Resident Highlight |
HCHC resident Jose grew up in a cramped studio apartment near De Longpre Park in Hollywood. His father worked at a local car wash and his mother provided childcare in their home. Their neighborhood was safe, but their building was repeatedly cited for code violations, putting the family's stability in constant risk. At the same time, Jose had started junior high school. With the constant noise from the additional children in their apartment, along with the lack of space, Jose would lock himself in the bathroom every day to finish his homework. After hearing from friends about LA Voice, a community based organization that works to improve the quality of life for Los Angeles residents, the family made a commitment to participate in weekly meetings. It was through this experience they were connected to a local church and learned about HCHC's Mariposa Place Apartments in East Hollywood.
In 2009, Jose and his family stood in line with more than 700 people to receive an application for one of the 58 new units. Jose's mom shares, "when I received the phone call that there was a two bedroom apartment available and our son would finally have his own room, it was like a dream come true."
Jose's family has lived in the Mariposa Place Apartments for seven years. They have participated in the variety of services offered in the building, including ESL and GED classes, parenting classes through HCHC's partnership with Visionary Youth Center, and college awareness workshops. It was during one of these workshops Jose met HCHC's ESL Instructor and Community Outreach Coordinator and over a series of financial and college preparation workshops, Jose and his family began to see college as a real possibility.
Last month, Jose left home to begin his junior year at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo where he is studying Computer Engineering. While Jose's parents shared how much they miss him when he leaves, they also said they know what a great life he has ahead of him. We couldn't agree with them more.
