreach for the Athens Public Libraries.
The library is taking these new steps to reduce waste by participating in Rural Action's Zero Waste Pledge project. The Plains Library and Chauncey Library will also be taking the Zero Waste Pledge this fall. You can visit the Rural Action team in action at the Chauncey Library on October 20th. They will be distributing recycling bins and composting information to library patrons between 4 and 5:30pm. Or, you can
take the pledge for your organization, business, school, or household!

Partner News: ReUse Industries to Launch MakerSpace
ReUse Industries will soon be opening Athens MakerSpace to support local making, fixing and upcycling by providing tools, workspace and classes in creative disciplines including woodworking, fabric/fiber arts, electronics, metalworking, upcycling and digital design and fabrication (3D printing, laser cutting, CNC routing).
Athens MakerSpace partners include Rural Action, Ohio University's Voinovich School of Leadership and Public Affairs, woodworker David Wakefield and Ohio University's Innovation Center.
The makerspace will open following renovations at 751 W. Union St. in Athens and will be the new home for ReUse Industries' Tool Library, Fix-It Workshops and upcycling. Their retail site on Columbus Road will remain. The 3rd Annual ReUse Competition is one of the first makerspace-sponsored events (see article in this newsletter). The makerspace will also offer upcycling materials, locally-made upcycled products, refurbished computers and other retail items.

Partner Announcement: Help Ohio U. Win Game Day Again
Ohio University won the national Game Day Challenge Championship in 2015 and they need your help to do it again. Game Day Challenge is a recycling event held among universities and colleges across the nation to recycle the most during a sporting event. Partner Announcement: Enter the ReUse Competition
ReUse Industries' 3rd Annual ReUse Competition is underway. Registration deadline to participate in the competition is November 1. The final Exhibition and Awards, which is free and open to the public, takes place on November 12 at Hocking College preceding Rural Action's annual Zero Waste Celebration (see above article). Competition categories in three age groups include artistic, home and garden, clothing/fashion/jewelry, furniture and technology. See details and awards ceremony schedule at www.reuseindustries.org.

- Place recycling and landfill signs on all bins in the building.
